  • Cocoa is a popular drink for children and contains healthy polyphenols however; a deep brown stain is left when cocoa is spilled over clothes. The main pigments in cocoa are anthocyanins that change in washing solutions with different alkalinity and metals. The removal and color changes in a cocoa stain after washing with various pH solutions and water hardness were studied. Alkalinity and the water hardness of washing solutions were important factors for the removal of cocoa stains. The removal of cocoa things in washing solutions without detergent was low (and even became negative after removal and darker) in solutions with a pH 9 and above. The cocoa stain was not removed and only the fabric color faded, although the cocoa stained cloth was washed with Korea tap water that has a pH of 7. The cocoa stain removal in detergent solutions was conspicuously higher than for only water. Even in detergent solutions, the cocoa stain removal decreased as water hardness increased. Cocoa stain removal was more effective and the color dimmest when the stained cloth was washed in a solution without the metal cations, and the bleach added with the detergent at a temperature of $40^{\circ}C$ and for longer than 20 minutes. Effective and economical equipment for tap water softening for a washing machine should be developed and used to improve cocoa stain removal.

  • Zeolite A helps an increase of detergency performance according to showing the ion exchange effect for polyvalant ions and it's detergency performance could be calculated quantitatively by using the disperse stabilization theory because it is water-insoluble material and is as colloid particles in aqueous solution. In this study, zeta potential of carbon black, cellulose, and Zeolite A were measured in each inorganic salt solutions and applied to the theory of Heterocoagulation in order to evaluate the detergency performance of Zeolite A about the particulate soil at the view point of interaction potential energy. Zeolite A was shown help an increase of detergency performance according to the increasing of the steric repulsion between Zeolite A and cellulose in $Na2CO_3$ solution and the decrease of re-deposition of carbon black on the fabric by rapid coagulation with carbon black in $Na_2SO_4$ solution.

  • To investigate detergency of various woven fabrics in relation to the detergents and washing temperature. cotton, polyester/cotton (p/c), nylon, acetate, and polyester were soiled in aqueous artificial ($carbon-CCl_4$) soil. Each fabric was washed with soap, alkaline and neutral synthetic detergents at $30^{\circ}C$, $40^{\circ}C$ and $60^{\circ}C$ respectively. The results obtained may be summerized as follows; 1. In soap, ascension of temperature had the most important effect upon washing efficiency and the higher the temperature was, the higher the washing efficiency was showed in all fabrics. And in case of alkaline synthetic detergent, nylon and p/c fabrics were much more difficult to clean at higher temperature and also acetate and polyester had the best efficiency at $40^{\circ}C$. Detergency of neutral detergent was good but the effect of temperature in neutral detergent was less than in soap. 2. Washing efficiency of cotton was less than that of others. 3. The higher the temperature was, the higher the washing efficiency of cotton in all detergents, and the best was in soap. In p/c, detergency of neutral detergent was good but effect of ascension of temperature was lower than in soap. In nylon, washing efficiencies of alkaline synthetic detergent and neutral detergent were excellent at 30°C but detergency of soap at $60^{\circ}C$ was best. In case of acetate, detergency of all detergents was about the same at $30^{\circ}C$ but that of soap at $60^{\circ}C$ was best. In polyester at $30^{\circ}C$, efficiency of neutral detergent was excellent but that of soap was more excellent at higher temperature and the best detergency of alkaline synthetic detergent showed at $40^{\circ}C$. In general. the higher the temperature is, the higher the washing efficiency of soap is. But when synthetic fibers of nylon and polyester are washed with synthetic detergents, washing at lower temperature is advisable.

  • This research was initiated to investigate the revegetation characteristics under seedling types of native woody plants on a disturbed slope. 4 different seedling types of woody plants (control, unit seedling plot, nature seedling plot, pot seedling plot) with the same woody plants (Rhus chinensis Mill, Albizzia julibrissin Duraz., Quercus acutissima Carr., Pinus densiflora S. et Z.) were treated with 3 replications on the experimental disturbed slope. Data such as the died number of native woody plants, growth height and visual quality were analyzed. The died number of plants were high in unit seedling plot when compared to the rest plots of seedling types. From the standpoint of died plant species, the died number were high in Rhus chinensis and Albizzia julibrissin whereas the died number were low in Quercus acutissima and Pinus densiflora. That's because we used 1-year old seedlings of Rhus chinensis and Albizzia julibrissin and 3-year old seedling Quercus acutissima and Pinus densiflora. This result indicated that the died reason of native woody seedling was not species but seedling age. Both growth height and visual quality were ranked first in the pot seedling plot, second in the nature seedling plot, third in the unit seedling plot, and last in the control plot, respectively. However, the difference of both growth height and visual quality in each seedling plot was not observed on the 11 months after planting. Especially, the main reason of low rooting and growth value in the unit seedling plot was due to wooven fabric outer crust of pot that obstruct seedling rooting into the soil. We concluded that pot seedling of native woody plants was effective in the viewpoint of the ecological disturbed slope revegetation.

