  • The adaptabilities of various nitrohumates (-K, -Na and $-NH_4$ salt) as a soil conditioner and a raw material for soluble phosphatic fertilizer were studied. 1. Nitrohumates (especially $-NH_4$ salt) protect the soil from fissures and control the phosphoric acid adsorptive functions of soils considerably. 2. Most effective nitrohumic acids as a soil conditioner were prepared with 15% $HNO_3$ solution composed of five times of original humic acids (by weight) at $80^{\circ}C$ for 2 hrs under continuous stirring. 3. When 50% (by weight) of $NH_4$-nitrohumate were added to apatites in water and boiled for 2 hrs, maximum 26% of $P_2O_5$(apatite contains 37% of $P_2O_5$) were changed into water soluble forms.

  • This investigation was undertaken to clarify the effects of application of chemical fertilizers (Compound fertilizer and commercial compost) and organic matters (straw and clover) on changes of the composition of soil actinomycetes flora. Actinomycetes were isolated from chemical fertilizer and organic materials treated soils, and then grown on HV agar plate. The isolated strains were classified by Bergey's manual based on the morphological characteristics and color of substrate mycelium of actinomycetes. The number of actinomycetes increased 4 times in control, 36 times in clover, 20 times in straw, 5 times in chemical fertilizer and 4 times in commercial compost treated soil after 14th day of incubation. This result suggests that the application of straw or clover is more effective to increase the number of actinomycetes than compound fertilizer or commercial compost. It also showed that the application of chemical fertilizer or organic materials considerably changed the composition of soil actinomycetes flora. The proportion of streptomyces strains to the isolated total actinomycetes was 62% in control, 60% in clover, 68% in straw, 67% in chemical fertilizer and 64% in commercial compost treated soils at the 14th day.

  • The study was carried out to confirm the changes of soil physico-chemical properties and population of Fusarium solani by soil managements at preplanning fields for ginseng cultivation. Soil porosity and aggregation had been significantly increased during the managements while exchangeable nitrogen content and bulk density of the soil had been decreased. Available phosphate and exchangeable potassium content, in addition, seemed to be slightly increased. And soil aggregation showed positive correlation with clay, organic matter, soil moisture, and Ca content in the soil but negative with K content. Decrease rate of NH4-N and NO3-N content after soil managements were 55% and 41% in average, respectively. And better decrease effect for NH4-N was obtained in sand loam soil whereas no effect for NO3-N with soil textures. The more ploughing seemed to result in less propagules of F solani in the soil, however there was non significant decrease in population of the pathogen after the soil management. Number of F. solani in soil was significantly less in the fields where gramineous and leguminous crops had been grown as a precrop than other crops tested. Meanwhile there was no correlation between soil texture and population of the pathogen in the soil.

  • This study was conducted to select native ground cover plants for sod culture in an organic apple orchard by estimating the effect of three native ground cover plants, Glechoma hederacea, Thymus magnus, and Ixeris stolonifera, on the soil coverage, time-periodic weed occurrence, fruit characteristics, and soil chemical properties. The plant height of G. hederace, T. magnus and I. stolonifera were 15.0 ㎝, 13.4 ㎝ and 7.2 ㎝, respectively. The dry weight of G. hederace, T. magnus and I. stolonifera were 463 ㎏/10a, 247 ㎏/10a, and 255 ㎏/10a, respectively. The plant height and dry weight of G. hederacea were higher than in the other species. T. magnus and I. stolonifera having relatively lower soil cover rate during their life cycle produced a lot of weeds in the orchard as compared with the control. In contrast, G. hederacea showed 100 percentage of ground cover in the first year, and maintained high percentage of ground cover in the growing season of ‘Tsugaru’ apple for another 2 years. When the soil was covered with G. hederacea in the orchard for 3 years, the amount of weed was only 114 ㎏/10a and number of weeding was also reduced about 33% compared with control as well as the other species. There were no differences in the tree growth and fruit characteristics between the native ground cover plants and the control; however, positive effects of native ground cover plants on soil chemical properties were found. In G. hederacea, available P2O4content in soils remarkably increased and was a significant difference among native species. In addition, cation (Ca, Mg and K) content in soils increased by 39% in Ca, 6% in Mg, and 11% in K at G. hederacea compared with control. These results suggest that G. hederacea could be advantageous in terms of reducing the amount of herbicide applied and the labor required for weed control, and controlling soil chemical properties; therefore, it is a good candidate for sod culture in an organic apple orchard.

  • This study investigated the effect of vegetation mat on plant growth and salt reduction in the soil treated with high concentration deicing salt. In order to measure soil chemical characteristics and plant growth, three native groundcover plants (Dendranthema zawadskii var. latilobum, Dendranthema boreale, and Kalimeris yomena) were grown in each of the three plastic containers (50.0 cm width × 35.0 cm length × 8.5 cm deep) with a high concentration treatment of calcium chloride deicing salt. There were two treatments: control, and BVM that combines B (blanket) and VM (vegetation mat). 1,600 g of soil was placed on the top of the drainage layer with 290 g of perlite, 100 seeds each of the three native plants with three repetitions were sowed, and 10 g/L of calcium chloride deicing salt was added in the treatment. As a result of the chemical properties of soil, soil in control treatment was acidic and soil electrical conductivity in BVM was the lowest. Also, exchangeable cations (K+, Ca2+, Na+, and Mg2+) in soil and all the three plants were significantly decreased in the BVM treatment. Meanwhile, the germination rate of Dendranthema zawadskii var. latilobum was the highest under high concentration deicing salt in compared to the two plants. Overall, three native groundcover plant growth was higher in the BVM than control treatment significantly. These results suggest that the treatment of blanket vegetation mat has a positive effect on soil and plant growth in soil damaged by deicing salt.

