  • This study was conducted to assess the needs of smartphone application development for self care performance of 374 patients with chronic hepatitis B. The mean age of the subjects was 46.2 years. The patients obtained information about chronic hepatitis B from the internet (41.3%), nurses or doctors (23.8%), television (15.6%), and smartphones (6.2%). The reason that the information about hepatitis B didn't come from a smartphone were 'Lack of useful applications' (75.9%), 'Could not believe the information' (15.0). If the application is developed, subjects replied 'Frequently use' (59.9%), 'When needed' (33.2%). The desired contents were 'Knowledge of disease' (27.1%), 'Drug calender' (16.8%), 'Reference of information' (15.5%), 'Record of lab data' (14.6%). Ability to use the smartphone, depended on age and level of education, however the needs for the development of the smartphone application, there were not differences. Also, there were different desired contents of application, depended on age and level of education. Therefore, when developing smartphone applications for self care performance of chronic hepatitis B patients considering educational level and age, it could be widely utilized as a tool which can help to the self care performance of chronic hepatitis B patients.

  • This study examined the satisfaction difference in the aspects of awareness, information quality, and availability in healthcare applications according to smartphone user's characteristics. Data collection was conducted between September 17th and September 21st 2014 on the 193 people who had used healthcare applications, and the data collected were analyzed with descriptive statistics, t-test, One-way ANOVA, and Kruskal-Wallis test using SPSS WIN 20.0. Differences in satisfaction of healthcare application were observed according to the general characteristics, and according to age, education level, and income, as well as for healthcare application use characteristics, according to operation system, total use period, the number of installed healthcare applications, the sources of main information, use frequency, and reasons of no use. To establish strategies for the effective spread of mobile healthcare and development and distribution of healthcare applications, it will be necessary to confirm smartphone users' characteristics and it is important to reflect them in the strategies. In addition, it is necessary to develop and implement a range of strategies to ceaselessly induce the users' motives of use and to improve their degree of satisfaction to secure the constant use of developed health care applications.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the self-awareness of smartphone dependence among undergraduate students and their response to the same. The data was drawn from a survey on smartphone overdependence conducted by the Ministry of Science and information and communications technology (ICT) and the National Information Society Agency in 2017. The responses of 1,735 undergraduate students were analyzed by frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, minimum-maximum value, 2-test, independent t-test, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and stepwise multiple regression analysis. The results indicated that 22.3% of participants were at risk of smartphone dependence, and 63.6% of them were unaware of their dependence on smartphones. The perception of smartphone dependence was significantly associated with a higher risk of smartphone dependence (=.35, p=.000) and the increasing use of applications such as games (=.19, p=.000), television/video (=.11, p=.000), and learning (=.11, p=.000). Of the participants with dependence awareness, only a few knew about the existence of centers to prevent smartphone and internet dependence. Moreover, they rarely utilized these centers. However, the participants felt the need for more counseling agencies (26.8%), programs for dealing with oneself (23.2%), information about smartphone dependence (14.9%), and help to overcome dependence (10.9%). These findings show the need to establish public services so that students can easily access correct information on smartphone dependence and address this problem.

  • This study aims to investigate the influence of undergraduate students' personal characteristics on the use behaviors of library mobiles and its contents. We used gender, major, grade, university, perceived usefulness, personal innovativeness, and smartphone dependency variables to measure their personal characteristics. We conducted a survey with 309 undergraduate students who belong to two universities. The results showed that the major, grade, perceived usefulness, and innovativeness variables significantly influenced the use frequency of library mobiles, while the gender, major, university, and smartphone dependency ones did the use pattern of library mobile contents. Based on the results, we proposed three methods for constructing an efficient university library mobile.

  • Image-oriented information is becoming increasingly important on social networking services (SNS); the background of this trend is the popularity of selfies. Currently, camera applications using augmented reality (AR) and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies are gaining traction. An AR camera app is a smartphone application that converts selfies into various interesting forms using filters. In this study, we investigated the change of keywords according to the time flow of selfies in Goolgle News articles through semantic network analysis. Additionally, we examined the effects of using an AR camera app on appearance satisfaction and self-esteem when taking a selfie. Semantic network analysis revealed that in 2013, postings of specific people were the most prominent selfie-related keywords. In 2019, keywords appeared regarding the launch of a new smartphone with a rear-facing camera for selfies; in 2020, keywords related to communication through selfies appeared. As a result of examining the effect of the degree of use of the AR camera app on appearance satisfaction, it was found that the higher the degree of use, the higher the user's interest in appearance. As a result of examining the effect of the degree of use of the AR camera app on self-esteem, it was found that the higher the degree of use, the higher the user's negative self-esteem.

  • This paper examines the diffusion of smartphones with a special emphasis on the diffusive interactions between Apple iOS and Google Android in a global context. Since the two mobile platforms were first introduced in the market, the use of smartphones has skyrocketed, suggesting that the dramatic diffusion of smartphones may be explained in part by the growth and competition of these two platforms. To study this, an extended Bass model is applied to a data set of quarterly smartphone sales between 2008 and 2013 for 15 countries. Our findings suggest that the innovation effect was more salient for iOS than for Android in developed countries, whereas the imitation effect was more striking for Android than for iOS in developing countries. Furthermore, our results from the co-diffusion model suggest that the diffusion of Android negatively affected by the diffusion of iOS, but not vice versa.

  • Construal level theory (CLT) have been researched in wide range of disciplines such as marketing, organizational study, psychology, or education. Current study asserts that CLT would explain the effect of different devices of PC and smartphone on interaction between human-computer interfaces and information systems use. In CLT, those who are far from an object in terms of physical, temporal, social or psychological distance, they construe their understanding as abstract (high level) and vice versa. We hypothesized different size of digital device will increase psychological distance and result in behaviors that correspond to present construal level. The analysis result shows that users of PC recognized that they are socially distant from the device and those of smartphone felt that they are socially close to the device. However, the device did not have significant effect on attention to essential information, advertisement preference, and immediacy. The implication to academia, practice and future research and limitations are also discussed.

  • Human activity recognition (HAR) is a technology that aims to offer an automatic recognition of what a person is doing with respect to their body motion and gestures. HAR is essential in many applications such as human-computer interaction, health care, rehabilitation engineering, video surveillance, and artificial intelligence. Smartphones are becoming the most popular platform for activity recognition owing to their convenience, portability, and ease of use. The noticeable change in smartphone-based activity recognition is the adoption of a deep learning algorithm leading to successful learning outcomes. In this article, we analyze the technology trend of activity recognition using smartphone sensors, challenging issues for future development, and a strategy change in terms of the generation of a activity recognition dataset.