  • In order to investigate the strength and deformation anisotropy of compacted decomposed granite soils, a series of unsaturated-drained triaxial compression tests were performed. The sample used in the study was decomposed granite soil from Shimonoseki in Yamaguchi prefecture. The sample had three different angles of the axial (major principal) direction to the sedimentation plane (compaction plane), 0, 45 and 90 degrees. The compression strain of specimens subjected to isotropic compression was strongly influenced by the sedimentation angle. In addition, the time dependence was independent of the sedimentation angle in relation to the deformation behavior during the secondary compression process. The effect of the sedimentation angle on the triaxial compression strength and deformation was clear with low confining stress. Moreover, it was recognized that although the sedimentation angle and preparation methods were different, the dilatancy rate was relative to the increment of strength due to dilatancy. Therefore, it may be concluded that the compacted specimen has anisotropic mechanical properties similar to those of sand with initial fabric anisotropy.

  • In the companion paper, we provided the novel elastic-plastic constitutive model based on the micromechanics theory. Herein, the elastic and elastic-plastic deformation of granular soils is meticulously analyzed. To guarantee high accuracy of the microscopic parameter, the systematic procedure to evaluate the parameters is provided. The analysis of the elastic response during the isotropic and triaxial compression shows that the stress-level dependency of cross-anisotropic elastic moduli is induced by the power relationship of the contact force in the normal contact stiffness, while the evolution of fabric anisotropy is more pronounced during triaxial compression. The micromechanical analysis indicates that the plastic strains are likely to occur at very small strains. The plastic deformation of tangential contacts has an important role in the reduction of soil stiffness during axial loading.

  • This study focused on nonlinear effective stress site response analysis using two coupled constitutive models, that is, the DM model (Dafalias and Manzari 2004), which incorporated a simple plasticity sand model accounting for fabric change effects, and the PMDY03 model (Khosravifar et al. 2018), that is, a 3D model for earthquake-induced liquefaction triggering and postliquefaction response. A detailed parametric study was conducted to validate the effectiveness of nonlinear site response analysis and porewater pressure (PWP) generation through a true coupled formulation for assessing the initiation of liquefaction at ground level. The coupled models demonstrated accurate prediction of liquefaction triggering, which was in line with established empirical liquefaction triggering relations in published databases. Several limitations were identified in the evaluation of liquefaction using the cyclic stress method, despite its widespread implementation for calculating liquefaction triggering. Variations in shear stiffness, represented by changes in shear wave velocity (Vs1), exerted the most significant influence on site response. The study further indicated that substantial differences in response spectra between nonlinear total stress and nonlinear effective stress analyses primarily occurred when liquefaction was triggered or on the verge of being triggered, as shown by excess PWP ratios approaching unity. These differences diminished when liquefaction occurred towards the later stages of intense shaking. The soil response was predominantly influenced by the higher stiffness values present prior to liquefaction. A key contribution of this study was to validate the criteria used to assess the triggering of level-ground liquefaction using true coupled effective-stress constitutive models, while also confirming the reliability of numerical approximations including the PDMY03 and DM models. These models effectively captured the principal characteristics of liquefaction observed in field tests and laboratory experiments.

