Studies on the Detergency of Oily Soils (Part 1) - Detergency of Soild Oily Soils - (유성오염의 세척성에 관한 연구(제1보) -개체유성오염의 세척성-)

  • The interaction and detergency between oily soil and surfactant solution were studied Samples used were tristearin, tripalmitin and their mixture as a triglyceride, myristic acid as a fatty acid and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) as surfactant. The results were as follows: 1. The mixtures of model oily soils were formed of eutectic point and their melting point were lower than them of individual oily soils. 2. The formation of liquid crystalline (LC) phase was recognized in the triangle phase diagram for SDS~ water~model oily soil system. The areas of LC phase region were in the order of SHS~ water~myristir acid> SDS~ water~mixture of tristearin, tripalmitin and myristic acid (TS/TP/M)>SDS~water~mixture of tristearin and tripalmitin (TS/TP) 3. The LC phase region expanded to wide concentration range of SDS solution and high concentration range of model oily soil with increasing temperature. Particularity, the LC phase region expanded highly at $30~40^{\circ}C$ but when the temperature was elevated above $40^{\circ}C$, expanding tendency decreased. 4. In the system of myristic acid and TS/TP/M contacted with SDS solution, the LC phase was already formed at $28^{\circ}C$ and the region of the LC phase were expanded with increasing temperature. But in the system of TS/TP contacted with SDS solution, the LC phase was not formed in whole experiment temperature. 5. The detergency of myristic acid was very high ann it was recognized that the formation of the LC phase played an important role in the detergency. The detergency of TS/TP was very for low, but when TS/TF was mixed with myristic acid, the detergency of TS/TP increased. It is supposed that the LC phase was formed butween SDS solution and myristic acid promoted to penetration of SDS solution into the inner parts of TS/TP.

Effects of Rootball Media and Covering Materials for Air-layering on Rooting and Growth of Miniature Tree Material of Carpinus coreana (공중취목 피복재료가 소사나무 분재소재의 발근 및 생장에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effects of rootball media and covering materials for air-layering on the rooting and growth responses of miniature tree material. The experiment was performed with Carpinus coreana Nakai in the vinyl-house condition. The covering material, jute tape increased the diameter growth at 1cm above the girdling part of the tree material. The combined use of the soil mixture of peatmoss and perlite(2:1, by volume) as rootball medium and jute tape increased the dry weight of current year leaves and shoots. The number of shoot shorter than 10cm and that of leaves from the shoot were produced more by using a sphagnum moss for rootball medium than the soil mixture. The use of jute tape shortened the period required for rooting and increased the number of fine roots and the total root dry weight at girdling part of the tree material. On the other hand, the number of long roots was produced more by using the sphagnum moss than the soil mixture.

Water-induced changes in mechanical parameters of soil-rock mixture and their effect on talus slope stability

  • Soil-rock mixture (S-RM) is an inhomogeneous geomaterial that is widely encountered in nature. The mechanical and physical properties of S-RM are important factors contributing towards different deformation characteristics and unstable modes of the talus slope. In this paper, the equivalent substitution method was employed for the preparation of S-RM test samples, and large-scale triaxial laboratory tests were conducted to investigate their mechanical parameters by varying the water content and confining pressure. Additionally, a simplified geological model based on the finite element method was established to compare the stability of talus slopes with different strength parameters and in different excavation and support processes. The results showed that the S-RM samples exhibit slight strain softening and strain hardening under low and high water content, respectively. The water content of S-RM also had an effect on decreasing strength parameters, with the decrease in magnitude of the cohesive force and internal friction angle being mainly influenced by the low and high water content, respectively. The stability of talus slope decreased with a decrease in the cohesion force and internal friction angle, thereby creating a new shallow slip surface. Since the excavation of toe of the slope for road construction can easily cause a landslide, anti-slide piles can be used to effectively improve the slope stability, especially for shallow excavations. But the efficacy of anti-slide piles gradually decreases with increasing water content. This paper can act as a reference for the selection of strength parameters of S-RM and provide an analysis of the instability of the talus slope.

  • This study was intended to identify the effect of the wetting on a long-term compression settlement of the rock/soil mixture used as fill material, depending on compaction and grading conditions. The relatively large settlement happened under the fully-submerged condition, and a repeated settlement was monitored when moisture content increased over and over again like the rainfall infiltration. In case of the materials without fine fractions or compacted in wet condition, the settlement caused by wetting was relatively low. In conclusion, the long-term compression settlement of granular (rock/soil mixture) fill material is more affected by the increase of water content and temperature change (freezing and thawing) than creep.

