Studies on Distribution of Toxic Element in Commercial Plywood treated with CCA Preservative by the Soaking Method (침지법(浸漬法)에 의한 CCA처리합판(處理合板)의 약제분포(藥劑分布)에 관한 연구(硏究))

  • The purposes of this study were, first, to investigate retention levels of toxic elements and oxide individual plies for each panel and, second, to examine disproportioning of individual toxic elements Thirty five water gum plywood panels were treated with a copper-chromium-arsenic preservative (CCA) by the soaking process as the treament time were applied. Such individual plies at a distance of 2.5cm, 7.5cm from the edge were assayed for CuO, $CrO_3$, and $As_2O_5$ on the basis of copper, chromium and arsenic content by Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry. In these experiments, 12mm thickness plywood panels made of water gum, which were selling, were selected for the preservative treatment. Treating solutions were prepared for 10%, dilute solution of copper-chromium-arsenic preservative and then 1, 3, 6, 12 and 24 hours soaking trements in CCA preservative were applied. The results obtained are as follows: 1. The retention of total oxide in the face and back plies (1+7) retained more than the retention of total oxide in the other plies. The total oxide retention for the individual plies except the face and back plies (1+7) was showed in the following orders; cross plies (3+5), cross plies (2+6), core ply (4). 2. The retentions of total oxide increased as the increase of treatment time. The CCA treated plywood retained high levels of total oxide retention in the face and back plies (1+7). 3. All the retentions in the face and back plies (1+7) is over 5Kg/$m^3$, New Zealand Timber Preservation Standards Specification, and after 6 hours, the retentions in the cross plies (3+5) is over 4. The relative penetration of copper, chromium, and arsenic were not affected by the treatment time. The proportion of arsenic decreased in relation to both copper and chromium and the proportion of copper increased in relation to both chromium and arsenic. 5. A disproportioning of copper, chromium occurred with longer distance from edge, and with longer distance from edge the leachability resistance of CCA treated specimens decreased. After 6 hours (soaking time), the proportion of active elements at a distance of 2.5cm from the edge was consistent. And after 24 hours-soaking, the proportion of active elements at a distance of 7.5cm from the edge was consistent.

Manufacture and Properties of Gypsum-Wood (Gypsum-Wood의 제조와 성질)

  • Gypsum-wood composites were made by introducing inorganic substances into wood using calcium chloride, first treating solution, and sodium sulfate, secondary treating solution, by double diffusion process under atmospheric pressure at room temperature. The process conducted as follows: water saturated specimens were soaked in calcium chloride solutions at several concentration. Then the specimens were soaked further in saturated sodium sulfate solution, and they were leached in flowing tap water for 24h. To attain sufficient weight percent gain (WPG) values, the suitable concentration of calcium chloride and soaking time in saturated sodium sulfate solution were 20% and 48h, respectively. Inorganic substances were produced mainly in the lumina of tracheides. It was made sure that these substances were dihydrate gypsum($CaSO_4$ $2H_2O$) by X -ray microanalysis (SEM-EDX). The composites had good fire resistance due to low heat transfer rate of gypsum formed in wood. However, the composites had little decay resistances, because they showed high weight losses by test fungi attacks.

Penetration of Some Humectants into Shark Muscle (상어육(肉)중의 수분유지제(水分維持劑) 침투(浸透))

  • Estimation of the penetration rate of humectants has been considered to be important in effective control of food processing when intermediate moisture food is manufactured by the moist-infusion method. In this study, when shark (Isurus glaucus) muscle was soaked in four common humectants (sucrose, sorbitol, glycerol, and propylene glycol), the equation of their penetration rate was drawn as a function of time using high performance liquid chromatography analysis. Penetration rates increased with soaking temperatures and decreased inversely with molecular weights of humectants. The penetrated amounts for 10% humectant solution reached about equilibrium after soaking for 10 hours and for 30% humectant after soaking for about 7 hours. In consideration with the penetration rate of the sample soaked in 10% humectant and complex solution of each 10% humectant, little difference was found between them. When the sample was soaked in 10% humectant and 30% humectant, it seemed to be able to apply the following regression equation to estimate the penetrated amounts: M = a log (c.t)+ b where M = penetrated amounts; c = concentration of humectant; t= soaking time; a, b = constant and c.t should be within $10^3\;-\;4{\times}10^4$.

