Effect of Slope Exposure on Winter Hardiness of Grasses (경사방향이 목초의 월동성에 미치는 영향)

  • This experiment was canied out to investigated the effect of slope exposure on winter hardiness of grasses in mountainous pastures of Taekwalyong area The results obtained were summarized as follows; 1. Plant vigour(PV) before wintering influenced on the growth of next spring, field survival rates and winter hardiness of grasses. 2. The dry weight of plant per relative tiller appearance rates(DW/RTAR) was significantly negative correlated with plant vigour(PV) before wintering, but the weight of plant per relative tiller appearance rates(DW1 RTAR) were significantly positive correlated with the number of tiller per plant before wintering($NT_O$), number of tillers per plant of 1st cutting(NT), dry weight of plant(DW), field survival rates(SR) and relative tiller appearance rate(RTAR). 3. There ranking order of high winter hardiness of grasses, it were west(W), north-north west(NNW), eastsoutheast( ESE) and south-southwest(SSW) exposure, respectively.

Slope Stability and Development of Debris Flow Deposit in the Ulleung Basin, East Sea (동해 울릉분지의 사면안정성 및 쇄설류 퇴적체의 발달)

  • The shallow sediments in the southwestern Ulleung Basin consist of mass flow deposits such as slide/slump and debris flow deposits (DFD), caused by slope failure. These sediments are proven to be important in studying geological disaster and stability of the seafloor. In this paper, we analysised the flow accumulation and slope failure susceptibility of the Ulleung Basin on the basis of multi-beam data, collected in this area. We also studied the distribution pattern and the seismic characteristics of the DFD in the uppermost layer of the Ulleung Basin on the basis of seismic data. The slope susceptibility was calculated as the frequency ratio of each factors including slope, aspect, curvature and stream power index (SPI), which causes the slope failure. These results indicate that the slope failure is frequently to occur in the southern and western continental slope of the Ulleung Basin. The sediment flow (mass flow) caused by the slope failure converges to the north and northwest of the Ulleung Basin. According to the seismic characteristics, the uppermost layer in study area can be divided into four sedimentary unit. These sedimentary units develop from the south and southwest to the north and northwest in association with slope susceptibility and flow accumulation.

Rock-Surface Temperatures of the Summit Area of Mt. Halla as a Habitat for an Arctic-alpine Plant Diapensia lapponica var. obovata (돌매화나무 서식지로서 한라산 정상 암벽 표면의 온도특성)

  • In Mt. Halla, an arctic-alpine plant Diapensia lapponica var. obovata largely clings to rock surfaces. We observed the rock-surface temperatures of a rocky ridge on the summit area of the mountain from late April 2009 to early May 2010 in order to examine the diurnal and annual temperature variations and the thermal amplitude. We also investigated temperature regimes such as the frequency of freeze-thaw cycles and the temperature change, which might endanger the habitat through frost weathering. For comparison of slope aspects, temperature monitoring was carried out on the north and south faces of the same rocky ridge. The south face experiences the high daily maximum rock-surface temperatures and the high thermal amplitudes during the unfreezing season of May to November 2009. The temperature regimes are considered to exert physiological stress to the arctic-alpine plant. In addition, the south face shows the high frequency of freeze-thaw cycles during the seasonal freezing period of December 2009 to April 2010. This indicates that the south face is susceptible the exfoliation and granular disintegration of rock surfaces, which results in habitat destruction. As a consequence, the south face is believed to be less favorable for the establishment and growth of the arctic-alpine plant than the north face on the summit area of Mt. Halla.

The Sea Level Slopes along the Korean Peninsular Coast based on the First Order Levelling Net in Korea (1등 수준망에 기준한 한반도 연안의 해면경사)

  • The height differences in Mean Sea Level is an important factor in geodetic leveling net, because MSL is the reference datum for height. Geodesists and Oceanographers agree on the height differences in MSL in the east-west direction, but they disagree almost always on the north-south slope, each suspecting systematic errors in the leveling methods of the others. A promising method for determining this slope is comparison of MSL at the tidal station connected by geodetic leveling. The slopes of the sea surface along the coast of Korean Peninsular is estimated from conventional local MSL at the tidal station and bench mark height of first order leveling net in Korea. As a reference level surface, MSL at Inchon is chosen. The results indicate that sea level rises along coast of Korean Peninsular from south to north about 5.5 cm/latitude. In the east-west direction, sea level along East Sea coast stands about 5 cm higher than that along Yellow Sea coast. These are not invariable but provisional phenomena. It may become certain provided that the exact MSL is estimated.