  • In order to investigate the applicability and suitability of the coal ash (bottom ash) to landfill final cover, field pilot-scale lysimeter experiments were carried out. The mixture of loamy soil, bottom ash, and construction waste was placed as a cover material in lysimeter ($2m{\times}6m{\times}1.2m$) which were constructed with cement brick, and then volumetric water contents, pF value, and the quantity of runoff and seepage of treatment boxes filled with the mixture of loamy soil and the industrial by-products were monitored from July, 2007 to february, 2008. Among the cases tested, consequently, the case containing the mixture of bottom ash and loamy soil was most effective in plant growth and water retention ability.

  • Organobentonite modified with hexadecyltrimethylammonium (HDTMA) was used to quantify an adsorption of heavy metals. Based on preliminary experiments, optimal soil/solution ratio, a range of pH, and electrolyte were selected. Adsorption experiments of cadmium and lead were conducted to quantify an adsorption selectivity to bentonite and organobentonite. Adsorption of cadmium and lead to bentonite was increased with increasing a soil/solution ratio. Adsorption of cadmium and lead to bentonite was increased with increasing a soil/solution ratio. Adsorptions of heavy metal to organobentonite were slightly reduced relative to bentonite. This study used the principle of hard-soft-acid-base (HBAB) to interpretate an adsorption mechanism. Because of competition between cadmium and lead. adsorption of cadmium and lead was reduced in mixture of heavy metals. Adsorption selectivity.

Physical Properties of Soil Concrete Using Volcaniclastic and the Application to Roadway (화산쇄설물을 사용한 소일콘크리트의 물리적 특성과 도로포장의 적용)

  • The development of a new type of soil-cement concrete pavement using volcaniclastic is the main purpose of this study. Various mixture ratios, specimens' penetration resistance, time of setting, slump flow of fleshly mixed concrete, compressive strength and color characteristics of hardened concrete were studied. It was concluded that the optimum weight ratio of cement:volcaniclastic to produce good properties of soil-cement concrete is 1:3 and the use of volcaniclastic as main aggregate can improve the concrete surface color that is warm earth-tone road color. Therefore, commercial development for soil-cement concrete pavement using volcaniclastic is highly promising.

The effect of root zone environment on the growth of shoot and root of tobacco plant (연초의 근권환경이 뿌리와 지상부의 생육에 미치는 영향)

  • This experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of growth medium in pots composed of upland soil(S), rice straw manure(M), carbonated rice hull(CRH), and their mixture on growth of tobacco cv. NC 82. The growth of shoot and root was vigorous in order of medium S+M+CRH>M>CRH>S. In M+S medium, root growth in the part of manure was superior to upland soil. But root growth of upland soil part in M+S plot was more vigorous than that in upland soil only. It is possibly due to be influenced by manure in M+S plot. Total length and weight of root, number of roots, and especially for development of adventitious root were closely related to shoot growth. Roots grown in upland soil part was brownish gray in color, while the roots in manure part was milky white. The milky white colored roots had longer life than others. It was concluded that root zone environments derived from several media in pots closely related to shoot growth and disease tolerance of tobacco plant.

  • The effect of free fatty acid in fatty soil on the detergency of particulate soil was investigated. Cotton lawn fabric was soiled with the mixture of polmitic acid, hydrogenated fat, paraffin oil and iron oxide black altering the contents of palmitic acid and was laundered with different sur-fastants under various temperature and alkalinity. The rate of soil removal was estimated by means of the spectoometic analysis of iron on the fabric before and after washing. The results of dergency were compared those obtained by reflactance and K/S value from Kubelka-Munk equation which were derived from reflactance measurements.

  • Stability analysis based on the limit equilibrium method combined with the result of infiltration analysis is commonly used to evaluate the effect of rainfall infiltration on the slope stability. Soil is a three-phase mixture composed of solid particle, water and air. Therefore, a fully coupled mixture theories of stress-deformation behavior and the flow of water and air should be used to accurately analyze the process of rainfall infiltration through soil slope. The purpose of this study is to study the effect of interaction of air and water flow on the mechanical stability of slope. In this study, stability analyses based on the coupled hydro-mechanical model of three-phases were conducted for slope of weathered granite soil widespread in Korea. During the process of hydro-mechanical analysis strength reduction technique was applied to evaluate the effect of rainfall infiltration on the slope stability. The results showed an increase of air pressure during infiltration because rain water continuously displaced the air in the unsaturated zone. Such water-air interaction in the pore space of soil affects the stress-deformation behavior of slope. Therefore, the results from the three-phase model showed different behavior from the solid-water model that ignores the transport effect of air in the pores.
