  • 65 samples of glass bead excavated from Mahan tombs of Asan Bakjimeure site consists of 13 of potash glass group and 52 of soda glass group and soda glass is superior in numbers. When classified according to color, purple blue glass bead is accompanied potash and soda glass group whereas purple glass bead is potash glass group and red, greenish blue, green and gold foil glass bead is soda glass group. Purple blue glass bead is classified as LCA type in which the content of the stabilizer is low. Of this, the soda glass categorized as LMK type with low content of MgO and $K_2O$ is determined that natron is used as the raw material. As to red glass, the homogeneous glass is LCA-B/HMK type and the heterogeneous glass is HCLA/LMK type. Thus, each of these two types are likely to be used plant ash and natron respectively. Greenish blue and green glass depends of the type that round glass is LCA-A/LMHK type and the segmented glass is LCA-B/HMK type. The gold foil glass bead is manufactured by the purity of 19.9~22.6K gold foil and the soda glass of HCLA/LMK type. In other words, the most of the glass bead of Asan Bakjimeure site is similar to the composition of the glass confirmed in other sites of the Baekche period. On the other hand, the greenish blue and green segmented bead and some red round bead is a different chemical composition is considered that the difference in raw materials. These characteristics is expected to be an important evidence for the understanding of the trade system of the ancient glass.

  • This paper sought to garner an understanding of Daegaya glass culture by observing the micro-structure and analyzing the chemical composition of 43 glass beads excavated from the No.73 and 74 ancient tombs in Jisan-dong, Goryeong, which are estimated to have a central age of 5th century CE. The visible characteristics and micro-structure of these artifacts were observed with a optical microscope and an scanning electron microscope, while their chemical composition was analyzed with an energy-dispersing spectrometer attached to the scanning electron microscope. As a result, the glass beads of Jisan-dong, Goryeong were identified to have been formed using various methods such as drawing, casting, and folding techniques, with the majority molded by the drawing technique. In terms of chemical composition, 32.6% were in the potash glass group and 67.4% in the soda glass group, with the latter divided into various fluxes such as high alumina glass, netron glass, and plant ash glass. Compared to Baekje's cultural region in the same age, the composition of these ancient glass artifacts demonstrates a high share of the potash glass group. This shows that, despite the shift from the potash glass group to the soda glass group in ancient Korean glass culture, glass composition differs from region to region or depending on the cultural sphere of influence. In the soda glass group, high-alumina glass comprised 23.3%, natron glass 43.0%, and plant ash glass was 1.2%. Among them, the main type of Korean soda glass is high-alumina glass, as natron glass and plant ash glass are known to have appeared later, but the results of scientific analysis of the glass beads excavated in Jisan-dong can be expected to provide important clues about the inflow and transformation of ancient glass on the Korean Peninsula. In the No. 73, 74, and 74-1 ancient tombs, which were found to have been built in chronological order by the excavation survey, the glass beads showed only slight variations depending on their production period. Nonetheless, the chemical composition of glass is deemed to have a close correlation to color.

  • The purpose of this study is to reveal the characteristics, correlations, and colorant materials of those using the chemical compositions of 30 glasses excavated from the Sarari hall of the Mireuksaji stone pagoda, and to determine the correlations between them and other glass excavated from the Wanggungri site. The results of the chemical analysis of the 11 glass beads show that they are a soda glass group with high contents of $SiO_2$ and $Na_2O$; these can be further subdivided into soda-alumina groups ($Na_2O-Al_2O_3-CaO-Si_2O$). The characteristics of the stabilizer are classified as being of the high alumina glass group (LCHA), except for two glasses. It was concluded that colorant materials affected the coloring for glass beads by various components including Ti, Mn, Fe, Cu and Pb. In addition, we examined six lead glasses which are glass plate and unknown fragments that are of a common lead glass system ($PbO-SiO_2$) with respect to the average contents of PbO (70wt.%) and $SiO_2$ (30wt.%). As a result of comparing these relics with those of the glass beads excavated by Wanggungri, there is a similarity in that they belong to the soda glass group. However, the contents of $Na_2O$ are relatively higher than that of the glass beads in the Mireuksaji pagoda, and most of relics include glasses with a low content of $K_2O$ and CaO. In addition, the PbO and $SiO_2$ contents are slightly different in the lead glass. It seems that the glass relics made at two different sites may have used different raw materials or techniques.

  • Microtexture and components of 7 glass bead fragments excavated from Andong tumulus in Gildu-ri, Goheung have been analyzed to determine the characteristics of their weathered condition as well as chemical compositions. Firstly, status of microtexture shows that there is a large quantity of pollutants which were presumably transferred from the buried environment into the surface and the gap of the cracks. The examination has displayed that there are less amount of alkali metal components such as sodium (Na) and potasium (K) in the gap of the cracks than on the surface. The chemical compositions analysis has confirmed that two samples belongs to potash glass group ($K_2O-SiO_2$), four to soda glass group ($Na_2O-SiO_2$), and one to the mixed alkali glass group. Chromophoric elements of the glass varies by different colours: blue and navy are cobalt (Co); greenish blue is copper (Cu) and iron (Fe); and light brown is Fe respectively. Such kind of scientific analysis of the excavated glass beads will contribute to the understanding of interchange between various local cultures and arts within the southwest region of Korean Peninsula during the 4th and the 5th centuries.

