Due to the nature of the conjunctive Cone Penetration Test(CPT), which does not verify the actual sample directly, geotechnical engineers commonly classify the underground geomaterials using CPT results with the classification diagrams proposed by various researchers. However, such classification diagrams may fail to reflect local geotechnical characteristics, potentially resulting in misclassification that does not align with the actual stratification in regions with strong local features. To address this, this paper presents an objective method for more accurate local CPT soil classification criteria, which utilizes C4.5 decision tree models trained with the CPT results from the clay-dominant southern coast of Korea and the sand-dominant region in South Carolina, USA. The results and analyses demonstrate that the C4.5 algorithm, in conjunction with oversampling, outlier removal, and pruning methods, can enhance and optimize the decision tree-based CPT soil classification model.

The purpose of this study is the understanding to changes in the characteristic of soil structure and classification, atterberg limits, undrained shear strength and consolidation of clayey soil dependent on pH of soil pore water. A series of tests including consistency tests, uniaxial compressive tests, vane tests and oedometer tests are performed on. The test results indicated that pH changes in the soil pH resulted in changes in the soil structure and classification, stress-strain behavior. Specially, when pH is conditioned to 7, liquid limit, undrained shear strength and preconsolidation pressure are the largest.
Land information is important for the international agricultural companies. This study investigated the agriculture and soil information in Sri Lanka. This study is the results from investigation of soil properties and agricultural properties determined by the Soil Taxonomy classification system for the soils in Sri Lanka. The order of the main agricultural imports in Sri Lanka was wheat > refined Sugar > dry Onion > Rice > Lentils. The climate of Sri Lanka is divided into three climatic zones. There are a wet zone, an intermediate zone, and a dry zone. Rainfall of the wet zone was $3,000-5,000mm\;year^{-1}$. The rainfall of the dry zone was less than $1,000m^{-1}$. The intermediate zone was in the middle area. Soil series of Sri Lanka were 109 in total. Detailed information of soil series was: 6 of soil Orders, 15 of Suborders, 39 of Great groups, and 56 of Subgroups. Soil texture of topsoil was much more coarse, but subsoil was gravelly coarse soil. Soil of Sri Lanka was classified as a Soil Order. The orders were Entisols > Alfisols > Ultisols > Inceptisols > Histosols > Vertisols.

The advantage of piezocone penetration test is a guarantee of continuous data, which is a source of reliable interpretation of target soil layer. Many researches have been carried out f3r several decades and several classification charts have been developed to classify in-situ soil from the cone penetration test result. Since most present classification charts or methods were developed based on the data which were compiled over the world except Korea, they should be verified to be feasible for Korean soil. Furthermore, sometimes their charts provide different soil classification results according to the different input parameters. However, unfortunately, revision of those charts is quite difficult or almost impossible. In this research a new soil classification model is proposed by using fuzzy C-mean clustering and neuro-fuzzy theory based on the 5371 CPT results and soil logging results compiled from 17 local sites around Korea. Proposed neuro-fuzzy soil classification model was verified by comparing the classification results f3r new data, which were not used during learning process of neuro-fuzzy model, with real soil log. Efficiency of proposed neuro-fuzzy model was compared with other soft computing classification models and Robertson method for new data.
National inventory of soil and groundwater contamination is an efficient decision-making tool to identify and manage existing or potential contaminated sources and contaminants. It has been used as basic data for establishing the scheme of regulations and remediation plans of soil and groundwater contamination in developed countries. This study examined classification of existing or potential sources of soil and groundwater contamination from various countries to suggest implications that required for development of classification of soil and groundwater contamination sources in Korea. Each country has provided a list of currently or potentially contaminating activities or landuses and identified some of the potential contaminants related to those contamination sources. Consideration of sources which had not been mentioned or regarded as contamination sources before was suggested for Korea situation. In addition, it is necessary to compile a list of existing data and information as much as possible to develop a detailed and practical list of various contamination sources.

Land suitability assessment for apples and pears was conducted with soil and climate information in South Korea. In doing so, we intended to preserve land and increase the productivity by providing valuable information regarding where more suitable areas for apples or pears are located. We used soil classification driven by soil environmental information system developed by National Institute of Agricultural Science, RDA, and also used climate classification in digital agro-climate map database for which is made by National Institute of Horticultural and Herbal Science. We combined both soil and climate classification results using a most-limiting characteristic method. The combined results showed very similar patterns with the results by classification based on soil information. Such results seem to come from the fact that the classification results by soil relatively lower than those by climate information. The results by soil classification seem to be too downgraded and checking if the final classification ranges in soil are reasonably made is strongly required. Although the most limiting characteristic method had been used widely in land suitability assessment, adapting the method based on results by soil and climate can be influenced by one downgraded factor. Therefore, alternative ways should be carefully considered for increasing the accuracy.
In this study, CN value was estimated by using detailed soil map and land cover characteristic against upper basin of Kumho watermark located on the upper basin of Kumho river and the hydrologic morphological characteristic factors were extracted from the basin by using the DEM document. Also the runoff analysis was conducted by the WMS model in order to study how the assumed CN value affects the runoff characteristic. First of all, as a result of studying the soil type in this study area, mostly D type soil was Identified by the application of the 1987 classification criteria. However, by that in 1995, B type soil and C type soil were distributed more widely in that area. When CN value was classified by the 1995 classification criteria, it was estimated lower than in 1987, as a result of comparing the estimated CNs by those standars. Also it was assumed that CN value was underestimated when the plan for Geum-ho river maintenance was drawn up. As a result of the analysis of runoff characteristic, the pattern of generation of the classification criteria of soil groups appeared to be similar, but in the case of the application of the classification criteria in 1995, the peak rate of runoff was found to be smaller on the whole than in the case of the application of the classification criteria in 1987. Also when the statistical data such as the prediction errors, the mean squared errors, the coefficient of determination and other data emerging from the analysis, was looked over in total, it seemed appropriate to apply the 1995 classification criteria when hydrological soil classification group was applied. As the result of this study, however, the difference of the result of the statistical dat was somewhat small. In future study, it is necessary to follow up evidence about soil application On many more watersheds and in heavy rain.
This study developed the classification of National Soil Quality Monitoring Network (NSQM) and its site selection criteria to meet the recently established purposes of the NSQM. The NSQM were suggested by this study to classify into the six-purposes site groups from the current classification of land uses. The six purposes site groups were 1) intensive observation sites, 2) contaminant loading sites, 3) human activity sites, 4) background sites, 5) river soil sites, and 6) sites near the groundwater quality monitoring wells. Furthermore, this study developed the site selection criteria of NSQM utilizing the accumulated NSQM data, road traffic data, chemical emission data, census, soil information, and the literature related to soil quality variation due to contaminant loads. For selecting suitable sites for NSQM, this study used road traffic, chemical emission, the distance from the contaminant sources, and population information as specific criteria. The suggested site classification and criteria were appled for the current 100 NSQM sites for evaluation. Forty sites were met to the criteria suggested by this study, but sixty sites were not met to the criteria. However, some of the sixty sites also included the obscure sites that their addresses were not apparent to find them.
To apply piezocone test to soil classification, several classification charts based on correlations between its results and basic characteristics of soils have been developed. However, it is necessary to investigate their applicability to Korean soil, since they were the results obtained from the limited number of foreign sites. In this study, 41 piezocone penetration bests for various sixtes spreading widely over Korean territory were carried out. Correlations between piezocone teat results and basic characteristics and the applicability of existing classification charts were investigated. Conclusively, new classification charts based, on Unified Soil Classification System were developed with a local confidence.
