  • In this paper, we take advantage of Wavelet Transform to identify damping ratios of membrane structures under wind action. Due to the lightweight and flexibility of membrane structures, they are very sensitive to the wind load, and show a type of fluid-structure interaction phenomenon simultaneously. In this study, we firstly obtain the responses of an air-supported membrane structure by ADINA with the consideration of this characteristic, and then conduct Wavelet Transform on these responses. Based on the Wavelet Transform, damping ratios could be obtained from the slope of Wavelet Transform in a semi-logarithmic scale at a certain dilation coefficient. According to this principle, damping ratios could eventually be obtained. There are two numerical examples in this study. The first one is a simulated signal, which is used to verify the accuracy of the Wavelet Transform method. The second one is an air-supported membrane structure under wind action, damping ratios obtained from this method is about 0.05~0.09. The Wavelet Transform method could be regarded as a very good method for the the damping analysis, especially for the large spatial structures whose natural frequencies are closely spaced.

  • An experimental investigation on the wind flow over smooth bell-shaped two-dimensional hills with hill slopes (the ratio of height to half width) of 0.3 and 0.5 is performed in an atmospheric boundary-layer wind tunnel. Two categories of the models are used in the present investigation; six two-dimensional single-hills, and four continuous double-hills. The measurements of the flow field and surface static-pressure distribution are carried out over the Reynolds number (based on the hill height) of 1.9 $\times 10^4, 3.3 \times 10^4, and 5.6 \times 10^4$. The velocity profiles and turbulence characteristics are measured by the pitot-tube and X-type hot-wire anemometer, respectively. The undisturbed boundary-layer profile on the bottom surface of the wind tunnel is reasonably consistent with the power-law profile with $\alpha = 7.0 (1/\alpha$ is the power-law exponent) and shows good spanwise uniformities. The profiles of turbulent intensity are found to be consistent along the centerline of the wind tunnel. The measured non-dimensional speed-up profiles at the hill crest show good agreements with the predictions of Jackson and Hunt's linear theory. The flow separation occurs in the hill slope of 0.5, and the oil-ink dot method is used to find the reattachment points in the leeside of the hill. The measured reattachment points are compared with the numerical predictions. Comparisons of the mean velocity profiles and surface pressure distributions between the numerical predictions and the experimental results show good agreements.

  • Section forces of greenhouse structures were studied to suggest basic information for the structural design of greenhouses with respect to roof types and support conditions. Structural analyses were performed for pitched and arched roof, and fixed and hinged support under snow loads and wind loads. Followings are the results obtained and are expected to be useful in determining the span length and roof type in greenhouse design. 1. Special considerations might he required for roof design at the heavy snow region, and for the support design at the strong wind region, respectively. 2. Single-span structure was found to be stronger than multi-span structure under the snow load, but the former was found to be weaker than the latter under the wind load. 3. Arched roof structure was expected to be safer than pitched roof structure if the dimensions and loads were equal. 4. Greenhouse orientation and roof slope should be considered in optimum structural design of grrenhouses, because these two factors are closely related with the influence of wind load and snow load.

  • In this paper, the fluctuating lift and drag forces on 5:1 rectangular cylinders with two different geometric scales in three turbulent flow-fields are investigated. The study is particularly focused on understanding the influence of the ratio of turbulence integral length scale to structure characteristic dimension (the length scale ratio). The results show that both fluctuating lift and drag forces are influenced by the length scale ratio. For the model with the larger length scale ratio, the corresponding fluctuating force coefficient is larger, while the spanwise correlation is weaker. However, the degree of influence of the length scale ratio on the two fluctuating forces are different. Compared to the fluctuating drag, the fluctuating lift is more sensitive to the variation of the length scale ratio. It is also found through spectral analysis that for the fluctuating lift, the change of length scale ratio mainly leads to the variation in the low frequency part of the loading, while the fluctuating drag generally follows the quasi-steady theory in the low frequency, and the slope of the drag spectrum at high frequencies changes with the length scale ratio. Then based on the experimental data, two empirical formulas considering the influence of length scale ratio are proposed for determining the lift and drag aerodynamic admittances of a 5:1 rectangular cylinder. Furthermore, a simple relationship is established to correlate the turbulence parameter with the fluctuating force coefficient, which could be used to predict the fluctuating force on a 5:1 rectangular cylinder under different parameter conditions.

  • In order to test the predictability of the wind resource assessment computer code in our country a field experiment and prediction by WAsP has been compared. A field experiment has been performed in Songdang province, Jeju island, composed of sea, inland flat terrain, a high and a low slope craters. For this experiment, four meteorological towers have been installed at seashores, inland flat and on a crater. Wind resource at one site is predicted by WAsF with the meteorological data at the other three sites. The comparisons show that the WAsP preditions give better agreement with experimental data by adjusting the roughness descriptions.

  • For study on the unsteady wall interference effect, flows around a forced oscillating airfoil in closed test-section wind tunnels have been numerically investigated by solving compressible Navier-Stokes equations. The numerical scheme is based on a node-based finite-volume method with the Roe's flux-difference splitting and an implicit time-integration method coupled with dual time-step sub-iteration. The Spalart-Allmaras one-equation model is employed for the turbulence effect. The computed results of the oscillating airfoil having a thin wake showed that the lift curve slope is increased and the magnitude of hysteresis loop is reduced by the interference effects. Since the vortex around the airfoil is generated and convected downstream faster than the free-air condition, the phase of lift, drag and pitching moment coefficients was shifted. The pressure on the test section wall shows harmonic terms having the oscillating frequency contained in the wail effect.

  • Forest fuel moisture content is a crucial factor influencing the combustion rate and fuel consumption during forest fires, significantly impacting the occurrence and spread of wildfires. In this study, meteorological data were gathered using a meteorological measuring device (HOBO data logger) installed in the south and north slopes of Kangwon National University Forest, as well as on bare land outside the forest, from November 1, 2021, to October 31, 2022. The objective was to analyze the relationship between meteorological data and fuel moisture content. Fuel moisture content from the ground cover on the south and north slopes was collected. Fallen leaves on the ground were utilized, with a focus on broad-leaved trees (Prunus serrulata, Quercus dentata, Quercus mongolica, and Castanea crenata) and coniferous trees (Pinus densiflora and Pinus koraiensis), categorized by species. Additionally, correlation analysis with fuel moisture content was conducted using temperature (average, maximum, and minimum), humidity (average, minimum), illuminance (average, maximum, and minimum), and wind speed (average, maximum, and minimum) data collected by meteorological measuring devices in the study area. The results indicated a significant correlation between meteorological factors such as temperature, humidity, illuminance, and wind speed, and the moisture content of fuels. Notably, exceptions were observed for the moisture content of the on the north slope and that of the ground cover of Prunus serrulata and Castanea crenata.
