  • Geosynthetic damage has attracted a major attention since the introduction of geotextiles for civil engineering applications. In this study 3 pilot trial embankments were carried out to investigate the behaviours of reinforced embankments over soft cohesive soils and to find the optimum methodology of embankments over soft soils. As the seamed part of polyester mat (PET, tensile strength 15 ton) used in the first full-scale field test was ruptured under progressing rotational slope failure because of unexpectedly rapid construction of embankments, the excessive pore water pressures were measured. On the soil behavior where tension explosion of mat was continued, pore pressure larger than the one caused by embankment height was measured. Especially, at the depth of 5.0 m under the ground pore pressure increased over long term. It was discussed with respect to the height of embankment and heaving behavior of soft soils.

  • In case of uneven surcharge like backfill or embankment after constructing caisson applied on the deep soft marine deposits, lateral deformation of soft soils would happen due to plastic deformation of soil particles by increase of excess pore water pressure. Lateral deformation of soil will result in the caisson displacement which affects soft soil-caisson structure safety. Soft soil was improved by soil compaction pile method, and then gravity caisson was installed. Soil deformations were monitored and analyzed with step by step backfill and embankment behind the caisson. Amount and speed of lateral deformation after the installation of caissons were closely related with the time of backfill and embankment. The relationship between maximum lateral displacement($\Delta_y$) in front of caisson and settlement($\Delta_s$) can be expressed as $\Delta_y=(0.0871)\Delta_s+122.95$. Soft soil depth did not affect the lateral displacement of caisson in this study, which can be explained the soft soil improvement under the caisson by S.C.P. method. Substantially the amount and speed of the lateral deformation of caisson were closely related with the uneven surcharging rate behind caisson.

  • In order to understand the mechanism of cementation of soft soils treated with bacteria, three types of specimens(untreated, normal bacteria concentration treated, and high bacteria concentration treated) were made. Scanning Electron Microscope(SEM), EDX and X-ray diffraction(XRD) analyses were performed on the soft silt and loose sand specimens. Compared with the untreated specimen, a clearer cementation between particles was observed in the high bacteria concentration treated specimen. Based on the scanning electron microscope(SEM) EDX analyses, more calcium carbonate was observed in the specimen treated with high bacteria concentration than other specimens. On the basis of the preliminary results, it appears that microbial cementation can occur in the soft soil. Further study on the cementation of soils using bacteria is necessary to validate this result.

  • This study is on the increasement of strength about soft ground improvement material using waste residual(paper fly ash, coke ash, slag) by fire. Through this study the authors have analyzed the strength improvement of mixed soft silty sand with improvement materials. The strength of mixed soils with high mixture ratio and more curing days increased. But CA-30(cokes 60%) make more low strength improvement than others. Therefore the authors find out that paper fly ash+cokes, paper fly ash+slag or cokes+slag improvement material is more effect in improvement of soft silty sand than cokes+cenlent. And Ettringite reaction is free mixed soils with more than two materials.

  • In this paper, 4 representative soft clayey soils in south Korea are selected to estimate the geotechnical characteristics and provide the instructions avaliable for construction works; Inchon Coast, Kum River Estuary, Kwangyang Bay, and Nakdong River Estuary. Total 2250 boring data are collected to construct the data base system on selected areas from Korea geotech DB system, scientific journals, theses, and site investigation reports. Considering the geological, topographical and regional features, geotechnical properties, deformation and strength characteristics of 4 soft clayey soils are evaluated by analyzing the constructed DB system statistically.

  • This study investigates the existing theoretical backgrounds for bearing capacity determination according to the plasticity of soils when unsymmetrical surcharge is loaded on polluted soft soils. It also investigates the behavior of the displacement and bearing capacity by unsymmetrical surcharge on the Polluted soft soils. by comparing the analytical results and the actual measurements performed through the model test. Model tests were carried out as follows : soil tank, bearing frame and bearing plate are made for the test ; the water content in soil tank was kept constant while the contaminants in natural soils and polluted material were gradually increased ; unsymmetrical surcharge is increased at regular intervals and then the amounts of settlement, lateral displacement and upheaval are observed. In conclusion, the value of critical surcharge was expressed as $q_{ cr}= 2.78_{Cu}$ which was similar to those $Tschebotarioff(q_{cr}=3.0_{Cu)$ and $Meyerhof(q_{cr}=(B/2H+\pi/2_{Cu})$ had proposed. The value of ultimate capacity was expressed as $q_{ult}=4.84_{Cu}$ which was similar to that of Prandtl.

  • To effectively improve soft soils, it is necessary to perform ground behavior characteristics and stability management through measurement activities when embankment of structures on soft soils is conducted. However, there are many differences between the actual ground behavior and the initial design plan. To address this issue, this study analyzed the measured settlement in the Yeongam-Haenam areas using the Hyperbolic method to predict the settlement based on the measurement data. From the completion time of the embankment in the target area, the final settlement was predicted through the change in the degree of consolidation by the measurement period. Furthermore, the final settlement according to the change in degree of consolidation was compared and analyzed through finite element analysis and field measurement.

  • This paper presents the transport and removal of organic substances from the contaminated soft soils and sludges such as marine dredging waste, marine sediments, mine tailing waste, and sewage sludge by electroosmosis. A series of laboratory experiments including variable conditions such as contamination levels, solid contents, and applied voltage rates were peformed with the contaminated soft clay specimen mixed with organic substance. Investigated are specimen density, dewatering rate, outflow rate, and outflow concentration. The test results showed that organic substances in the soils were removed by applied voltages. The results indicated that this process can be used efficiently to clean up the contaminated soil.

  • When a sea-dike is constructed on soft soils, it is much difficult to calculate ground deformation caused by forced displacements. In this study , a series of laboratory model tests have been performed to investigate the ground deformation under a constructed sea-dike on soft soils. Construction sequence of sea-dike embankment was assumed such as constructed by quarry first and followed by soils adjacent to quarry embankment. as test data and displacement in subsoils have been analyzed, it seems that deformation is caused by general shear failure. the shape of ground deformation caused by forced displacements was well defined be parabola . Upon comparing profiles and depth of forced displacement from the model test to those based on stress-baring capacity method commonly used, it has been found that deformation prediction using stress-bearing capacity method was not exact at the edge of loading.

  • An experimental study is carried out to evaluate the performance of Lime mortar-Well graded Soil (Lime-WS) columns for the improvement of soft soils. Tests are conducted on a column of 100 mm diameter and 600 mm length surrounded by soft soil in different area ratios. Experiments are performed either with the entire area loading to evaluate the load - settlement behavior of treated grounds and only a column area loading to find the limiting axial stress of the column. A series of tests are carried out in soaking condition to investigate the influence of moisture content on the load - settlement behavior of specimens. In order to compare the behavior of Lime-WS columns with Conventional Stone (CS) columns as well as Geogrid Encased Stone (GES) columns, the behavior of these columns have been also considered in the present study. Remarkable improvement in the behavior of soft soil is observed due to the installation of Lime-WS columns and the performance of these columns is significantly enhanced by increasing the area ratio. The results show that CS columns are not suitable as a soil improvement technique for extremely soft soils and should be enhanced by encasing the column or replaced by rigid stone columns.
