Background: The purpose of this study is to purify uranium (U[VI])-contaminated soil-flushing effluent using the precipitation-distillation process for clearance. Precipitation and distillation are commonly used techniques for water treatment. We propose using a combination of these methods for the simple and effective removal of U(VI) ions from soil-flushing effluents. In addition, the U concentration (Bq/g) of solid waste generated in the proposed treatment process was analyzed to confirm whether it satisfies the clearance level. Materials and Methods: Uranium-contaminated soil was decontaminated by soil-flushing using 0.5 M sulfuric acid. The soil-flushing effluent was treated with sodium hydroxide powder to precipitate U(VI) ions, and the remaining U(VI) ions were removed by phosphate addition. The effluent from which U(VI) ions were removed was distilled for reuse as a soil-flushing eluent. Results and Discussion: The purification method using the precipitation-distillation process proposed in this study effectively removes U(VI) ions from U-contaminated soil-flushing effluent. In addition, most of the solid waste generated in the purification process satisfied the clearance level. Conclusion: The proposed purification process is considered to have potential as a soil-flushing effluent treatment method to reduce the amount of radioactive waste generated.

Electrodeposition of chromium from low concentration chromjum (III) sulfate complexess in aqueous using sodium formate-glycine mixtures as a complexing agent was studied. In the bath formation, it is found that the optimum again temperature and time for equilibration of the electrolytes are nrcessary for 24 hrs at 45$^{\circ}C$and the optimum elecrical charge for low current electrolysis which might be produced Cr(II) ions in the electrolytes is necessary for minum 2Ah/$\ell$. The optmun concentration off standard electrolyte for main composition is 0.05M chromium(III) sulfate, 0.2M sodium formate-0.2M glycine, and I mMNaSCN as a catalysea, respectivwly. The standard electrolyte is shows good covering, good throwing power, and 6% of current efficiency (Cr(III)basis). The oppearance of electrodeposits shows att active bright chromium. The SEM morphology of the chromjum coating is observed as smooth surfaces and dispersed micro prcro pores. X-ray diffraction analysis shows a bcc structure which the perferred orintation of the chromium electrodeposits is strongin(200)plane.

The objective of the present study was to assess the antipsychotic and antidiarrhoeal activities of ethanolic extract of roots of Rubia cordifolia in mice and rats. The antipsychotic activity of ethanolic extract of roots of Rubia cordifolia (ERC) was evaluated by observing its effect on amphetamineinduced stereotyped behavior in mice. Effect of ERC was also studied on motor coordination and locomotion in mice. The antidiarrhoeal activity was evaluated using castor oil-induced diarrhoea and excretion of sodium and potassium ions in the intestinal secretion in rats and gastrointestinal transit in mice. The ERC inhibited amphetamine-induced stereotyped behaviour, diminished locomotion and impaired motor coordination. ERC inhibited castor oil-induced diarrhoea, decreased both sodium and potassium excretion in the intestine and decreased gastrointestinal transit. Thus the present study confirms the anti-diarrhoeal activity of Rubia cordifolia. Further studies are necessary to evaluate the potential of Rubia cordifolia as an antipsychotic.
Polyelectrolyte complex based on two anionic polysaccharides, composed of sodium alginate and carrageenan, were prepared by interacting with divalent calcium ions in solution. The effects of annealing on the structural deformation of polyelectrolyte complex and on their characteristics at removing water from a methanol mixture from the point of molecular sieve were investigated and discussed. The result showed that the structural deformation of the annealed polyelectrolyte complex has an effect on the free volume between these polymer chains and the chelate segments such a shrinking of the overall morphology, which act as a molecular sieve in the separation of methanol and water mixtures.
This paper presents an experimental study of the sulfate resistance of mortars and pastes exposed to sodium sulfate solutions up to one year. In order to check deterioration modes due to sulfate attack, the sodium sulfate solution was varied at three concentration steps (3,380, 10,140 and 33,800 ppm of $SO_4^{2-}$ ions), and maintained at ambient temperature. The tests include a visual examination, expansion and compressive strength loss measurements as well as x-ray diffraction tests. The experimental data indicated that the use of cement with a low $C_3A$ content and low silicate ratio has a beneficial effect on the sulfate attack of mortars. In contrast, the mortars with a high $C_3A$ content and high silicate ratio became severely degraded due to the formation of ettringite, gypsum and/or thaumasite in the cement matrix.