Quality Properites of Legumes subjected to Salt Solution and Microwave Heating (가염침지 및 마이크로파 처리 두태류의 품질특성)

  • Quality properties of legumes (Seoritae and red bean) with soaking of 3% NaCl solution and microwave dying were evaluated. The samples were soaking with 3% NaCl at $25^{\circ}C$ for 6 hr(Seoritae) and 12 hr(red bean). Moisture content of Seoritae and red bean after soaking are 35.8%, and 35.1% respectively. The samples were dried with microwave treatment and cooling with microwave treatment combination secondly to $12{\sim}14%$ for moisture content Hardness of Seoritae was decreased from $12,863g_f$ to $3,309g_f$. There was a difference between varieties on color value. Hardness of cooked rice with ratio of milled rice and legumes(7:3) was $3,165g_f$ which is lower value compared to regular cooked mixed rice. Sensory evaluation of cooked mixed rice showed that treated samples have higher scores on color, flavor, taste, texture and overall acceptability values than those of control.

Effect of Soluble Salts and Their Concentrations on Water Absorption of Polyacrylamide Hydrogel (무기염의 종류 및 농도가 Polyacrylamide 고흡수성 수지의 수분 흡수에 미치는 영향)

  • This research was conducted to determine the amount of water absorbed by a polyacrylamide hydrogel such as Stocksorb C (STSB), effect of salts on inhibition in hydration of STSB, and the hydrogel effects on changes of nutrient concentration in external solution. Absorption of deionized water by STSB reached a maximum of 180 $mL{\cdot}g^{-1}$. Monovalent soluble salts such as $KH_2PO_4,\;KNO_3$, and $(NH_4)_2SO_4$ reduced absorption of the hydrogel, but the degrees of inhibition in absorption were similar in three kinds of salts. Twenty milliequivalents per liter of $Ca_{2+}\;or\;Mg_{2+}$ reduced water absorption of STSB to $14\%$ compared to those of deionized water. Solution absorption was consistently lower in the presence of divalent cations than in the presence of the monovalent cations. But the absorption was unaffected by the uncharged salt such as urea in all concentrations tested. The final $K^+\;and\;NH_4^+-N$ concentrations of the solution remaining after absorption by STSB was higher than those of the initial solution. The soaking of STSB to full strength of Hoagland solution resulted in increase of $NO_3^--N,\;H_2PO_4^-\;and\;SO_4^{2-}$ concentrations in external solution compared to initial solution, reaching 5,300, 250 and 1,500 $mL{\cdot}g^{-1}$, respectively, at 24 hrs after soaking.

Production of Silver Impregnated Bamboo Activated Carbon and Reactivity with NO Gases (은첨착 대나무 활성탄의 제조와 NO 가스 반응 특성)

  • The Ag-impregnated activated carbon was produced from bamboo activated carbon by soaking method of silver nitrate solution. The carbonization and activation of raw material was conducted at $900^{\circ}C$. Soaking conditions are the variation of silver nitrate solution concentration (0.002~0.1 mol/L) and soaking time (maximum 24 h). The specific surface area and pore size distribution of the prepared activated carbons were measured. Also, NO and activated carbon reaction were conducted in a thermogravimetric analyzer in order to use for de-NOx agents of used activated carbon. Carbon-NO reactions were carried out with respect to reaction temperature ($20{\sim}850^{\circ}C$) and NO gas partial pressure (0.1~1.8 kPa). As results, Ag amounts are saturated within 2h, Ag amounts increased 1.95 mg Ag/g (0.2%)~ 88.70 mg Ag/g (8.87%) with the concentration of silver nitrate solution in the range of 0.002~0.1 mol/L. The specific volume and surface area of bamboo activated carbon of impregnated with 0.2% silver were maximum, but decreased with increasing Ag amounts of activated carbon due to pore blocking. In NO reaction, the reaction rate of impregnated bamboo activated carbon was retarded as compare with that of bamboo activated carbon. Measured reaction orders of NO concentration and activation energy were 0.63[BA], 0.69l[BA(Ag)] and 80.5 kJ/mol[BA], 66.4 kJ/mol[BA(Ag)], respectively.

