The laboratory column experiments were used to transport of metal elements by infiltration-related dispersion and/or diffusion in mine tailing of the Guryong gold mine. The mine tailing shows the neutral pH (for a pore water) and contains quartz, chlorite, pyrite and calcite. Both a non-reactive solute ($Cl^-$ of 100 mg $L^{-1}$) and a reactive solute (1N HCl), were injected continuously through columns. The breakthrough curve in the non-reactive experiment reached at a maximum under 1.5 pore volumes (PV). The longitudinal dispersion (0.607 cm) and hydrodynamic dispersion coefficient ($1.96{\times}10^{-7}cm^{2}sec^{-1}$) were calculated by the slope. In the reactive experiment, the plateau curve was appeared in the pH values of 5.3, 4.5 and 1.7. The releases of metal elements such as Fe, Mn, Al, Cu, Zn, Pb, and Cd were observed to be related to the pH buffering. High concentrations of Mn, Cd and Zn were observed at the first pH plateau (4 PV and pH 5.3), whereas Fe, Cu, Al and Pb were released as the pH decreased to 4.0 or less. The resulting order of metals mobility, based on the effluent water, is Mn=Cd>Zn>Cu>Fe>Al>Pb.
Fine suspended solids from mine drainage draw attentions due to their potential adverse influences on the water quality, such as increasing turbidity and degrading aesthetic landscape. Currently, sand filter beds are adapted in some mine drainage treating systems. However, more efficient system is in demand, as the existing sand beds reveal some problems, such as frequent maintenance intervals. Various filtering mediums including fly ash, mine tailing aggregates and the sand were tested for improving the current system, using column experimental set-up. Mine drainage samples were collected from the current treating systems in the abandoned H coal mine. The experiment was run for 7 days. Suspended solids recorded as 100.9 mg/L and the value exceeds the current standard, 30 mg/L. Sand was proved to still be the optimum medium for the fine suspended solids, compared to fly ash and fly ash + sand. Mine tailing aggregates were placed at the exit of the columns, substituting gravels. The tailing aggregates is made by mine tailings and clay. Sand bed filters can also be improved by mixing granular activated carbon, which was found to be economical and efficient in the batch experiment, conducted at the same time.

Managed aquifer recharge (MAR) is a promising water management strategy for securing stable water resources to overcome water shortage and water quality deterioration caused by global environmental changes. A MAR demonstration site was selected at Imgok-ri, Sangju-si, Korea, based on screening for the frequency of drought events and local water supply situations. The abundant groundwater discharging from a nearby abandoned coal mine is one of the potential recharge water sources for the MAR implementation. However, it has elevated levels of arsenic (~12 ㎍/L). In this study, the potential of the natural attenuation of arsenic by the field geological media was investigated using batch and column experiments. The adsorption and desorption parameters were obtained for two drill core samples (GM1; 21.8~22.8 m and GM2; 26.0~27.8 m depth) recovered from the potentially water-conducting fracture-zones in the injection well. The effluent arsenic concentrations were monitored during the continuous flow of the mine drainage water through the columns packed with the core samples. GM2 removed about 60% of arsenic in the influent (0.1 mg-As/L) while GM1 removed about 20%. The results suggest that natural attenuation is an acitive process occurring during the MAR operation, potentially lowering the arsenic level in the mine drainage water below the regulatory standard for drinking water. This study hence demonstrates that using the mine drainage water as the recharge water source is a viable option at the MAR demonstration site.
FeS, as a natural reduced iron mineral, has been recognized to be a viable reactive material for As(III) sequestration in natural and engineered systems. In this study, FeS-coated sand packed columns were tested to evaluate the As(III) removal capacities under anaerobic conditions at pH 5, 7 and 9. The column obtained As(III) removal capacity was then compared with the capacity result obtained from batch reactors. In the comparison, two different approaches were used. The first approach was used the total As(III) removal capacity which method was proved to be useful for interpreting pH 5 system. The second approach was used to consider sorption non-linearity and proved to be useful for interpreting the pH 9. The results demonstrated that a mechanistic understanding of the different removal processes at different pH conditions is important to interpret the column experimental results. At pH 5, where the precipitation of arsenic sulfide plays the major role in the removal of arsenic, the column shows a greater removal efficiency than the batch system due to the continuous dissolution of sulfide and precipitation of arsenic sulfide. At pH 9, where adsorption mainly governs the arsenic removal, the sorption nonlinearity should be considered in the estimation of the column capacity. This study highlighted the importance of understanding reaction mechanism to predict column performance using batch-obtained experimental results.

To improve concrete-filled tube (CFT) columns, an octagonal concrete-filled tube (OCFT) column was developed. Because the OCFT column requires a small boring diameter, the OCFT column is suitable for Top-Down construction method. In this study, the compression performance of OCFT column to be used as Top-Down pile foundation was verified using centrifuge equipment. Under 12 g centrifugal acceleration, the bearing capacities of the pile foundations of OCFT and H-shaped sections were tested. When the pile foundations were embedded in soil of full depth, 45 % of the design strength, which was assumed to be the construction load, was supported by the OCFT and H-shaped sections in the elastic states. When the pile foundations were embedded in soil of half depth, the buckling of the pile foundations was not investigated. After the loading test, the rock at the bottom of pile foundation, which had a strength of 3.5 MPa, was not damaged due to 45 % of the design strength.
