  • A new type of soft ground breakwater was recently developed, which does not need ground improvement because of light weight and structural characteristics. The various studies about consolidation settlements and lateral behavior of proposed soft ground breakwater have been conducted. But, the systematic investigations on the construction performance and long-term settlements of new type breakwater has not been accomplished. In this study, construction simulation of soft ground breakwater with soil box model test and experiments of the long-term wave loaded breakwater were performed. The results of test shows that it is possible to compensate differential settlements by dead loading and/or suction pressure, and to reduce the consolidation settlements by preloading method. It was also found that the vertical and lateral displacements of long-term wave loaded breakwater were negligible.

  • The purpose of the study was to stastically classify individual PM-10 measured by SEM/EDX (scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive x-ray analyzer). The SEM/EDX provided various physical parameters like optical diameter, as well as major 18 chemical information (Mg, Al, Si, P, S, Cl, K, Ca, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, Br, Pb) for a particle-by-particle basis. The total of 1,419 particles were analyzed for the study. Thus density and mass of each particle can be estimated based on its chemical composition. Further the study developed 4 semisource profiles including highway, oil boiler, incinerator, and soil emissions, where each sample was collected near the source in the ambient air The profiles developed were consisted of mass fractions and their uncertainties based on a particle class concept. To obtain mass fraction of each particle class, an agglomerative hierarchical cluster analysis was initially applied to create particle classes for each sample. Then uncertainties were calculated for each class based on the jacknife method. The 1,258 particles out of 1,419 (88.7%) were assorted in newly generated particle classes. The study provides opportunities to identify particle's source quantitatively and to develope various receptor models.

  • A thermophilic bacterium producing D-stereospecific dipeptidase was isolated from Korean soil samples. The enzyme hydrolyzed the peptide bond between D-alanyl-D-alanine (D-Ala-D-Ala). The isolated bacterial strain was rod shaped, gram-positive, motile, and formed an endospore. Morphological and physiological characteristics suggested this microorganism a thermophilic Bacillus species, and was named as Bacillus sp. BCS-l. The production of D-stereospecific dipeptidase was growth-associated and optimal at $55^{\circ}C$. The enzyme was applied for the synthesis of D-amino acid-containing peptide, N-benzyloxycarbonyl-L-aspartyl-D-alanine benzyl ester (Z-L-Asp-D-AlaOBzl), as a model reaction. A thermodynamically controlled synthesis of Z-L-Asp-D-AlaOBzl was achieved in an organic solvent.

  • Synoptic and climatological characteristics of heat waves over Korea and Europe as well as their biometeorological impacts were compared. In July of 1994, excess deaths of about 2,388 in the population of South Korea are estimated by the modified excess death calculation algorithm ofKysely (2004). The excess deaths correspond to the net mortality increase of 12.5% in July of 1994 if we compare the estimated value to the expected number of deaths in this month (i.e., about 19,171). The comparative study of heat waves in Korea and Europe shows that the record-breaking heat waves in both regions are closely associated with prolonged droughts. In particular, reduction of soil moisture, precipitation and cloud cover and enhancement of insolation during the drought periods are very likely to be related to the increase in the intensity and the duration ofheat waves. Climate models predict that the frequency, intensity, and duration of heat waves in the 21 st century will be greatly enhanced in both areas. In order to reduce the biometeorological and socioeconomic impacts due to heat waves, not only the development of heat-related mortality prediction model that can be widely applied to many climate regimes, but also studies on the climatological association between extreme temperatures and abnormal hydrological cycle are needed.

  • A testing system has been developed to evaluate the seasonal variation of the resilient modulus of granular subgrade soils. Two sites were successfully instrumented with soil moisture-temperature cells to monitor over a period of one year, the field temperature and moisture content underneath the pavement. Multiple regression equations were developed to determine the resilient modulus under environmental conditions. It is noted that the use of the effective resilient modulus at the location of the Average Depth of Significant Stress (ADSS) provides a reasonable basis for determining subgrade properties. In addition, a theoretical model has been developed to predict the resilient modulus due to the change of temperature and moisture condition.

  • study was made to investigate the emulsification and rolling-up between liquid oily soils and surfactant and its effect on the detergency. Samples used were triolein as a triglyceride, oleic acid as a free fatty acid and sodium dodecyl sUJfate(SDS) as a surfactant. The results were as follows: 1. The spontaneous emulsification occurred in the system of oleic acid alone and mixture of triolein and oleic acid contacted with 0.5% SDS solution, but it did not occurred in a case of triolein alone. 2. The stability of emulsification increased with the increase of SDS concentration. And the stability of emulsification and (-) t value increased in the order of triolein < mixture of triolein and oleic and< oleic acid. 3. The rolling-up mechanism of model oily soils easily occurred in the order of triolein< mixture of triolein and oleic acid< oleic acid, and facilitated with the increase of SDS concentration. On the other hand, the complex formation was already observed in the system of oleic and 0.5% SDS solution. 4. As compared with the detergency of triolein, the detergency of oleic acid was very high. And the detergency of mixed soil was improved with increasing ratio of oleic acid in the mixture.

  • This research was carried out to evaluate the effect of recycled wastewater and surfactant above CMC(critical micelle concentration) on the removal rate of PAHs in bench-scale slurry bioreactor. Kinetic parameters based on zero order and first order kinetic models were estimated. The first order model was able to describe the removal of phenanthrene and pyrene with high correlation coefficients. Addition of recycled wastewater could enhance the removal rates of phenanthrene and pyrene. Addition of surfactant above CMC could enhance desorption rate and removal rate of phenanthrene and pyrene.

  • Source samples were collected to construct source profiles for 9 different source types, including soil, road dust, gasoline/diesel-powered vehicles, a municipal incinerator, industrial sources, agricultural/biomass burning, marine aerosol, and a coal-fired power plant. Seasonal profiles for 'Chinese aerosol', aerosols derived from the urban area of China, were reconstructed from seasonal $PM_{2.5}$ compositions reported in Beijing, China. Ambient $PM_{2.5}$ at a receptor site was also measured during each of the four seasons, from April 2001 to February 2002, in Seoul. The Chemical Mass Balance receptor model was applied to quantify source contributions during the study period using the estimated source profiles. Consequently, motor vehicle exhaust (33.0%), in particular 23.9% for diesel-powered vehicles, was the largest contributor affecting the $PM_{2.5}$ levels in Seoul, followed by agricultural/biomass burning (21.5%) and 'Chinese aerosol' (13.1%), indicating contributions from long-range transport. The largest contributors by season were: for spring, 'Chinese aerosol' (31.7%); for summer, motor vehicle exhaust (66.9%); and for fall and winter, agricultural/biomass burning (31.1% and 40.1%, respectively). These results show different seasonal patterns and sources affecting the $PM_{2.5}$ level in Seoul, than those previously reported for other cities in the world.
