Recently, ground pits that have been occurring frequently in urban areas are hindering traffic flow and causing property damages and loss of human life, acting as factors that are threatening the safety of citizens. Therefore, sunken ground must be quickly restored and provisions must be made for additional damage but current domestic detailed standards regarding ground pits and accurate definitions regarding causes and measures to be taken for reoccurrences are lacking. Restoration methods of sunken ground include backfilling by reusing sunken soil or other fill material and paving the road and while this is the most often used method, this only prevents ground from sinking temporarily and can not serve as a fundamental solution. Also, additional ground pits can occur on ground that is reinforced using this method due to faulty backfill material or faulty hardening. This study used Eco-friendly High-Strength Material (EHSM) as restoration material that can be used in the restoration of underground cavities that have occurred due to ground subsidence to analyze the engineered characteristics of modified dredging clay and test pieces made from changed ratios of EHSM and weathered granite soil were uniaxial compression tests were conducted and freezing-thawing tests were conducted to study strength properties according to environmental changes of restoration material, and after tests were concluded by each level, uniaxial compression tests and dynamic elasticity tests were conducted for intensity analysis. Also, to evaluate strength characteristics of the restored ground, dynamic plate load tests were conducted to verify the improvement effectiveness of the restored ground.
Application of rhizospheric fungi is an effective and environmentally friendly method of improving plant growth and controlling many plant diseases. The current study was aimed to identify phytohormone-producing fungi from soil, to understand their roles in sesame plant growth, and to control Fusarium disease. Three predominant fungi (PNF1, PNF2, and PNF3) isolated from the rhizospheric soil of peanut plants were screened for their growth-promoting efficiency on sesame seedlings. Among these isolates, PNF2 significantly increased the shoot length and fresh weight of seedlings compared with controls. Analysis of the fungal culture filtrate showed a higher concentration of indole acetic acid in PNF2 than in the other isolates. PNF2 was identified as Penicillium sp. on the basis of phylogenetic analysis of ITS sequence similarity. The in vitro biocontrol activity of Penicillium sp. against Fusarium sp. was exhibited by a 49% inhibition of mycelial growth in a dual culture bioassay and by hyphal injuries as observed by scanning electron microscopy. In addition, greenhouse experiments revealed that Fusarium inhibited growth in sesame plants by damaging lipid membranes and reducing protein content. Co-cultivation with Penicillium sp. mitigated Fusarium-induced oxidative stress in sesame plants by limiting membrane lipid peroxidation, and by increasing the protein concentration, levels of antioxidants such as total polyphenols, and peroxidase and polyphenoloxidase activities. Thus, our findings suggest that Penicillium sp. is a potent plant growth-promoting fungus that has the ability to ameliorate damage caused by Fusarium infection in sesame cultivation.

This study examined the improved effect of wear tolerance of warm-season turfgrass overseeded with cool-season turfgrasses. Also, it investigated the improved effect of crumb rubber on wear tolerance and the difference anmong cultivars regarding the wear of Zoysia spp. In wear experiment during summer, the warm-season turfgrass overseed with cool-season turfgrasses had a higher visual rating on the ground than the monostand of Cynodon dactylon. Moreover, in wear experiment in winter, barrenness showed significant progress in the monostand of C. dactylon, while the barrenness did not appear at all in overseeded turf with cool-season turfgrasses. As a result of investigating the bulk density was increased in the monostand of C. dactylon, but not in the overseed turf with cool-season turfgrasses. From the above result, the wear tolerance effcect of turfgrasses appeared year round through warm-season and cool-season turfgrass mixtures. Also, it was found that the method of topdressing crumb rubber on the ground was effective as a physical assistant device alleviating damage of turfgrasses. The possibility of improving wear tolerance was accepted by adding soil amendments such as perlite, pamis, etc., in order to promote the growth of turfgrass.

