  • Soil-bentonite mixtures are frequently used as impervious for waste disposal sites. In the present work, bentonite composite liner systems(BCL) have been developed by utilizing Korean zeolitic bentonites. The geomechanical properties of the liner systems, such as strength, hydraulic conductivity, etc. have been studied. The laboratory and field test results are also be presented.

  • Purpose: The presence of the matric suction in unsaturated soil increases the stability of the slope, but the reduction of the matric suction due to precipitation can cause sudden slope failure, resulting in a major disaster. In this paper, engineering characteristics in unsaturated state were analyzed for granite weathering soil, which is the representative mountain soil of Korea. Method: Experiments and analysis were conducted on granulated weathering soil as unsaturated shear strength relationships for moisture characteristic curves, unsaturated injection curves, and matric suction under unsaturated conditions. Result: It was analyzed that a rapid change in the matric suction for volumetric water content occurs compared to the case where the particle size distribution is poor and the particle size distribution is good. A good case for the particle size distribution indicates a relatively small permeability coefficient at the same matric suction capacity compared to a poor case. The greater thematric suction, the greater the shear strength. Conclusion: For Korea's representative soil, granulated weathering soil, the functional characteristic curves, unsaturated permeability coefficients, unsaturated shear strength, etc., which are engineering characteristics in unsaturated state, were tested to secure each correlation.

  • A small amount of cement can be added to the soil with high water content to improve its engineering properties. It is difficult to point out the exact time when liquified state of soil is transformed into semi-plastic or plastic states when high water content soil is hydrated by cement. In this study fall cone penetration are used to explain the phase change and compactable status of soil cement. And engineering properties of soil cement compacted in plastic state are investigated. Results reveal that fall cone penetration depth of 1mm or less is judged to a compactable state of soil-cement. Permeability and CBR values of soil cement increased with mixing ratio increased.

  • This study is conducted to investigate the possibility of the utilization of the mixed soil formed by mixing stone sludge, bentonite, and residual soil as a soil sealant sustaining both stability and capacity in the barrier system. A series of tests were performed on the mixed soils to evaluate basic properties such as compaction, compressive strength, permeability and CBR of these materials. The results indicates that as the stone sludge content increases, the optimum moisture content increases a little, but the maximum dry density decreases. The compressive strength and CBR decrease, and the cohesion, internal friction angle and expansion ratio increase. When the bentonite content increases, the maximum dry density decreases, and the optimum moisture content, compressive strength and cohesion, internal friction angle, CBR and expansion ratio increase. Mixing ratio of the mixed soil contained with the stone dust more than 10% and the bentonite less than 10% satisfies the standard of the permeability coefficient as the soil sealant.

  • Most soft ground in the southern and western coasts in Korea consists of very compressible alluvial deposits. Four samples in these alluvial deposite were selected to manifest the constitutive relations of consolidation. A series of tests were performed to investigate void ratio -effective stress relationand void ratio-coefficient of permeability relation on soil samples obtained at Haenam. Jindo Mankyung and Janghung permeabilities by CRS thoery were similar to directly measured data but those of indirectly computed by $C\upsilon$ shows difference. Several models about compressibility and permeability were compared with test data.

  • Self-potential (SP) survey was carried out at Pohang geothermal field. SP measurement showed clear positive anomaly at northern part of the test wells, which can be a up-flow zone of the deep geothermal water due to electrokinetic potential generated by hydrothermal circulation. To give a clearer image of the fluid flow pattern around the test wells, a two-dimensional numerical simulation was applied to construct a numerical block model of the fluid flow system based on SP and magnetotelluric survey results. The result suggests existence of two high permeability zones including the main manifestation area in the northern part of the test wells.

  • Subsurface biobarrier technology has potential applications to contain contaminated groundwater and/or to degrade toxic pollutants in groundwater. Most biobarrier studies were conducted under aerobic condition, however there were several obstacles to make aerobic condition. Thus, In this study, we examined biobarrier formation under denitrifying condition by using nitrate as an electron acceptor. Experiments were performed with a sand column inoculated with activated sludge from the nearby WWTP. The substrate medium was pumped to the sand column in an upflow mode. During the low substrate loading rate period, the extent of reduction rate in hydraulic conductivity was found similar throughout the column, and permeability became relatively stable after couple of days. However, during the high substrate loading rate period, the column demonstrated a gradient of permeability reduction, with the greatest reduction in sections nearest the column inlet. Rapid growth of microorganisms near the column inlet resulted in the unbalanced reduction of hydraulic conductivity throughout the sand column. As a result, at this denitrifying condition the thickness of biobarrier could be controlled by adjusting the medium conditions of microbial growth.

  • This study shows consolidation properties resulted from the experiment made on changes by load increment ratio and consolidation duration of standard consolidation test using deposit soil of Chungju Dam. Though the comparison and analysis of the result turned out that void ratio by load increment ratio was unchanged greatly, the result was inclined as followes : the smaller load increment ratio is, the bigger void ratio is, while the bigger load increment ratio is the bigger settlement is. Also coefficient of consolidation is increased in inverse ratio to load increment ratio. Coefficient of permeability is increased in proportion to load increment ratio, it is not fixed changes by consolidation duration, however. Degree of consolidation is increased to load increment ratio.

  • This study presents a mathematical model for simulating the fate and transport of a reactive organic contaminant degraded through cometabolism in dual-porosity soils during the in situ bioaugmentations. To investigate the effect of dual-porosity on transport and biodegradation of organic hydrocarbons, a bimodal approach was incorporated into the model. Modified Monod kinetics and a microcolony concept [Molz et at., 1986〕 were employed to represent the effects of biodegrading microbes on the transport and biodegradation of an organic contaminant. The effect of permeability reduction due to biomass accumulation on the flow field were examined in the simulation of a hypothetical field-scale in situ bioaugmentation. Simulation results indicate that the presence of the immobile region can decrease the bioavailablity of biodegradable contaminants and that the placement of microbes and nutrients injection wells should be considered for an effective in situ bioaugmentation scheme.

  • The soil tests have been performed on the specimens obtained from about 1,150 sites including landslides and non-landslides areas in natural terrains for last 10 years. Based on the results of those tests, the average soil properties are estimated and the simple equations for estimating permeability are proposed according to geologic conditions. The average permeability in Granite and Mudstone sites is higher than other sites and the content of silt and clay in Mudstone and Gneiss sites is higher than other sites. The correlation analysis and the regression analysis were performed to estimate the coefficient of permeability according to geological conditions. As the result of the correlation analysis, the coefficient of permeability is selected as a dependent variable, and the silt and clay contents, the water contents and the dry unit weights are selected as independent variables. As the result of the regression analysis, the silt and clay contents and the void ratio were involved commonly in the linear regression equations according to geological conditions. To verify the proposed the linear regression equations, the measured result of the coefficient of permeability at other sites was compared with the result predicted with the proposed equations. As the result of comparison, there were a little bit different between them for some data. However the difference was relatively small. Therefore, the linear regression equations for estimating the coefficient of permeability according to geological conditions may be applied to Korean soils. However, these equations should be verified and corrected continuously to improve the accuracy.