  • Materials processing by ultrashort pulsed laser is actively being applied to micromachining technology due to its advantages with regard to non-thermal machining. In this study, materials processing with ultrashort pulses was studied by using the high repetition rate of a 800 nm Ti:sapphire regenerative amplifier. This revealed that the highly precise micromachining of metallic thin film and bulk glass with a minimal heat affected zone (HAZ) could be obtained by using near damage threshold energy. Grooves with diffraction limited sub-micrometer width were obtained with widths of 620 nm on Cr thin film and 800 nm on a soda-lime glass substrate. The machined patterns were investigated through SEM images. We also phenomenologically examined the influence of variations of parameters and proposed the optimal process conditions for microfabrication.

  • It is characterized and classified as the type of red brown glass beads to compare the chemical composition and manufacturing technique on the 141 samples in 12 sites of the Three Kingdom Period analyzed until now. It can be divided into three types according to the chemical composition of stabilizers(CaO & $Al_2O_3$) and soda raw materials(MgO & $K_2O$) on the red brown glass beads except one sample. Type I of high alumina glass is identified as the most common types that is 78.6 % of the distribution ratio at analytical samples and is excavated the most from ruin sites. In contrast, type II, 13.6 % of distribution ratio at analytical samples, is about 5 % CaO and $Al_2O_3$, MgO and $K_2O$ at around 1.5 % is similar to the composition of plant ash glass. Type III is that the content of CaO is higher than $Al_2O_3$ and the content of MgO and $K_2O$ is below 1.5 %. It is the same as the composition of natron glass and its share is the lowest as 7.9 %. Of these, type III is divided into two types according to the content of MgO and $K_2O$. It is identified that manufacturing technique of type I and II is drawing and type III is casting method with microscopic investigations. Type II and III is estimated that raw materials is different because is confirmed in the majority of ruins in spite of the fact that distribution ratio is very low. So, red brown glass beads distributed in Korea Peninsula are divided into three types of glass culture.

  • This study revealed the material composition and characteristics of 19 glass fragments excavated from stone chamber No. 1 of Jeongchon Tomb in Naju through chemical composition analyses and observations. These characteristics were compared with the characteristics of the glass fragments excavated from No. 3 tomb of Bogam-ri in Naju. The purpose of this study was to identify the characteristics of the ancient glass of the Mahan-Baekje period. The glass fragments excavated from the Jeongchon Tombs can be classified into purplish blue, light-purplish blue, greenish blue, green, and mixture of purple blue and purple, based on their color. These beads were made using a drawn and casting technique. In addition, blue glass fragments were primarily excavated form No. 3 tomb of Bogam-ri. However, red glass fragments were not excavated from either of the tombs. According to chemical composition analyses, soda glass group and potash glass group were common in both the tombs. Additionally, alkali mixed glass group and lead barium glass group were excavated from Jeongchon Tombs and No. 3 tomb of Bogam-ri, respectively. The glass fragments excavated from No. 3 tomb of Bogam-ri have more color variations than those excavated from Jeongchon Tombs.

  • MgO thin films were deposited on soda lime glass substrates by rf magnetron sputtering using a MgO target at various oxygen flow ratios in order to probe the relationship between MgO film properties and discharge characteristics. MgO films have a tendency to form microstructures with a preferred growth orientation of (200) with increasing oxygen flo ration up to 0.1 $O_2$/(Ar+$O_2$). MgO film obtained at 0.1[$O_2$/(Ar+$O_2$)] was found to be fully stoichiometric. The stoichiometric MgO film was observed to have relatively very clean surface and grains of large size and contain almost no hydroxyl group. The AC PDP with fully stoichiometric MgO film showed lower firing and sustain voltages than those with magnesium-rich or oxygen-rich MgO films, being largely attributed to the larger grain size and the minimized hydroxyl group.

  • The observation and analysis results of 9 glass bead samples collected from Oc Eo site in Vietnam, an outport of the ancient port city Funan in East Asia, are as follows. The type of glass beads is round, the colors are reddish brown, greenish blue, green, black and purplish blue, and the chemical composition is soda glass group. This means that they are similar in type, color and chemical compositions to glass beads from the ancient Korean peninsula. There are limitations in data because the glass beads are not from excavation investigation but from earth surface investigation. But it is significant that similar making technique and chemical composition are being observed in both the glass beads from Oc Eo and those of Korea. According to "Nihon Shoki" Kinmeiki, Baekje king sent Funan's goods and 2 slaves to Japan in 543. It is clear that there were direct or indirect exchanges between Baekje and Funan. The possibility has grown that glass beads could be included among goods.
