  • The natural disaster occurrences and the loss of lives caused by the steep-slope failures in Korea were investigated in this study. The investigation includes the frequency rate of the steep-slope failures with respect to the characteristics of precipitation, underlying bedrock, and weathered soils. Analysis on the problems in the existing estimation methods of steep-slope failure was also undertaken, and a new model using unsaturated infinite slope stability was developed for the better slope failure estimation. The slope analyses by the newly developed model were performed considering unsaturated infinite slope, the gradient of slope, and hydro/mechanical properties of soils. Steep-slope failure estimation criterion is proposed based on the analysis results. In addition, the precipitation amount corresponding to warning stages against steep-slope failure is provided as an equation of Intensity-Duration criterion.

  • Estimating seismic displacements has a great importance for foundations on or adjacent to slope surfaces. However, dynamic solution of the problem has received little attention by previous researchers. This paper presents a new analytical model to determine seismic displacements of the shallow foundations adjacent to slopes. For this purpose, a dynamic equilibrium equation is written for the foundation with failure wedge. Stiffness and damping at the sliding surface are considered variable and a simple method is proposed for its estimation. Finally, for different failure surfaces, the calculated dynamic displacement and the surfaces with maximum strain are selected as the critical failure surface. Analysis results are presented as curves for different slope angles and different foundation distances from edge of the slope and are then compared with the experimental studies and software results. The comparison shows that the proposed model is capable of estimating seismic displacement of the shallow foundations adjacent to slopes. Also, the results demonstrate that, with increased slope angle and decreased foundation distances from the slope edge, seismic displacement increases in a non-linear trend. With increasing the slope angle and failure wedge angle, maximum strain of failure wedge increases. In addition, effect of slope on foundation settlement could be neglected for the foundation distances over 3B to 5B.

  • In this study, the back analysis was performed by means of stereo-net, plane failure and block failure method to collapsed fields among the rock slopes designed by standardized criterion, and the internal frictions from the back analysis were compared with those used to reinforcement design. It was concluded that in the result of the analysis by means of stereo net, plain failure and block failure methods, the internal frictions used to re-design of collapsed slope underestimated 10$^{\circ}$, 5$^{\circ}$ and 10$^{\circ}$ in average. At present, the internal friction on the design is used the experience value according to the state of weathering, but internal friction angle by the back analysis on collapsed slope with various methods were more reliable values than those from the present method. And it was concluded that re-design was made extravagantly because the internal friction used to re-design for reinforcement of the collapsed slope was less than back analysis.

  • In this study, the design method of slope reinforced by the earth retention systems were systematically developed, and the flow chart of design procedure fur each system were constructed to design the slope rationally. The proposed design method is composed of 5 steps such as field condition investigation step, slope design step, landslide occurrence prediction step, slope failure scale estimation step and reinforcement countermeasure selection step. The quantitative standard of slope failure scale was established based on the arrangement of various overseas standards which is estimating the slope failure, and the analysis of slope failure scale which is occurred in the country. The slope failure scale is classified into three categories the small scale of slope failure is less than $150m^3$ of slope failure volume, the middle scale of slope failure is from $150m^3$ to $900m^3$ and the large scale of slope failure is more than $900m^3$. The earth retention system could be selected by the proposed slope failure scale based on the slope failure volume. Meanwhile, the design methods of earth retention system such as piles, soil nails and anchors were developed. The optimal countermeasure for slope stability could be proposed using above design methods.

  • It is necessary, in the light of the importance of long-term slope stability problem, to develop a simple method or tool which can figure out the possible failure zone resulted from weathering effect and other factors. The FBG sensor system is used to estimate the correlations between the temperature and the slope in Kimhae, and to find a failure zone in slopes effectively. This research is to seek for the correlation between the soil temperature distribution and the strain distribution in a active zone by analyzing the data from the in-situ measurement so that the possible failure zone should be well defined based on the correlation. For instance, the zone of high temperature fluctuation can be regarded as one of the possible sliding zone due to the weathering effect while the constant temperature depth of the ground, if exists would not be relatively affected by the weathering process.

  • A probabilistic model for the failure in a homogeneous soil slope is presented. The Safety of the slope is measured through its probability of failure rather than the customary factor of safety. The safety margin of slope failure is assumed to follow a normal distribution. Sources of uncertainties affecting characterization of soil property in a homogeneous soil layer include inherent spatial variability., estimation error from insufficient samples, and measurement errors. Uncertainties of the shear strength-along potential failure surface are expressed by one-dimensional random field models. The rupture surface, created at toe of a soil slope, has been considered to propagate towards the boundary along a path following an exponential (log-spiral) law. Having derived the statistical characteristics of the rupture surface and of the forces which act along it, the probability of failure of the slope was found. Finally the developed procedure has been applied in a case study to yield the reliability of a soil slope.

  • There is a increasing trend in disaster occurrence due to steep-slope failures in urban area during typhoon and torrential rain season in Korea. The underlying hazards that cause slope failure are mainly linked with urbanization and industrialization. To minimize the disaster damages by slope failure, objective and unified evaluation approached are desired. Since currently available evaluation checklists are developed for specific purposed, there is a limitation to adapt those checklists for stability evaluation in natural terrain. This study proposes an improved evaluation checklist based on the comparison of previous checklists and applicability and feasibility are analyzed implementing field application.

  • Stability analyses on the 17 railroad cut-off soil slopes were carried out. The influences of rainfall infiltration on the slope stabilities were taken into account by seepage analyses using finite element method and by assuming ground water tables to be located adjacent to soil surface. The validity of those analyses were evaluated by comparing the slope failure characteristics between analysis results and the past failure records. The analyses were not appropriate to estimate the failure surface and the method considering only the increase of pore-water pressure (reduction of matric suction) as the influence of rainfall cannot appropriately estimate the surficial failures that occurred most of the cut-off soil slopes. For the better estimation of the surficial failure, the influence of water flows over slope surface which erode soil mass and/or increase driving force, should be evaluated and considered.

  • A reliability analysis is performed to investigate the influence of the uncertainty from few in-situ samples and inherent heterogeneity of the ground on the probability of failure for a rock cut slope. The results are compared with those of deterministic slope stability analysis. The random variables used are unit weight of the rock, the angle of potential slope of failure, and cohesion and internal friction angle of joints. It was found that the rock slope in which the factor of safety satisfied the minimum safety factor in the deterministic analysis has high probability of failure in the reliability analysis when the weak geological strata are involved in the cut slope. The probability of failure of rock slope is most sensitive to the mean and standard deviation of cohesion in rock joint among the random soil parameters included in the reliability analysis. Sensitivities of the mean values are larger than those of standard deviations, which means that accurate estimation of the mean for the in-situ geotechnical properties is important.
