The aim of this study is to suggest a semi-empirical equation for estimating the hydraulic conductivity of sands using geoelectrical measurements technique. The suggested formula is based on the original Kozeny-Carman equation; therefore varying factors affecting the Kozeny-Carman equation were selected as the testing variables, and six different sands with varying particle sizes and particle shapes were used as the testing materials in this study. To measure both hydraulic and electrical conductivities, a series of constant head permeameter tests equipped with the four electrodes conductivity probe was conducted. Test results reveal that the effects of both pore water conductivity and flow rate in relation between hydraulic conductivity and formation factor (=pore water conductivity / measused conductivity of soil) of tested materials are negligible. However, because the variations of hydraulic conductivity of the tested sands according to particle sizes are significant, the estimated hydraulic conductivity using the formation factor varies with particle sizes. The overall comparison between the measured hydraulic conductivity and the estimated hydraulic conductivity using the suggested formula shows a good agreement, and the variation of hydraulic conductivity with varying Archie's m exponents is smaller compared with varying porosities.
A review was made on the effect of organic matter application on the chemical characteristics of soils such as pH, solubilities of minerals, and cation exchange capacity mainly at flooded rice soils. The review can be summarized as follows: 1. Application of organic material such as rice straw and compost in flooded rice soil leads to a temporary lowering of soil pH at the earlier stage of soil reduction, due to the production of various organic acids and carbonic acid. This temporary lowered pH is replaced with the production of alkaline substances such as ammonia as the reduction of soil proceeds. 2. Incorporation of organic materials intensifies the ferrous iron, dissolving various minerals, virtually to the increase in electrical conductivity of soils. 3. Organic materials also play an important role in dissolving soil minerals through the production of various chelating agents. 4. Application of soil organic matter significantly increases cation exchange capacity of soils. 5. Continuous application of rice straw or compost leads to the increase in soil organic matter content to some extent, up to the level of equilibrium. In soils low in organic matter the equilibrium level is attained with five years continuous application of compost. 6. The manner of chemical fertilizer application influences the accumulation of organic matter applied in soils. Low levels of fertilization lowers the accumulation while high levels of fertilization accerelates the accumulation.
This study was conducted in Jeju Island to find the effects of livestock manure application on the changes in soil salt concentration and $NO_3-N$ contents. Soil samples were collected from Goojua-Tong (volcanic ash soil) and Aewol-Tong(non-volcanic ash soil) to 50 cm depth and were mixed with livestock manure to 20 cm depth in PVC container(30 cm diameter, 1 m height). Animal manures of cattle, pig, and fowl were adjusted to 0, 50, 100,150 ton/ha. Animal manure applications increased the salt concentrations in soil. The salt concentration was increased as the fowl manure amount was increased The effects were larger in order of fowl manure > cattle manure $\fallingdotseq$ pig manure. $NO_3-N$ contents in soil showed a sharp increase by applications of fowl manure, but the increase was slow when the cattle and pig manures were applied. In volcanic ash soil, there was no change in phosphate contents by application of animal manures, but the phosphate contents increased in non-volcanic ash soil with the application of animal manure, especially by fowl manure.
To investigate the salt accumulation in the plastic film house soils, bulk density, electrical conductivity(EC), exchangeable canons and water soluble anions were determined at different depths(0~60cm) in the salt-accumulated plastic film house soils in Yesan, Chungnam, Korea. Bulk density were increased from $1.2Mg/m^3$ to $1.5Mg/m^3$ as the depth changed from 0cm(top soil) to 30cm(subsoil) below the soil surface, whereas the bulk densities between 30cm to 60cm slightly decreased to $1.42Mg/m^3$. These changes of soil bulk densities might influence the porosity and pore size distribution, resulting in affecting the water flow throughout, soil layers. Electrical conductivity and Exchangeable sodium percentage(ESP) for 0 to 10cm soil layer were 5.08 dS/m and 6.4, respectively, while the EC was decreased to less than 1.63 dS/m in 20~30cm depth and about 0.7 dS/m. Salt accumulation patterns in the plastic film house soils might be influenced by the changes of the bulk densities in soil.

The electrical conductivity, EC is a major indicator of soil salinity. Measuring EC of saturation-paste extract of soil, ECe, is the standard way to evaluate soil salinity. However much of the data on soil salinity have been obtained by measuring the EC of the 1:5 soil-to-water extract, EC(1:5) or salts contents(%) which multiplied by conversion factor. And, thus we attempted to collect and analysis 90 soil samples at 9 reclaimed tidelands in Korea and to derive a relationship between ECe and dilution factor at ECe and EC(1:5), $DF_{1:5}$ of 3 soil textural conditions and 6 salinity conditions. Regression equations between ECe and $DF_{1:5}$ were obtained $ECe=1.4701ln(DF_{1:5})+5.0974(r^2=0.97^{**})$ in case of more than 50% silt contents, $ECe=2.1399ln(DF_{1:5})+5.3462 (r^2=0.99^{***})$ in case of below 50% silt contents, and $ECe=1.5927ln(DF_{1:5})+5.2486 (r^2=0.98^{***})$ in all cases, and then we suggested the $DF_{1:5}\;and\;DF_%$ of 3 soil textural conditions and 6 salinity conditions.