Effects of Slope Orientation and Altitude on the Forage Yield and Botanical Composition of Alpine Pasture (고산지대초지의 사향지별 및 표고별 차이에 따른 수량과 식생변화에 관한 연구)

  • A field experiment was conducted during the growing season of 1985 to determine the effects of slope orientation, north and south facing exposures and three different altitudes, 800, 1,000 and 1,200m a.s.1. on the dry matter yield, forage quality and botanical composition of alpine pasture. 1. Total dry matter yield of alpine pasture was influenced by slope orientation and altitude. An average forage yield of both exposures at 1,000m a.s.1. was 9,301kg/ha compared with 10,274kg/ha at 800m a.s.1. and the productivity express in relative percentage decreased by 9.5% per 200m attitudinal increase. 2. An average forage yield of both altitudes, 800 and 1,000m a.s.1. on the south facing exposure was 21.5% higher than that on the north exposure. 3. Crude protein concentration of forage grown on both exposures was lowest at 800m a.s.1. increasing gradually as the altitude increased, but crude fiber concentration decreaced in a manner opposite to that of crude protein. 4. Forage grown on the north facing exposure had a higher concentration of crude protein than that grown on the south facing exposure at the same altitude, but lower concentraion of crude fiber. 5. Orchardgrass and timothy were two main species on both exposures at 800m a.s.1. but timothy was only dominant species at 1,000 and 1,200m a.s.1. and performed well up to 1,200m a.s.1. in alpine area. The economic production limit of orchardgrass would be about 800m a.s.1. in the alpine pasture. 6. No soil property differences were found between the north and south facing exposures as well as three different altitudes in the alpine pasture. It seemed that the previous pasture fertilization of the experimental field completely overshadowed any soil property differences from slope orientation and altitude.

A Sub-grid Scale Estimation of Solar Irradiance in North Korea (북한지역 상세격자 디지털 일사량 분포도 제작)

  • Reliable information on the surface solar radiation is indispensable for rebuilding food production system in the famine plagued North Korea. However, transfer of the related modeling technology of South Korea is not possible simply because raw data such as solar radiation or sunshine duration are not available. The objective of this study is restoring solar radiation data at 27 synoptic stations in North Korea by using satellite remote sensing data. We derived relationships between MODIS radiation estimates and the observed solar radiation at 18 locations in South Korea. The relationships were used to adjust the MODIS based radiation data and to restore solar radiation data at those pixels corresponding to the 27 North Korean synoptic stations. Inverse distance weighted averaging of the restored solar radiation data resulted in gridded surfaces of monthly solar radiation for 4 decadal periods (1983-1990, 1991-2000 and 2001-2010), respectively. For a direct application of these products, we produced solar irradiance estimates for each sub-grid cell with a 30 m spacing based on a sun-slope geometry. These products are expected to assist planning of the North Korean agriculture and, if combined with the already prepared South Korean data, can be used for climate change impact assessment across the whole Peninsula.

The Value and Application of The Mt. Palgong in Daegu (대구 팔공산의 가치와 활용방안)

  • This paper aims to investigate the value in culture, history and ecology of the Mt. Palgong. It attempts to build the strategy for making use of The Mt. Palgong by literature survey, interview, and field survey. The main results are as follows: 1) The boundary of physical geography of the Mt. Palgong is classified into two. The boundary of the Mt. Palgong limits to granite mass block in a narrow sense, while in a broad sense, the boundary of the Mt. Palgong includes a contact aureole to be bordered on the Mt. Palgong granite mass block. The boundary from a cultural viewpoint limits to Daegu city(excluding Dalseong county) and Gyeongsan city, Yeongcheon city, Gunwi county and Chilgok (Dongmyeong-myeon, Giseong-myeon) in Gyeongbuk province. 2) In the geological boundary, one of the south-west slope is clearer than that of the north-east slope of the Mt. Palgong. The landforms such as tor, sheeting joint and gutter are well developed as a whole. Mountain landform such as boulder stream, polygonal cracking is relatively well developed on the south-west slope, while river landform is relatively well developed on the north-east slope of the Mt. Palgong. 3) It is necessary to develope various masterpiece of interesting stories related to Mt. Palgong in order to make the Mt. Palgong excellent tour complex. 4) It is desirable to designate the Mt. Palgong as a national park for systematic management. A master plan should be ultimately designed to raise brand value of Daegu city, and make good identity of the city by restoring 'The Mt. Palgong Jecheondan' and registering 'Gatbawi' as world heritage. 5) It is reasonable that the method of development in The Mt. Palgong should be based on the pattern of 'slow life town'. 'The Mt. Palgong museum' will then be designed to give visitors all the informations on The Mt. Palgong.