Extracellular laccase secreted from Pleurotus ostreatus was activated by $Cu^{2+}$ and $Cu^{+}$ . The enzyme was strongly inactivated by 8-hydroxyquinoline, potassium cyanide, sodium azide, sodium bisulfite and 2-mercaptoethanol. The two ionogenic groups, which have pKa values of 5.60-5.70 and 6.70-6.85 respectively, were found to relate with the active site of this enzyme. The oxidation reactions were brought about by initial single electron transfer process on the active site. The enzyme was found to be a metalloprotein which had about 3.9 cupric ions per molecule of protein as a prosthetic group. The enzyme showed a strong peak at 605 nm and a weak shoulder at 330 nm in UV-Visible absorption spectrum. Both signals disappeated upon treatment of the enzyme with 4 electron equivalent ascorbate. These results indicate that type I Cu peak and type III Cu shoulder are present in laccase.
The reduction of a series of 1-substituted benzyl-3-cyanoquinolinium ions (p-$cH_3$, H, p-Br, m-F, p-CN) by sodium borohydride has been investigated. In all cases the products from these reactions were found to be 1, 2-dihydroquinolines over 82% yields. Rates of reduction were measured in basic condition and in solvent system consisting of 4 parts of isopropyl alcohol and 1 part of water by volume. Second order rate constants were obtained for these reactions. When the ratio of [$OH^-$] to [$BH_4^-$] becomes large the observed rate constants ($K_{obs}$) decrease by a small factor. Reaction scheme and rate law are discussed. Bronsted ${\alpha}(=\frac{d\;In\;k}{d\;In\;K})$ obtained by using the value of equilibrium constant K, which was obtained previously, was not 0. Instead, a value of 0.36 was obtained which indicated that the reduction by borohydride was structure-dependent according to the Marcus formalism even though the reaction rate was close to the diffusion limit.
The rejection of sodium chloride (NaCl) and calcium chloride (CaCl2) single salt solutions were carried out for commercial nanofiltration NFDK membrane. Results showed that the NFDK membrane had a negative surface charge and had a higher observed rejection of 93.65% for calcium (Ca2+) ion and 78.27% for sodium (Na+) ions. Prediction of rejection for aqueous solutions of both salts was made using Donnan Steric Pore Model based on Extended Nernst-Planck Equation in addition to concentration polarization film theory. A MATLAB program was developed to execute the model calculations. Absolute Average Relative Error (% AARE) was found below 5% for real rejection of the NFDK membrane. This research could be used successfully to assess the membrane characterization parameter using a proposed procedure which can reduce the number of experiments.
The effect of pH and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) micelle on the quenching of Ru(bpy)32+ luminescence by N-alkyl-4,4'-bipyridinium ions (RBPY+: R=methyl, octyl, dodecyl, benzyl) were investigated. In the absence of SDS, the quenching rate at pH 2 is similar to that of the corresponding methylalkyl viologens and much greater than that in pH 8 solution due to greater reducibility of the protonated form of RBPY+ (HRBPY2+). The quenching rate at pH 2 is strongly enhanced by the presence of SDS, while that at basic pH is greatly retarded. These observations are explained by deep embedment of RBPY+ into the hydrophobic hydrocarbon region of the micelle, whereas Ru(bpy)32+ and HRBPY2+ locate in the Stern layer of the micelle.
Ion flotation is an efficient method to remove metal ions from aqueous solution. In this work, ion flotation was applied to calcium removal from aqueous solution. The parameters used included sodium stearate (SS) and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) as collectors, 1-butanol and 1-propanol as frothers, pH, and air-flow rate. An L16 orthogonal array was chosen according to the mentioned factors and levels, and experimental tests were conducted according to the Taguchi orthogonal array. The results showed that all of the factors except one had significant effect on the flotation performance. The percentage contribution of parameters showed that type of frother and type of collector made the greatest (43.14%) and the lowest (9.86%) contribution, respectively. In optimal conditions, the recovery of Ca (II) ion was 45.67%. Also, the results illustrated that the Taguchi method could predict calcium removal from aqueous solution by ion flotation with 2.63%. This study showed that the use of ion flotation was an effective method for Ca (II) ion removal from aqueous solution.
