In this study, basic physical properties were measured for ASCO EQ85 cationic surfactant of triethanolamine-ester quaternary ammonium salt and effect of pH on softening performance on fabrics was investigated using zeta potential measurement and adsorption experiment by quartz crystal microbalance. The CMC of the surfactant was near $3{\times}10^{-3}mol/L$ and the surface tension at CMC was about 40 mN/m. The interfacial tension measurement between 1 wt% aqueous solution and n-dodecane measured by spinning drop tensiometer showed that interfacial tension slightly increased with an increase in pH but the equilibration time was not affected by pH. The surfactant adsorption was found to increase with an increase in surfactant concentration and was also affected by pH of surfactant solution. The friction factor for fabrics treated with ASCO EQ85 surfactant was shown to increase with pH and better softening effect was found under acidic conditions. Half-life for foams generated with ASCO EQ85 surfactant solution increased with pH, which indicated an increase in foam stability with pH.
The mechanical properties of the concrete-frozen soil interface play a significant role in the stability and service performance of construction projects in cold regions. Current research mainly focuses on the precast concrete-frozen soil interface, with limited consideration for the more realistic cast-in-place concrete-frozen soil interface. The two construction methods result in completely different contact surface morphologies and exhibit significant differences in mechanical properties. Therefore, this study selects silty clay as the research object and conducts direct shear tests on the concrete-frozen soil interface under conditions of initial water content ranging from 12% to 24%, normal stress from 50 kPa to 300 kPa, and freezing temperature of -3℃. The results indicate that (1) both interface shear stress-displacement curves can be divided into three stages: rapid growth of shear stress, softening of shear stress after peak, and residual stability; (2) the peak strength of both interfaces increases initially and then decreases with an increase in water content, while residual strength is relatively less affected by water content; (3) peak strength and residual strength are linearly positively correlated with normal stress, and the strength of ice bonding is less affected by normal stress; (4) the mechanical properties of the cast-in-place concrete-frozen soil interface are significantly better than those of the precast concrete-frozen soil interface. However, when the water content is high, the former's mechanical performance deteriorates much more than the latter, leading to severe strength loss. Therefore, in practical engineering, cast-in-place concrete construction is preferred in cases of higher negative temperatures and lower water content, while precast concrete construction is considered in cases of lower negative temperatures and higher water content. This study provides reference for the construction of frozen soil-structure interface in cold regions and basic data support for improving the stability and service performance of cold region engineering.
The cut-slope of a large-sectional tunnel portal is recognized as a potential area of weakness due to unstable stress distribution and possible permanent displacement. This paper presents a case study of a slope failure and remediation for a large-scale cut-slope at a tunnel portal. Extensive rock-slope brittle failure occurred along discontinuities in the rock mass after 46 mm of rainfall, which caused instability of the upper part of the cut-slope. Based on a geological survey and face mapping, the reason for failure is believed to be the presence of thin clay fill in discontinuities in the weathered rock mass and consequent saturationinduced joint weakening. The granite-gneiss rock mass has a high content of alkali-feldspar, indicating a vulnerability to weathering. Immediately before the slope failure, a sharp increase in displacement rate was indicated by settlement-time histories, and this observation can contribute to the safety management criteria for slope stability. In this case study, emergency remediation was performed to prevent further hazard and to facilitate reconstruction, and counterweight fill and concrete filling of voids were successfully applied. For ultimate remediation, the grid anchor-blocks were used for slope stabilization, and additional rock bolts and grouting were applied inside the tunnel. Limit-equilibrium slope stability analysis and analyses of strereographic projections confirmed the instability of the original slope and the effectiveness of reinforcing methods. After the application of reinforcing measures, instrumental monitoring indicated that the slope and the tunnel remained stable. This case study is expected to serve as a valuable reference for similar engineering cases of large-sectional slope stability.

This paper presents a reliable numerical procedure for nonlinear time-history analysis of space steel frames subjected to dynamic loads. Geometric nonlinearities of member (P-$\delta$) and frame (P-$\Delta$) are taken into account by the use of stability functions in framed stiffness matrix formulation. The gradual yielding along the member length and over the cross section is included by using a tangent modulus concept and a softening plastic hinge model based on the New-Orbison yield surface. A computer program utilizing the average acceleration method for the integration scheme is developed to numerically solve the equation of motion of framed structure formulated in an incremental form. The results of several numerical examples are compared with those derived from using beam element model of ABAQUS program to illustrate the accuracy and the computational efficiency of the proposed procedure.