The experiments were carried out to develop ecological weed control system in wheat field of rice-wheat cropping system. The results were, depression effect on water foxtail by wheat seeding method decreased the seeding after doing soil rotary by 85% compared with the no practices. The occurrence of Water foxtail was 40 piece $m^{-2}$ on October 16, 29 piece $m^{-2}$ on October 26, and 4 piece $m^{-2}$ when surveying based on the standard of seeding the wheat at 15kg $ha^{-1}$ which decreased as the seeding time got later. According to the wheat seeding quantity 29 piece $m^{-2}$ occurred at 150kg $ha^{-1}$, and 8-11 piece $m^{-2}$ decreasingly at more than 200 kg $ha^{-1}$ of wheat seedlings based on seeding on October 26. As a result of summarizing the above results, crushing the soil by use of rotary before seeding wheat against the end of October, and seeding by increasing the seedling quantity (200 kg $ha^{-1}$) it is judged that the competition damage by weeds including water foxtail can be reduced without any use of herbicide.

Hydrological characteristics and urbanization effects in the Gap river catchment were investigated employing the SWAT model. The hydrological characteristics analysis showed that total runoff in the whole catchment from 2001 to 2004 consists of 44% of groundwater flow, 6% of lateral flow and 50% of surface flow under year 2000 landuse conditions. The analysis of urbanization effect using different landuse maps for year 1975 and 2000 indicated that although 5% increase in urbanized areas did not significantly impact on the total runoff in the whole catchment, a sub-basin where urbanized area increased by 32% over the past 30 years showed $68{\sim}73%$ decrease in groundwater flow and $22{\sim}66%$ increase in surface flow. It was found that urbanization decreased overall soil moisture and percolation rate except for some increase in soil moisture during dry season. Urbanization effect was found more sensitive during a dry year which has less rainfall and higher evapotranspiration than during a wet year. Therefore, from the results of this study we could infer increased flood damage during wet season and dried stream during dry season due to urbanization. To conclude, the results of this study can provide fundamental information to the eco-friendly restoration project for the three major rivers (Gap-cheon, Yudeung-cheon and Daejeon-cheon) in Daejeon Metropolitan City.
A study was carried out to examine the effects of sulfur dioxide gas on soybean plants; at two concentrations(0.2mg/l and 0.5mg/l) and in different fumigation periods, The grain yield of soybeans, sulfur and chlorophyll contents in leaves, and ratios of destroyed leaf were investigated, 1) At the concentration of $SO_2$ 0.5mg/l, a) The yield decrease were 52% and 76.4% at 5 minutes and one houre fumigation period respectively, b) The sulfur contents in leaves were positively correlated with fumigation period and yield decrease, however the water soluble sulfur was superior than the total sulfur in correlation coefficient. 2) At the concentration of $SO_2$ 0.2mg/l; a) The most severe destruction of leaves were observed at noon exposure (10:00-11:00 O'clock) and no visible damage was observed at night exposure (22:00-23:00) b) The sulfur contents in leaves and stems were the highest at noon exposure and the lowest at evening exposure (18:00-19:00 O'clock) chlorophyll contents were the highest at night exposure but, the lowest at noon exposure, c) The ratio of destroyed leaf was positively correlated with the sulfur content of leaves, but negatively correlated with chlorophyll contents. d) Absorbance spectra of chlorophyll in the chlorolast were greatly decreased at noon exposure but slightly decreased at night exposure. The decrease of absorbance spectra was mainly at $456m{\mu}$ and $663m{\mu}$.