  • The discharge of oily wastewater into water bodies and soil poses a serious hazard to the environment and public health. Various conventional techniques have been employed to treat oil-water mixtures and emulsions; Unfortunately, these approaches are frequently expensive, time-consuming, and unsatisfactory outcomes. Porous materials and adsorbents are commonly used for purification, but their use is limited by low separation efficiencies and the risk of secondary contamination. Recent advancements in nanotechnology have driven the development of innovative materials and technologies for oil-contaminated wastewater treatment. Nanomaterials can offer enhanced oil-water separation properties due to their high surface area and tunable surface chemistry. The fabrication of nanofiber membranes with precise pore sizes and surface properties can further improve separation efficiency. Notably, novel technologies have emerged utilizing nanomaterials with special surface wetting properties, such as superhydrophobicity, to selectively separate oil from oil-water mixtures or emulsions. These special wetting surfaces are promising for high-efficiency oil separation in emulsions and allow the use of materials with relatively large pores, enhancing throughput and separation efficiency. In this study, we introduce a facile and scalable method for fabrication of superhydrophobic-superoleophilic felt fabrics for oil/water mixture and emulsion separation. AlN nanopowders are hydrolyzed to create the desired microstructures, which firmly adhere to the fabric surface without the need for a binder resin, enabling specialized wetting properties. This approach is applicable regardless of the material's size and shape, enabling efficient separation of oil and water from oil-water mixtures and emulsions. The oil-water separation materials proposed in this study exhibit low cost, high scalability, and efficiency, demonstrating their potential for broad industrial applications.

  • This study was performed to evaluate influences of tunnel covering materials and seeding dates on the growth and productivity of water spinach (Ipomoea aquatic F.) cultured early in unheated greenhouse. During tunnel installation period, from March 5 to April 30 and from October 11 to November 10, air and soil temperature in tunnel covered with polyethylene film (PEF) had risen $2.0-2.4^{\circ}C$ and $0.9-1.0^{\circ}C$, respectively, compared to those in non-tunnel (NT). Air and soil temperature in tunnel with illite non-fabric (INF) also had risen $1.6-1.8^{\circ}C$ and $0.6-0.8^{\circ}C$, respectively. Especially, it showed greater effects of the rise at low temperature time zones of the day. In plots of seeding on March 15 in tunnel covered with PEF or INF, temperature during emergence period, emergence days and rate were similar to plot seeding on April 5 in NT. There were two more harvesting in plots of seeding on March 5 or March 15 in tunnel, and increasing of total yield by 22.5-25.7% compared to plot of seeding on April 5 in NT. But there was observed no significant differences between PEF and INF. Whereas PEF was necessary to be removed at midday sometimes because it had risk of high temperature injury, INF was not necessary. All above suggest that it was suitable to sow seed on the middle of March in tunnel covered with INF, for early culture of water spinach in unheated greenhouse.

  • This study is to see the recovery effect of the Deltacon method by investigating the amount of sand deposition, the topographical cross section and the vegetation structure; and to derive the effective recovery method of coastal erosion area. The target areas of this study include Jinri coastal dune, Bajireum coastal dune and Seopori coastal dune in Deokjeok-do Island, Ongjin-gun, Incheon. In order to assess the current status of the coastal erosion area recovery, the soil profile structure map was prepared on the site and then the amount of sand deposition within 1m was calculated indoors. The vegetation recovery status of the costal erosion area was assessed via the analyses of the topographical profile structure and the plant community structure, and we aim to derive the effective recovery plan of the Deltacon method with the results. With the Deltacon method, structures with ductile material, special non-woven fabric bags filled with soil and vegetation can be performed therefore the structuralstability and prevention of sand erosion can be achieved. The amounts of sand deposition of Bajireum coastal dune, Seopori costal dune and Jinri costal dune were calculated $0.98{\sim}2.54m^3$, $1.02{\sim}2.96m^3$, and $0.27{\sim}0.75m^3$, respectively, and it is considered that the costal erosion recovery is actively performed for Bajireum costal dune and Seopori costal dune. The analysis results of vegetation structures by topography show that the installation of the send collecting net in steep areas has been highly effective and the Deltacon-constructed target areas have been restored to vegetation and the costal dune, which is similar to the natural dune. The investigation of the plant community structure in Deokjeok-do Island costal dune, Incheon displayed similar research results of the existing costal dune flora and confirmed the emergence of Lathyrus japonicus, Carex kobomugi, Elymus mollis, Vitex rotundifolia, and Calystegia soldanella and others. In order to carry out further effective recovery with the Deltacon method, improvements to rootage of herbaceous vegetation are needed in areas without foredune herbaceous vegetation, and continuos maintenance & management monitoring of connected windbreak forest to costal dunes are also necessary.
