Effects of Breath and Exhaust on the Performance of a Reciprocating Engine for Small Aircraft (소형항공기용 왕복엔진의 성능에 관한 흡/배기 영향)

  • The engine performance test was carried out to investigate the effects of breath and exhaust on the performance of a reciprocating engine for small aircraft. In this test, three valves to control flow areas of a inlet and two outlets were used, the engine manifold pressure and the static thrust of propeller were measured in nine breath/exhaust conditions. Generally, small variations on the performance were showed as the test conditions were changed. The manifold pressure was increased as flow area of the inlet or the outlet was decreased in normal condition, however it was decreased as both flow areas were decreased. The static thrust of propeller was showed similar as the manifold pressure.

  • This paper presents the test results of small dipstick-gage-type engine-oil-deterioration-detection sensor. The measured sensor signal characteristics for the capacitance and temperature are analyzed. The engine oil deterioration condition correlates with the electrical property of the dielectric constant that comprised with physical properties such as TAN (Total Acid Number), TBN (Total Base Number) and viscosity. Several problems encontered during the test of the sensor system are improved. The results of vehicle tests show that the capacitance signal is stable after the engine stops. Therefore, the sensor should start measuring the parameters for monitoring the engine oil condition after the engine stops. The engine is considered to be in a stopped state if the difference between the maximum and minimum values of the oil capacitance measured every 1 min is below 0.02 pF. The key test results in this paper will help in the development of an engine oil change warning algorithm.

Applicability to Gas Engine and Small Sized Generator of Low Caloric Synthetic Gas Fuel from Coal Gasification (저발열량 석탄가스화연료의 가스엔진 및 소형발전기 적용연구)

  • This paper presents the applicability of low caloric synthetic gas from coal gasification to a gas engine system and small sized generator. A commercial LPG engine is modified to use the low caloric synthetic gas from coal gasification as the gas engine fuel. The modification is focused on the fuel supplying system, which includes air flowrate adjusting orifice, gas mixer, vaporizer, preheater, regulators, and fuel tank. From the results of engine performance data, we have demonstrated that the engine modified by using the coal gasification gas is well operated from idle to wide open throttle conditions although the engine power is somewhat reduced relative to LPG fueled engine. And we have also demonstrated that the generator is well operated with various loads.

  • The importance of the evaluation and verification of small-size cogeneration system has been emphasized because there is no KS-code related to the small-size cogeneration system. The evaluation method of small-size engine cogeneration system, regarding Japanese standard JIS B-8122 and international standard organization, ISO-8528, was applied to the system. The evaluation methods, start-test, rapid-load-up and rapid-load-down, etc. were executed at the system, and reasonable results were acquired. The electrical and thermal efficiencies were executed and analyzed at various load conditions. The NOx emission at various load condition was also measured. Finally, the gas engine cogeneration system was installed to a site for actual usage and it was continually operated during more than 6 months as the site condition.

  • A CNG/diesel dual-fuel engine uses CNG as the main fuel and injects a small amount of diesel as an ignition priming. This study proposed the modification of the existing diesel engine into a dual-fuel engine that injects diesel with a high pressure by common rail direct injection (CRDI) and by injecting CNG at the intake port for premixing. And experiment was progressed for understanding about effect of CNG mixing ratio. The CNG/diesel dual-fuel engine showed equally satisfactory coordinate torque and power regardless of CNG mixing ratio. The PM emission was low at any CNG mixing ratio because of very small diesel pilot injection. In case of NOx and HC, high CNG mixing ratio showed low NOx and HC emissions at low speed. At medium & high speed, low CNG mixing ratio showed low NOx and HC emissions. Therefore, it would be optimized by controlling CNG mixing ratio.

  • In this study the possibility of hydrogen as a fuel in a small-sized two-stroke SI (Spark ignition) engine was investigated. For this purpose, experimental setup including an engine, a dynamometer, equipments for hydrogen and lubricant oil supply was prepared. And then preliminary experiments for the hydrogen-fueled engine combustion were conducted. In the case of hydrogen-fueled engines comparing to gasoline backfire occurs when the excess air ratio is lower than a specific value. This can cause engine power reduction and damage to the engine parts. The engine was controlled to operate at lean conditions to prevent backfire. Through the control of excess air ratio, the maximum engine brake power output of 3 kW was achieved in a 210 cc engine, while it was 6 kW in case of gasoline fuel.

  • A small-sized industrial diesel engine was converted to a spark ignited engine and then adapted for fuelling with natural gas. After conversion work, general combustion characteristics of the gas engine(such as ignition delay, main and total combustion durations, and heat release characteristics) were studied as a functio of major engine operating variables such as air to fuel ratio, spark timing, and spark plug type. Some other studies on cyclic variation characteristics in IMEP, Pmax and (dp/dφ)max, and also optimum combustion phasing angle were performed.

  • Small sized engine test stand has been built up and modified to measure the engine performance for 15g class small UAV propulsion systems. An engine performance standard test stand was developed in order to validate the prediction performance and to shoot trobles. The performance data were measured and analyzed for the newly developed gasoline engine.

  • Heat release data were obtained by analysis of cylinder diagrams from a test engine, naturally-aspirated small-size four-stroke DI diesel engine. These data were used to decide empirical coefficients of Whitehouse-Way's model, single zone combustion model. Finally, the comparison of calculated with experimental results was performed, and the accuracy of calculated versus experimental data of the model in predicting engine heat release and cylinder pressure was demonstrated.

  • An electrical power generation system driven by main engine shaft, briefly SG system for middle or small size fishing boat is studied experimently. In the SG system, power transmission is performed by a variable displacement hydraulic pump driven by the main engine and a constant displacement hydraulic motor. It was verified that the SG system enabled the generation of electrical power with constant frequency regardless main engine speed. In the SG system, setting reference frequency, sensing generator output frequency and setting controller parameters are performed by performed by programming in a microcomputer, so a countermeasure for physical situations of control object is very easy. Futhermore, the SG system has following features; low initial installation cost, wide freedom of installation in engine room, advantage of application in existing ships, especially fishing boat with hydraulic fishing equipments.