The foliage of variegated Solomon's seal is excellent in cut flower arrangements. However, it has a restricted marketing period because the harvesting is limited in spring and summer. The increased interest requires the year-round production, thus techniques for dormancy breaking and forcing without low temperature treatment is needed. Therefore, experiments were conducted to d etermine whether gibberellic acid (GA) could break dormancy in variegated Solomon's seal. Thes prouting of dormant bud did not occur throughout the experiment when $GA_3$$400mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ was applied to dormant rhizomes as a soil drench. However, when plants were treated with a GA drench after scratch with razor blade or were given direct injection of GA, percent sprouting was increased up to 100 or 83.3%, respectively. However, because treatments with razor or syringe may damage internal organs, we tested another method, scarifying the rhizomes with sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl). Rhizome scarification with 4% NaOCl for 6 or 24 hours followed by drench of $GA_3$$400mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ increased the dormancy breaking percentage to 70 or 86.7%, respectively. Moreover, scarified and GA-treated rhizomes produced more leaves than untreated or GA-soil drenched plants in the glasshouse. These results showed the possibility of year-round production of variegated Solomon's seal foliage with rhizome scarification and GA treatments.
Yield of potato is largely influenced by drought stress. This study was conducted in Gangneung and Cheongju during the spring cropping of potato. Potatoes in the Gangneung area were affected by drought but there was no damage due to drought in Cheongju. During the early-growth stage, the contents of inorganic components like available phosphate and growth characteristics of the potato leaf in Cheongju were significantly higher than those in Gangneung but there was no difference after the flowering stage. It was considered that the potato plants cultivated in Cheongju could vigorously grow than that of Gangneung under drought stress. In addition, the content of calcium (Ca), which is a secondary messenger related to aging, was found to be higher in potato plants grown in Cheongju than in Gangneung and accumulated more quickly in potato plants of Cheongju. Because magnesium (Mg) was also found to be higher in potato plants from Gangneung by a wide margin, this phenomenon was thought be related with drought stress. The amounts of all inorganic components absorbed from soil were higher in Cheongju than in Gangneung, showing a relatively higher plant biomass in Cheongju. Correlations of development indexes related to leaf showed less or no relation in Gangneung. According to yield characteristics of the harvest stage, although yield was greatly reduced under drought stress condition, the rate of commercial yield was not significantly affected under the drought stress condition. Consequently, it was considered that these responses to drought stress could be utilized to stabilize potato production under the stressful conditions associated with abnormal climate.

To find out the effect of cadmium(Cd) on growth of major vegetables in Korea, phytotoxicity and absorption of Cd were investigated with chinese cabbage, radish, and lettuce grown in upland soils of different Cd concentrations. Cadmium phytotoxicity was shown by growth retardation and leaf chlorosis in chinese cabbage and lettuce at the early growing stage. The threshold concentrations of growth damage resulting from the significant reduction (5%) of growth and yield of chinese cabbage and lettuce were $50{\sim}100$ and $10{\sim}25$ mg/kg soil, respectively. However, there was no significant reduction of radish yield under Cd treatment of 100 mg/kg soil. As Cd concentrations in soils increased, the contents of Cd in products were significantly increased, basically. The contents of Cd in edible part of chinese cabbage, radish, and lettuce grown at the 5 mg/kg Cd treated soils were 0.13, 0.18, and 3.37 mg/kg FW, respectively. Total absorbed Cd in the vegetables tended to occur in the following order, chinese cabbage > radish > lettuce above 25 mg/kg Cd treated soils whereas lettuce absorbed more Cd than chinese cabbage and radish below 10 mg/kg Cd concentration.

Ancient tombs are typically comprised of confined rooms, which have different spatial characteristics than the external environment because they are covered by heavy layers of soil. In this study, we examined the thermal energy flow from the outside to inside of Songsan-ri tomb No. 6. External heat flows slowly to the inside because of heavy soil layer, and the presence of several rooms and entrances. For this reason, it takes about two months for the air temperature to travel from the outside to the inside of the tomb. Interestingly, the gradational inflow of thermal energy from outside the tomb leads to delicate horizontal and vertical variations in the wall temperature. These micro-environmental differences occur in the inner tomb every year, so we can expect them to cause condensation with regularity. In addition, we show that the previously installed forced circulation air conditioning system risks fatal damage to the mural wall painting. The results of this research suggest an optimal air conditioning system and optimized space planning to conserve Songsan-ri tomb No. 6 and its mural painting.