The abandoned mines causing settlement of the surface above and collapse of the cavities are the major influencing factor on the stability of the nearby underground structures. To prevent the harmful effect, the backfill methods are commonly applied to the cavities although the design criteria and the analysis method are not properly addressed in some cases. An approximate analytical method together with the numerical technique is considered in this study to simulate the gradual deterioration of the rock masses around the cavities and, therefore, the influential zone to the underground structures passing through the cavities. Also considered in this study is the backfill effect on the stability of the rock masses around the cavities. Specifically, the incomplete backfill effect is compared with that of the idealized backfill method by adopting elasto-plastic analysis involving a strain softening material law.

In a plastic metal forming of thermally rate-sensitive material, the localized shear band stems from evolution of a narrow region in which intensive plastic flow occurs. And it give rise to fatal fracture with plastic instability. The objectives of this study are to investigate the localization behavior by using numerical method and predict the failure for WHA(Tungsten Heavy Alloy). In this work, the implicit finite difference scheme is used because of the advantage about convergence and the numerical stability. This study is based on an analysed material with hardening as well as thermally softening behavior which includes isotropic strain hardening and observed the extension of localization within shear band according to material properties.

The practice of introducing and grouting reinforced fiber glass pipes or bar into the core to be excavated to maintain stable the tunnel face during excavation has been applied to many tunnels, where difficult geotechnical conditions are present, with good results in terms of safety and speed of works. This reinforcing technique, initially developed to be used jointly with the mechanical precut in clay, has been widely used with other geotechnical conditions as the only type of reinforcement or joined with other ground consolidation and/or reinforcement techniques (i.e. steel pipes or jet-grouting umbrella). At present same numerical researches have been carried out to find which are the real working conditions of the reinforcing elements but no final results have been obtained for the definition of the best design approaches. In this work the results of a three dimensional parametric numerical model is presented.
Formation of Shear Band under the adiabatic condition is widely observed In the engineering materials during rapidly forming process lot a thermally rate-dependent material. The shear band stems from evolution of a narrow region in which an intensive plastic flow occurs. The shear band often plays a role of a precursor of the ductile fracture during a forming process. The objective of this study is to investigate the localization behavior using numerical method. In this work, the implicit finite difference scheme is employed due to the ease of convergence and the numerical stability It is noted that physical and mechanical properties of materials determine how the shear band is formed and then localized. Material properties can be characterized with inertia number dissipation number and diffusion number. It is observed that the dimensionless numbers effect on localization. Using a parametric study, comparison was made between CRS-1018 steel with WHA (tungsten heavy alloy). The deformation behavior of material in this study include an isotropic hardening as well as thermal softening. Moreover, this study suggests that a kinematic hardening constitutive relation be required to predict a more accurate strain level at a shear band.
The passive control of structures using a pendulum tuned mass damper has been extensively studied in the technical literature. As the frequency of the pendulum depends only on its length and the acceleration of gravity, to tune the frequency of the pendulum with that of the structure, the pendulum length is the only design variable. However, in many cases, the required length and the space necessary for its installation are not compatible with the design. In these cases, one can replace the classical pendulum by a virtual pendulum which consists of a mass moving over a curved surface, allowing thus for a greater flexibility in the absorber design, since the length of the pendulum becomes irrelevant and the shape of the curved surface can be optimized. A mathematical model for a building with a pendular tuned mass damper and a detailed parametric analysis is conducted to study the influence of this device on the nonlinear oscillations and stability of the main system under harmonic and seismic base excitation. In addition to the circular profiles, different curved surfaces with softening and hardening characteristics are analyzed. Also, the influence of impact on energy dissipation is considered. A detailed parametric analysis is presented showing that the proposed damper can not only reduce sharply the displacements, and consequently the internal forces in the main structure, but also the accelerations, increasing user comfort. A review of the relevant aspects is also presented.
Pressure sintered SiC specimens were joined using MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 (MAS) glass which has a thermal expansion coefficient similar to that of SiC. MAS melt showed excellent behavior of wetting on the SiC substrate over 148$0^{\circ}C$, and the wettability was much influenced by the joining atmosphere. The joining was conducted at 150$0^{\circ}C$ for 30 min in Ar atmosphere. The flexural strength of the joined specimen shows 342~380 MPa up to 80$0^{\circ}C$, which is almost the same as that of as-recieved SiC specimen. However, the flexural strength of the joined specimen decreased to about 80 MPa at 90$0^{\circ}C$ due to softening of the glass melt. The analyses od XRD and WDS show that the reaction between the SiC specimen and the MAS melt produces the oxycarbide glass, which had a high strength and a good stability at high temperatures.
