Direct numerical simulation of a fully developed turbulent plane Couette-Poiseuille flow with a two-dimensional (2-D) rod-roughened wall is performed to investigate the impacts of the surface roughness. It is shown that the logarithmic region in the mean velocity profile over the rough wall Couette-Poiseuille flow is significantly shortened by the surface roughness compared to that over a turbulent Couette-Poiseuille flow with smooth wall. The Reynolds shear stress over the rough wall Couette-Poiseuille flow is decreased compared to that for a smooth case in the outer layer. These results are attributed to weakened turbulence activity or roll-cell mode over the rough wall Couette-Poiseuille flow near the channel centerline due to suppressed development of u'-structure on the top wall, as documented through spanwise energy spectra of the streamwise velocity fluctuations. Inspection of congregation motion near the bottom wall and time evolution of u'-structure reveal weakened co-supporting cycle for the rough wall case.

A three-dimensional multi-phase flow is simulated around a smooth tire. This simulation is conducted by solving Navier-Stokes equation with a k-$\varepsilon$ turbulent model. The numerical calculations are carried out by modeling a multi-phase free surface flow mixed with air and water at the inlet. The numerical solutions show an intuitively resonable behavior of water around a moving tire. The calculated pressure around the tire surface along the moving direction is presented. The moving velocities of the tire are chosen to be 30, 40, 60, and 70 km/h. The numerically simulated pressures around the tire are compared with existing experimental data. The comparison shows a new possible tool of analyzing a hydroplaning phenomenon for an automobile tire by means of a computational fluid dynamics.

The flow characteristics of a two-dimensional offset jet issuing parallel to a rough wall is experimentally investigated by using a split film probe with the modified Stock's calibration method. The mean velocity and turbulent stresses profiles in the up and down-stream locations of the wall-attachment regions are measured and compared with those of the smooth wall attaching offset jet cases. It is found that the wall-attachment region on the rough wall is wider than on the smooth wall for the same offset height and the jet speed. The position of the maximum velocity point is farther away from the wall than that for the smooth wall case because of the thick wall boundary layer established by the surface roughness. It is concluded that the roughness of the wall accelerates the relaxation process to a redeveloped plane wall jet and produces a quite different turbulent diffusion behavior especially near the wall from comparing with the smooth plane wall jet turbulence.

An experiment has been carried out to investigate the aerodynamic effect of surface roughness on the characteristics of the turbulent separation and reattaching flow downstream of a backward-facing step. The distributions of boundary layer parameters, forward-flow fraction and turbulent stresses in the region near the reattachment point are measured with a split film sensor. It is demonstrated that the streamwise distributions of the forward-flow fraction in the recirculation and reattachment regions are similar, independent of the roughness. The reattachment length is found to be only weakly affected by the roughness. It is also shown that the velocity profile on the rough surface approaches to that of the equilibrium turbulent boundary layer faster than that on the smooth surface in the redeveloping region after reattachment.
Direct numerical simulation (DNS) dataset of a turbulent boundary layer (TBL) with a step change from smooth to rough surface is analyzed to examine spatially developing flow characteristics. The roughness elements are periodically arranged two-dimensional (2-D) spanwise rods with a streamwise pitch of ${\lambda}=8k$ ($=12{\theta}_{in}$), and the roughness height is $k=15{\theta}_{in}$, where ${\theta}_{in}$ is the inlet momentum thickness. The step change is introduced $80{\theta}_{in}$ downstream from the inlet. For the first time, full images from the DNS data with the step change from the smooth to rough walls is present to get some idea of the geometry of turbulent coherent structures over rough wall, especially focusing on their existence and partial dynamics over the rough wall. The results show predominance of hairpin vortices over the rough wall and their spanwise scale growth mechanism by merging.
The velocity of the inner region of turbulent flow on a smooth bed has complex profile which can not be described with a simple formula. Though there have been a couple of formulas describing the profile, most of them have very complex forms, i.e., with many terms, with integration form, or with implicit forms. It means that it is hard to use them or it is difficult to estimate their parameters. A new single formula that describes the velocity profile of the inner region of the turbulent flow on a smooth bed was proposed. This formula has a form of the traditional log-law multiplied by a damping function. Introducing only one additional parameter, it can describe the whole inner range nicely. It approximates the law-of-the-wall in the vicinity of the bed and approaches to the log-law in the overlap region. The added parameter, damping factor, can be estimated very easily. It is not sensitive to the Reynolds number change and the velocity profile calculated by the formula does not change much due to the change of the parameter.
Turbulent boundary-layer over a micro-riblet film(MRF) was investigated experimentally. The MRF has sharp V-shaped micro scale grooves of $300{\mu}m$ in width and $176.8{\mu}m$ in height. Particle image velocimetry(PIV) system was employed to measure velocity fields of flow over the MRF coated plate. Flow over a smooth plate was also measured for comparison. The PIV measurements were taken in the streamwise wall-normal planes at Re$\theta$= 985 and 2342. Vortex structures of the flow were analyzed by extracting the swirling strength as an unambiguous vortex-identification criterion. As a result the number of spanwise vortices with clockwise(negative) rotation decreases rapidly in the near-wall region(y<0.2h), but decreases slowly in the outer region(0.2h
The present paper discusses the traditional empirical equations of friction factor or cross-sectional mean velocity of open channel flow and suggests the new form of friction factor equation. Dimensional analysis is conducted for the possible forms of traditional empirical equations in order to satisfy the dimensional equality, and new forms of empirical equations are presented with introducing equivalent roughness height. Considering the distribution of friction factor against Reynolds number which has a similar characteristics to that of smooth turbulent flow in circular pipe, the friction factor equation of rectangular open channel flow is developed by modifying the friction factor equation of circular pipe flow for the region of smooth turbulent flow. The equations including the dimensionally-corrected empirical equations are tested against Bazin's laboratory experiments.

The structure of turbulence of fully developed flow through three concentric annuli with both rough inner and outer walls was investigated experimentally for Reynolds number range Re=15000-93000. Turbulence intensities were measured in three (u, v, w) directions, and turbulence shear stresses in annuli of radius ratios .alpha.= 0.26, 0.4 and 0.56, respectively. The result showed that the structure of turbulence for these asymmetric flows was not the same as that for the annulus with smooth walls. The velocity fluctuations of all three components (u, v, and w-directions) showed little discernible variation with Reynolds numbers, but became apparent with the influence of radius ratio (.alpha.) The experimental results for an annulus with the roughened outer wall and a smooth annulus were shown in the figures as a reference. The eddy diffusivities and friction factors were also presented and discussed.

Laminar and turbulent boundary layers on a rotating sector and a helical blade are calculated by differential method. The estimation of three dimensional viscous flows provide quite useful informations for the design of propellers and turbo-machinery. A general method of calculation is presented in this paper. Calculated laminar boundary layer on a sector shows smooth development of flows from Blasius' solution at the leading edge to von Karman's solution of a rotating disk at the down-stream. Eddy viscosity model is adopted for the calculation of turbulent flows. Turbulent flows on a rotating blade show similar characters as laminar flows. But cross-flow angle of turbulent flows are reduced in comparison with laminar boundary layers. Effects of rotation make flow structures significantly different from two-dimensional flows. In the range of Reynolds number of model scale propellers, large portion of the blade are still in the transition region from laminar to turbulent flows. Therefore viscous flow pattern might be quite different on the blade of model propeller. The present method of calculation is to be useful for the research of scale effects, cavitation, and roughness effects of propeller blades.
