  • The childbearing process is not only a biological phenomenon of a woman who gives birth to a child but also a sociocultural phenomenon which is reflected on her value, belief in the sociocultural context according to social change and acculturation. The familial relation and sociocultural context in the multigravidas are more complex and intermingled than in the primigravidas. The purpose of this ethnographic research study was to explore the experience of identity from the first trimester of pregnancy to the third trimester of pregnancy in the Korean multigravidas and to understand deeply the perspectives of pregnant women reflected on Korean sociocultural values, beliefs, norms and familial culture. The participants of 10 pregnant women in Seoul, Korea were observed for 10 months from January to October 2000 and interviewed in their homes and comfortable place. Data analysis was accomplished 'line by line method' and significant concepts were classified according to themes, categories, and domains. The results of this study were as follows : The participants experienced 4 categorized subjects : understanding the oneself - mother to be, performing the dual role, drifting the emotion, and living disheartened during pregnancy. The participants were showed universality and diversity pattern in the self understanding process. The universal pattern were 'mother to be' showing maturation, life along family and priority on motherhood between being a mother and a woman. The diverse pattern were taking the dual role in working mothers having the higher self actualized value and personal identity rather than maternal identity, drifting emotion in resigned mothers, and living disheartened in mothers who have two daughters and no son. In conclusion, the Korean multigravidas experienced womanhood as well as motherhood through the self understanding process with familial connections during pregnancy. Therefore it is suggested that if the harmony and the balance between a mother and a woman is accomplished, the woman will lead a healthy and high quality of life. Also, this study sought to confirm the sociocultural factors affecting during pregnancy in the perspectives of the women with children. Therefore, the health care providers have to divert their attention from biomedical perspectives to biocultural perspectives integrating bio-psycho-sociocultural aspects of pregnant women in a clinical setting.

In-depth interviews with a total of seven Vietnamese immigrant women were analyzed by the phenomenological method of A. Giorgi(1997). A total of 127 meaning units and 7 themes with 17 sub-themes, which rendered central meanings that indicated situational structures, were derived. The statements of situational structures were re-categorized in accordance with the sociocultural context of their native country. As the socioeconomic aspect, "aspiration for new opportunities and a new world" and "disappointment and frustration" were derived. The aspect of familial value and culture involved "conflicts over the unilateral acceptance of differences" and "building social relationships". The aspect of female status was associated with "conflicts due to patriarchal hierarchy". The aspect of child caring involved "education as a symbolic value" and the "double-sidedness of mother identity strategy". The gist of Vietnamese immigrant women's adaptation experiences is "to grow into a subjective mother despite conflicts due to the disappointment and frustration behind aspirations".

This study is based on 5,923 Singaporean eighth grade students who participated in TIMSS 2011 assessment. The study found that there were no statistically significant gender differences in 'parental involvement in education' and 'teacher efficacy.' There were no statistically significant gender differences in students' attitudes of 'like learning mathematics,' and 'value learning mathematics'. A significant gender difference was identified for the attitude of 'confident with mathematics.' The boys displayed a higher level of confidence in mathematics than the girls consistent with other study findings for Asian students. The degree of effect from 'parental involvement in education,' 'teacher efficacy,' and 'confident with mathematics' on mathematics achievement are found to be stronger for girls than boys. The finding implies that girls' mathematics achievement can benefit from having more positive encouragement and involvement of parents and teachers and strengthening confidence in mathematics.

  • With much changes in men's appearance style to pursue, beauty care activities, and pursuing value, it has been required to have researches on it. This study analyzed men's acceptance of information about beauty care and also the characteristics of each pursuing value. An online survey was conducted targeting about 500 male office workers in Seoul. In the results of the study, the pursuit of the practical value of five beauty care activities was the highest while the aesthetic value was very differently shown in accordance with the types of beauty care activities, compared to two other values. Contrary to other styles, especially, the acceptance of the skin care style was influenced by the sociocultural value, practical value, and aesthetic value. Especially, the passivity of the aesthetic value and the emphasis on the practical and sociocultural values were shown. The hair care was influenced by the practical value while the plastic surgery was influenced by the aesthetic value. In the care style area, the acceptance of skin care was only influenced by the pursuit of complex values. Regarding the marketing of each care style, the large-scale marketing campaign would be effective for the hair care while it would be necessary to seek for more aesthetic campaigns for the plastic surgery business.
