  • Icosahedron and dodecahedron designs are experimental designs which can be used for response surface analysis for the case when three independent variables are involved. When we are interested in estimating the slope of a response surface, slope rot at ability is a desirable property. In this paper, we derive conditions for icosahedron and dodecahedron designs to have slope rotatability, and actually obtain some slope-rotatable icosahedron and dodecahedron designs. We also apply Park and Kim (1992)'s measure of slope rotatability to icosahedron and dodecahedron designs, and observe resultant facts.

  • In the design of experiments for response surface analysis, sometimes it is of interest to estimate the difference of responses at two points. If differences at points close together are involved, the design that reliably estimates the slope of response surface is important. This idea was conceptualized by slope rotatability by Hader & Park (1978) and Park (1987). Until now, second order polynomial models were only studied for slope ratatability. In this paper, we will propose the necessary and sufficient conditions for slope rotatability over all directions for the thired order polynomial models in two, three and four independent variables. Also practical slope rotatable designs over all directions for two independent variables are suggested.

  • The flow in the beginning lateral sewer can be characterized as intermittent and unsteady, and a moment maximum flow energy is required to transport fecal solids in the sewer. It is thus difficult to design to satisfy a minimum velocity criteria (0.6m/s), because of the substantially lower discharge in the beginning lateral sewer. This study is the result of a field survey, and aims to determine a design criteria for the minimum slope to prevent sediment in a lateral sewer. The survey performed on the two flat small catchments in Goyang-si consisting of D400mm hume-pipe, aimed to understand the manner in which the scope of a sewer slope has an effect on sediment in the beginning lateral sewer. The survey showed that the sewer slope below 3‰ had sedimentation of 88.7%, while the sewer slope of 3~6‰ had sedimentation of 47.8%. In addition, the minimum design slope was estimated to refer to the result of hydraulic experiments from Public Works Research Institute in Japan. Analysis showed that the D400mm hume pipe should be installed with a slope of 6.5‰ to prevent sediment in the beginning lateral sewer. For future installations, the study results showed that a D300mm plastic pipe requires a minimum slope of 3.5‰, and a D250mm plastic pipe requires a minimum slope of 3.3‰ in the beginning lateral sewer.

  • The stability of cutting slope influences the safety of railway operation, and how to identify the stability of the slope quickly and determine the rational monitoring plan is a pressing problem at present. In this study, the attribute recognition model of risk assessment for high cutting slope stability in the heavy haul railway is established based on attribute mathematics theory, followed by the consequent monitoring scheme design. Firstly, based on comprehensive analysis on the risk factors of heavy haul railway loess slope, collapsibility, tectonic feature, slope shape, rainfall, vegetation conditions, train speed are selected as the indexes of the risk assessment, and the grading criteria of each index is established. Meanwhile, the weights of the assessment indexes are determined by AHP judgment matrix. Secondly, The attribute measurement functions are given to compute attribute measurement of single index and synthetic attribute, and the attribute recognition model was used to assess the risk of a typical heavy haul railway loess slope, Finally, according to the risk assessment results, the monitoring content and method of this loess slope were determined to avoid geological disasters and ensure the security of the railway infrastructure. This attribute identification- risk assessment- monitoring design mode could provide an effective way for the risk assessment and control of heavy haul railway in the loess plateau.

  • Soil nailing method is widely used in reinforcing slopes and excavating earth. The analysis of nail-reinforced slopes, in order to determine the economical length ratio and nail angle, complicated analytical need to be applied by means of computer programs. Therefor this suggested Soil stability Chart for nailed slopes which may be very useful for pre-design, rapidly design, and final check. Three slope types, three nail length and three nail angles are selected for the stability analysis by using limit equilibrium method of Bishop and French Method. From the above results, this study propose the slope reinforced design charts for dry season and rainy season. This proposed reinforced design charts can check dry season as well as rainy season, also these charts can provide reinforcing requirement, soil nail's economical length ratio and nail angle as well.

  • Many factors about the stability for the reservoir embankments is determined when the facility is completed. Therefore the initial design of the embankment is important. Many researchers focused the effect of soil parameters although the cross section greatly affects the stability and can be controlled in design step. The objective of this research is to analysis of the effects for the safety factor of slope and seepage according to change cross-section in embankment. As a result, the quantity of seepage decreased as the gradient of downstream slope decreased and was proportional to the height of embankments. There was a linear relationship between the gradient of slope and the safety factor of slope. However the gradient of slope did not affect other side slope. All in a relationship, regressive equations with a high correlation coefficient were calculated and can be applied the simple estimation method of the stability using the cross-section. As results of analyzing the sensitivity, the friction angle and permeability critically effect for the slope stability and the seepage, respectively. The effect of the slope gradient was similar to major soil properties.

  • In this paper, relatively new slope reinforcing system using an anchored wall is presented. For practical design purposes a method of external and internal stability analyses of an anchored wall installed at the toe of the original unstable or quasi-stable slope is developed. And also Murray's full-scale test results are compared with the passive resistance of an anchor predicted by the present study. Finally a design example of reinforced slope using an anchored wall is analyzed, and the safety as well as benefits is compared with a method of changing the geometry of the original unstable slope.

  • It is very difficult to determine the failure block scale in great rock slopes. Especially, postulating entire slope domain as a failure block without attention to discontinuity trace lenth makes very confuse and difficult to design rock slopes. In this paper, we estimate realistic failure block scale using joint system simulation method and introduce the application procedures on rock slope analysis. Besides, presenting how joint characteristics measurement and statistical analysis results are applicated to slope stability analysis design flow.