The cells obtained from diesel contaminated site were tested for diesel degradation by culturing them on the culture medium that contained diesel as the only carbon source. Two strains that grew well in the culture media were separated: one formed white colony and another strain formed yellow colony. When they were cultured together, much higher diesel degradation was obtained compares to that of individual cell culture. Mixed culture of white and yellow colony forming strains grew well with 1%(v/v) diesel and the addition of growth nutrients increased the diesel degradation. Additional nitrogen source was efficient for higher diesel degradation (over 90%) when it was compared with that without nitrogen source. When mixed culture of white and yellow colony forming cells were applied to the soil column system contaminated by diesel, 30 mL/min of air flow rate was found to be sufficient to degrade diesel oil. The diesel degradation did not increase noticeably at higher flow rate. The addition of nitrogen source resulted in the increase in diesel degradability.
Energized-functional water (EFW) and powder (EFP) were manufactured by Kyungwon Institute of Life Science, Seoul, through a series of processes; tap water ultra-purification energy imprinting with catalysts in platinum columns mixing energy-imprinted water + activated zeolites + photosynthetic bacteria fermenting at $25^{\circ}C$ filtering EFW and/or EFP. A single application of EFP to soil under tree canopy before bud burst, combined with three EFW applications to soil during growth of 'Fuji' apples (Malus domestica Borkh.) resulted in a higher Ca concentrations in fruit skins and flesh, and lower Ca and N concentrations in leaves and shoot-bark tissues. EFW also stimulated the net photosynthesis of leaves and root activity. Soluble solid concentrations (SSC) and anthocyanin levels of fruits were also significantly increased at harvest, producing greater firmness and less core browning during storage at $0^{\circ}C$. However, there was no significant difference in titratable acidity of fruit juice between the EFW treatment and the controls.
Loss of cationic zeolites saturated with different ions, sodium, potasium, ammonium, magnesium and calcium ions, and changes of hydraulic conductivity were investigated in labortory. The 0.5 to 1mm sands and the zeolite particles passed 0.1mm sieve were used in the column tests. The amount of zeolite particle loss was in order of Na- > K- > $NH_4-$ saturated zeolites, and little loss was observed from Mg and Ca saturated zeolites. The loss of zeolite particles was mainly due to dispersion in solution, which was prominant when 0.01N dilute mono ionic solution and distilled water were percolated. The results also showed that the changes in hydraulic conductivity were greater in the columns where the loss of dispersed zeolite particles was higher.
This study proposes and demonstrates a smart monitoring system that uses transmission lines embedded in a reinforced concrete structure to detect the presence of defects through changes in the electromagnetic waves generated and measured by a time-domain reflectometer. Laboratory experiments were first conducted to identify the presence of voids in steel-concrete composite columns. The results indicated that voids in the concrete caused a positive signal reflection, and the amplitude of this signal decreased as the water content of the soil in the void increased. Multiple voids resulted in a decrease in the amplitude of the signal reflected at each void, effectively identifying their presence despite amplitude reduction. Furthermore, the electromagnetic wave velocity increased when voids were present, decreased as the water content of the soil in the voids increased, and increased with the water-cement ratio and curing time. Field experiments were then conducted using bored piles with on-center (sound) and off-center (defective) steel-reinforcement cage alignments. The results indicated that the signal amplitude in the defective pile section, where the off-center cage was poorly covered with concrete, was greater than that in the pile sections where the cage was completely covered with concrete. The crosshole sonic logging results for the same defective bored pile failed to identify an off-center cage alignment defect. Therefore, this study demonstrates that electromagnetic waves can be a useful tool for monitoring the health and integrity of reinforced concrete structures.
In order to elucidate the adsorption and leaching characteristics of the insecticide imidacloprid in two types of paddy soils near Suwon, this experiment was carried out with $[^{14}C]$imidacloprid as a radiotracer. In an adsorption study conducted using $[^{14}C]$imidacloprid in 2 test soils, the adsorption coefficient was higher in soil A $(K_f\;2.6)$ than that in soil B $(K_f\;1.7)$. As calculated from Freundlich constant, distribution coefficients and half lives in soils, GUS indices showed low leachabilities of imidacloprid treated on the paddy soils into the groundwater. The amount of imidacloprid leached from the soil columns during the 4 weeks of leaching was less than 2% of the originally treated $^{14}C$. In the leaching test the amounts of $^{14}C$ activities distributed in the soil layer of 0-10 cm were more than 80% of the originally tented $^{14}C$ and those in rice plants were less than 3% of the originally treated $^{14}C$, suggesting that imidacloprid has very low teachability and bioavailability.