  • This experiment was conducted to investigate the direction or orientation of clay particle movement in argillic horizons (Bt) for clarifying the soil classification of soils. Soil samples were collected from 22 soil series containing Bt horizons. Physical and chemical characteristics and mineral and chemical compositions of clay in the soils were analyzed. Micoromorphological characteristics of the Bt horizons were also investigated with thin sections of the natural undisturbed and oriented soil samples. Average clay content in the Bt horizons was 28% and 1.33 times higher comparing to that in the surface layer. Soil pH was higher, but cation exchange capacity (CEC) and organic matter content were lower in Bt horizon than those in the surface layer. There was an evidence of clay accumulation in Bt horizons of all soil series examined except Bangog series. Although there was an increase of clay content in the horizons in Bangog series, the clay was not originated from illuviation process. The translocation of clay was in the order of an 2:1 expandable clay minerals > 2:1 non-expandable clay minerals > 1:1 clay minerals. The illuvial substances in argillic horizon were composed with clay, amorphous iron and opaque mineral. The micoromorphological features of Bt horizon were void coating, channel infilling and grain coating. There was an apparent boundary between clay coating and the groundmass in residuum and colluvium, but Bt horizon of alluvium was composed of a skew plane amputated by the physical operation.

  • The relatedness of naturalized Bradyhizobium japonitum populations with soil physico-chemical characteristics as affected by paddy rice-upland soybean rotation cropping with conventional and none fertilization in Chilgog clay loam soils were determined as follows. The populations of B. japonicum in soils were increased from about $10^1$ in continuous paddy upto $10^1cells/g.soil$ only in one-year rotation of upland use with soybean cropping. Compared to the densities in plots of conventional fertilization, those in none fertilization were high ranging from 1.9 to 10 fold in 2-year upland use rotation and both in 3-year upland use rotation and 4-year upland use, respectively. The populations were positively correlated with soil organic matter $contents(r=0.83^*),\;Ca/K(r=0.74^*),\;and(Ca+Mg)/K(r=0.72^*)$ and were negatively correlated with soil $hardness(r=-0.73^*)$. And the soil populations increased by paddy-upland rotation resulted in superior symbiotic potentials to those in continuous paddy use in terms of nodule mass, nitrogenase activity, and soy-bean shoot dry weight.

  • The river-bed sediments from the major river basins were analysed for the chemical and physical properties to evaluate environmental safety for the agricultural uses. The samples were taken from 16 sites of Han river, 36 of Geumgang river, 27 of Yeongsan river, and 140 of Nakdong river. The total of 219 samples from the 28 counties were taken from the surface of the sediments at the depth of 50 cm. The particle density of the sediments was greater than $2.63Mg\;m^{-3}$ and the whole range of the density was $2.60{\sim}2.69Mg\;m^{-3}$, the average particle size was 0.7 mm whereas the size range was 0.075~0.85 mm. The analyses of the particle sizes by basins showed that Han and Geumgang river had particle sizes of 0.075~0.85 mm, while Geumgang and Yeongsan river had particle sizes of 0.25~0.85 mm. Geumgang and Yeongsan river tended to have greater particle sizes. The average values of the chemical properties were 6.3 for pH, $0.16dS\;m^{-1}$ for EC, $8g\;kg^{-1}$ for organic matter, $101mg\;kg^{-1}$ for available phosphate, 0.39, 3.47, and $0.93cmol_c\;kg^{-1}$ for exchangeable potassium, calcium, and magnesium respectively. The greatest property at each basin was pH for Han river, Ec, available phosphate and exchangeable sodium for Geumgang river, organic matter, exchangeable calcium and magnesium for Yeongsan river, and exchangeable potassium for Nakdong river.

  • Nowadays, geosynthetics for reinforcement and protection are widely applied to the waste landfill site. Current research indicates the potential for progressive failure in geosynthetic-soil system depends on the interface shear strength governed by several intrinsic factors such as moisture, normal stress, chemical, etc. In particular, the effect of the acidity and basicity from the leachate is intensively reviewed to assess the chemical reaction mechanism of interface shear strength under the cyclic loading condition. New multi-purpose interface apparatus(M-PIA) has been manufactured and the cyclic direct shear tests using submerged geosynthetics and soils under the different chemical conditions have been performed, consequently, the thickness of interface and shear stress degradation are verified. The basic schematic of the Disturbed State Concept(DSC) is employed to estimate the shear stress degradation in the interface, then, normalized disturbed function is obtained and analyzed to describe the shear stress degradation of geosynthetic-soil interface with chemical influence factors under dynamic condition.