Natural gypsum has been used as a soil amendment in the United States. However, flue gas desulfurization (FGD)-gypsum has not traditionally been used for agricultural purpose although it has potential benefit as a soil amendment. To expand use of FGD-gypsum for agricultural purpose, the effect of FGD-gypsum on soil chemical properties was investigated in the field scales. Application rates for this study were 0 (control), 1.1, and 2.2 Mg ha-1 of FGD-gypsum. After two year application, the soil samples were taken to 110 cm depth and sub-sampled at 10 cm intervals. The heavy metal contents in FGD-gypsum were lower than ceiling levels allowed by regulations for land-applied biosolids. Soil pH was not largely affected by FGD-gypsum application. Although degree of calcium (Ca) saturation in surface horizons increases only slightly with respect to the control, there is a clear decrease in exchangeable aluminum (Al). FGD-gypsum clearly increases the soil electrical conductivity (EC) with increasing application rate. Water-soluble Ca and sulfate is increased with FGD-gypsum application and these ions moved to a depth of at least 80 cm after only 2 years. We conclude that surface application of FGD-gypsum can mitigate toxicity of Al and deficiency of Ca in subsoil of acid soil.

Characteristics of electrical conductivity(EC) of seventy one-greenhouse soil located in southern part of Korea were surveyed to obtain the basic information for sustainable management of plastic film house soils. The averaged soil EC were 5.84 and 2.49dS/m for top-and sub-soil, respectively, showing distribution of 11.3% for top-soils and 50.7% for sub-soils within the optimum level of 2.0 dS/m. On the whole, the soils with flowering plants revealed higher EC than those with fruiting vegetables showing 2.75~6.34dS/m for the former and 2.29(sub-soils)~5.13dS/m(top-soils) for the latter. In a view of soil sampling time, the soils at Feb., 1996 marked 4.3~37.7% and 10.3(top-soils)~11.3%(sub-soils) higher EC compared with the soils at Sept. and Dec., 1995, respectively. The linear regression correlation coefficients of soil minerals to EC were in oder of $Mg^{2+}$ > $NO_3{^-}$ > $Cl^-$ > $Ca^{2+}$ > $SO_4{^{2-}}$ > $K^+$ for top-soils and were $Cl^-$ > $SO_4{^{2-}}$ > $NO_3{^-}$ > $Ca^{2+}$ > $Mg^{2+}$ > $K^+$ for sub-soils. In especial, the concentration of soil EC accompanied the increasing population ratio of soil fungi to bacteria and/or actinomycetes.
This study was conducted to analyze seasonal variations of de-icing salt ions harvested from soils and plants according to salt damage of Pinus densiflora f. multicaulis, a evergreen conifer, on roadsides. Pinus densiflora f. multicaulis was divided into three groups referred to SD, ND, and WD (serious salt damage (SD) = 71-100%, normal salt damage (ND) = 31-70%, and weak salt damage (WD) = 0-30%) based on the degree of visible foliage damage, and measured acidity (pH), electrical conductivity(EC), and de-icing salt ions (K+, Ca2+, Na+, and Mg2+) harvested from soils and plants. The results indicated that acidity, electrical conductivity, and de-icing salt ions of soils and plants were significantly affected by seasonal variation and salt damage. In addition, a strong positive liner relationship was observed in plants between the concentration of de-icing salts and salt damage in spring, while the relationship among seasonal variation and salt damage in soil were not significant. The results from this study has important implications for the management of conifer species in relation to salinity and roadsides maintenance.
Shihwa tidal freshwater marsh was constructed recently to treat pollutants entering Shihwa lake. In this study, we examined the spatial and temporal patterns of heavy metal accumulation in soils of Shihwa marsh and sought correlations between several soil variables (pH, electrical conductivity, organic matter, and acid ammonium oxalate-extractable Fe and Al contents) and the heavy metal concentration of soils. Surface soil samples (0∼20 cm) were collected in June 2000, November 2000, and July 2001, and were analyzed for heavy metals (Zn, Cd, Pb, Cu, Cr, As, and Hg) and soil chemical properties. The neutral pH and water-saturated conditions of Shihwa marsh appeared to favor immobilization of heavy metal through adsorption onto soils. The concentrations of heavy metal (especially Zn, Cu, and Cr) in soils of Shihwa marsh increased along the sampling occasions, suggesting that soils of Shihwa marsh serve as a sink of heavy metal. Among the sub-marshes, metal concentrations were highest in Banweol high marshes and lowest in Samhwa marshes. The temporal and spatial variations in the heavy metal concentrations of soils were correlated positively with organic matter and oxalate extractable Fe and Al contents, but negatively with electrical conductivity. These results suggest that organic matter and hydrous oxide of Fe/Al may playa key role in removing heavy metals in soils of Shihwa marsh, and that heavy metal removing capacity would increase with desalinization. However, the removal patterns of heavy metal by reeds warrant further studies to evaluate the total removal capacity of heavy metals by Shihwa marsh.
This study was carried out to determine the possible use of volcano eruption sand at Merapi mountain area compared with clayey soil, alfisol as turfgrass growing media. Indonesia has abundant source of eruption sand and clayey soil. Native zoysiagrass (Z. matrella) was collected from Sleman district and seashore paspalum (P. vaginatum) from Solo region. The experimental plots were treated with both organic and inorganic fertilizers. Zoysiagrass and seashore paspalum can grow on the mixture of eruption volcano sand and alfisol soil. Fertilizers application increased turf color, surface coverage rate and recovery rate of turfgrass. While fertilizer treated alfisol have no effect on the length and dry weight of zoysiagrass root. Mixing of volcano eruption sand on growing media resulted in longer root length, higher shoot dry weight of zoysiagrass than in alfisol soil. Type of fertilizer affected the pH, soil organic matter, total N, available P, available K and electrical conductivity of sand and alfisol after cultivation. Similarly to zoysiagrass, the recovery of seashore paspalum was increased by application of fertilizer, even the inorganic fertilizer showed faster recovery than organic fertilizer. Surface coverage of seashore paspalum was faster than that of zoysiagrass with or without fertilizer.