The vertical distribution of the vegetation on Mt. Hanla (한라산 식물의 수직분포)

  • This study investigated the vertical distribution of the vegetation in Mt. Hanla of Quelpart Island from 1967 to 1969. According to the physiognomy and life form of plants, the following plant communities are observed and arranged tentatively from the foot to the top. A. North-facing slope. (1) Grass land(0∼600m) (2) Deciduous broad-leaved forest(600∼1200m) (3) Mixed forest(broad and needle leaved forest : 1200∼1300m) (4) Evergreen coniferous forest(1300∼1700m) (5) Scrub communities(1700∼1950m) B. South-facing slope. (1) Grass land(0∼700) (2) Deciduous broad-leaved forest(700∼1300m) (3) Mixed forest(1300∼1550m) (4) Evergreen coniferous forest (1550∼850m) (5) Scrub communities(1850∼1950m) D. West-facing slope. Hanla are mainly distribut4ed deciduous broad-leaved forest. (2) In the region of Mt. Hanla are mainly distributed scrub. (3) In the region of lava of Gogun-san are involved deciduous broad-leaved forest, scrub and grass land of Gaimi-Dung.

Estimation of Climatological Precipitation of North Korea by Using a Spatial Interpolation Scheme (지형기후학적 공간내삽에 의한 북한지역 강수기후도 작성)

  • A topography-precipitation relationship derived from the southern part of Korean Peninsula was applied to North Korea where climate stations are few and widely separated. Two hundred and seventy seven rain gauge stations of South Korea were classified into 8 different groups depending on the slope orientation (aspect) of the region they are located. Monthly precipitation averaged over 10 year period (1986-1995) was regressed to topographical variables of the station locations. A 'trend precipitation' for each gauge station was extracted from the precipitation surface interpolated from the monthly precipitation data of 24 standard stations of the Korea Meteorological Administration and used as a substitute for y-axis intercept of the regression equation. These regression models were applied to the corresponding regions of North Korea, which were identified by slope orientation, to obtain monthly precipitation surface for the aspect regions. 'Trend precipitation' from the 10 year data of 27 North Korean standard stations was also used in the model calculation. Output grids for each aspect region were mosaicked to form the monthly and annual precipitation surface with a 1km$\times$1km resolution for the entire territory of North Korea. Spatially averaged annual precipitation of North Korea was 938 mm with the standard deviation of 246 mm.

Longitudinal Gradients and Seasonal Dynamics of Nutrients, Organic Matter and Conductivity Along the Main Axis of Han-River

  • The purpose of the study was to evaluate spatial and temporal dynamics of nutrients (TN, TP), organic pollution (BOD, COD), and ionic dynamics (electrical conductivity, EC) in the North Han-River, South Han-River, and merged downriver using the dataset of $1998{\sim}2007$, obtained from the MEK (Ministry of Environment, Korea). Accord. ing to interannual nutrient analysis, TN varied slightly in the North Han-River and South Han-River, but decreased in the merged downriver along with BOD. Longitudinal analysis in the water quality showed that BOD, COD, and nutrients had linear decreasing trend along the main axis of headwater-to-downriver. Concentrations of TP and TN in the North Han-River averaged $26.97{\mu}g\;L^{-1}$, $1.696mg\;L^{-1}$, respectively, which were minimum in the three watersheds, followed by South Han-River and then the merged downriver in order. Ratios of TN:TP in the watersheds were >40 in all the sites, indicating that nitrogen may be enough for periphyton or phytoplankton growth and phosphorus may be limited partially. After the North Han-River water is merged with South Han-River, the concentrations of BOD, COD, TN, and TP were similar to the values of $S6{\sim}S7$, respectively or a little bit higher, but increased abruptly in Site M4 (Fig. 3). Thus, mean values of all the water quality parameters in the reach of $M4{\sim}M7$ sites were greater than any other sites. Seasonal data analysis indicated that BOD and EC in the downstream ($S3{\sim}S7$) was greater in the premonsoon than two seasons of the monsoon and postmonsoon, and no significant differences in BOD between the three seasons were found in the upstream ($S1{\sim}S2$). Empirical models of COD in the merged downriver was predicted ($R^2=0.87$, p>0.01, slope = 0.84, intercept = -1.28) well by EC. These results suggest that EC to be measured easily in the field may be used for estimations of nutrients and organic matter pollutions in the merged downriver and these linear models are cost-effective for the monitoring of the parameters.