Quality improvement of high temperature-heated shrimp via pretreatment (전처리 방법에 따른 고온 가열 새우의 품질 향상)

  • In order to prevent the blackening and texture softening of heated shrimp, the pH was adjusted by soaking shrimps in acidic and alkali solutions, and their qualities were evaluated. The lightness of shrimps pretreated with 0.2% (w/w) citric acid and 0.05% (w/w) ascorbic acid solution increased by 20% compared to that of the control. The strength of mechanical hardness of shrimps soaked in acetic acid and phosphate solution (pH 6.0) was significantly higher ($1209g_f$) compared to that of untreated shrimp ($801g_f$; p<0.05), and the overall preference of texture was 0.4 points higher than that of the control in the descriptive sensory evaluation (p<0.05). In contrast, soaking in solution of pH 8 exhibited a weak texture hardening effect ($855g_f$). Additionally, the hardness of the heated shrimp after soaking at an adjusted pH of 4.0 increased to $4046g_f$, but the yield based on weight decreased to 38% compared to that of untreated shrimp (70%; p<0.05).

  • One of the major objectives in the developments of a progesterone I.U.D. is to prepare devices which release drug at a constant rate for extended periods. A constant release rate is achived by maintaining drug concentration at a constant valve via the introduction of rate limiting membrane to solute diffusion at the surface of the devices. In this study, progesterone dispersed at monolithic device were prepared from polyhydroxy ethyl methacrylate. Constant release rate were obtained with device which were soaked in on ethanol-hexan solution. The release rate was dependant upon the concentration of the ethanolic solution in the soaking solution. This devices offer significant potential for futher development of hydrogel in the intrauterine contraception device for controlled release of progesterone.

A Study of Dewatering Phenomena of Potato Slice Cytorrhysed by High Molecules (고분자 용액의 세포 압착 현상에 의한 감자 절편의 탈수 현상에 관한 연구)

  • To study simultaneous water and solute transport kinetics during soaking in concentrated solution, the influence of the concentration and molecular weight of the solute(polyethylene glycol(PEG) and NaCl) in the soaking solution and the temperature on the water loss and solute gain rates were observed by using a model vegetable tissue(potato). When potato slices$(4cm{\times}4cm{\times}0.1cm)$ soaked in 60% PEG solutions, the water loss rate of the early phase decreased with increasing of the molecular weight of PEG from 200 to 6,000, while the final water loss increased with increasing the molecular weight of PEG and it reached to 80%. The cell wall of potato tissue was permeable to NaCl and PEGs of which average molecular weight is smaller than 400 but it was not permeable to PEG 600 and larger molecules. PEG which has average molecular weight below 600 induced plasmolysis and those above 600 induced cytorrhysis. The water loss rate of potato sample soaked in smaller molecular weight PEG solution was faster than those soaked in higher molecular weight PEG solution before cytorrhysis happened. The water loss rate was reversed after cytorrhysis happened. The volume change of potato within the first 60 minutes was larger in low molecular PEG solution but the final ratio of decreasing volume was larger in high molecular PEG solutions. In PEG 200 solution, the potato tissue was slightly shrinked without shape change. However, in PEG 4,000 solution, volume of potato was reduced significantly and potato tissue was twisted.

Effect of Osmopriming on Rice Seed Germination in Low Temperature (저온에서 볍씨 발아에 미치는 삼투처리 효과)

  • To improve the germination performance of rice seeds under suboptimal temperature, osmopriming with PEG-6000 was examined. Optimal PEG-6000 concentration to improve germination was 20% PEG-6000 solution, and rice cultivars used in this experiment were Sinunbongbyeo, Gancheokbyeo, Dongjinbyeo. The water content of seeds after soaking for 60 hours in the PEG solution is similar to that of seeds after soaking for 24 hours in the distilled water. Germination performance of the soaked seeds in the PEG solution was higher than that of the soaked seeds in the distilled water or the control, especially under suboptimal temperatures. Electrical conductivity of the soaked seeds in the PEG solution was lower than that of the soaked seeds in the distilled water or the control, and total dehydrogenase activity of the soaked seeds in the PEG solution was higher than that of the soaked seeds in the distilled water or the control. SDS-PAGE results of soluble protein from the embryos of seeds primed differently showed darker band in the seeds soaked in the PEG solution than the seeds soaked in the distilled water or the control at the 68 KD region. Also, band patterns of peroxidase and esterase of embryos soaked in the PEG solution were darked than that of embryos soaked in the distilled water or the control at the Rf 0.94 and Rf 0.87, respectively.
