  • In this paper we proposed an energy adaptive data aggregation and transmission mechanism to solve the problem of energy limitation in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Hierarchical structure methods are wildly used in WSNs to improve the energy efficiency. LEACH and TEEN protocols are the typical techniques. In these methods, all nodes, including nodes who have sensed data to transmit and nodes who haven't, are set frame timeslots in every round. MNs (member nodes) without sensed data keep active all the time, too. These strategies caused energy waste. Furthermore, if data collection in MNs is same to the previous transmission, it increases energy consumption. Most hierarchical structure protocols are developed based on LEACH. To solve the above problems, this paper proposed a method in which only MNs with sensed data can obtain allocated frame to transmit data. Moreover, if the MNs have same sensed data with previous, MNs turn to sleep mode. By this way redundant data transmission is avoided and aggregation in CH is lightened, too.

  • More and more people are suffering from sleep disturbance, which can have many different causes. The healthcare industry, which can help people with this disability, is one technology that is currently in the spotlight. However, current services are vulnerable to data concentration, because they are simple telemedicine services that transmit all data to a remote server and process the data on the server. They have a disadvantage in that the data cannot be streamed in real time by synchronizing the biometric data of remotely protected persons. In order to solve this problem, we propose a service structure for streaming biometric data of protected persons to a hospital or guardian in real time, using a self-organizing distributed middleware platform without a central server. We prove that it is possible to provide an effective streaming service by evaluating the service start time and average delay time.

  • In this paper we propose a traffic aware Demand Wakeup MAC(TADW-MAC) protocol, in which low data delay and high throughput can be achieved, for wireless sensor networks. With the TADW-MAC protocol, the problem of the DW-MAC protocol, which schedules only one packet to deliver during the Sleep period in a multi-hop transmission is resolved. DW-MAC is not adequate for the applications such as object tracking and fire detection, in which busty data should be transmitted in a limited time when an event occurs [6-8]. When an event occurs, duty cycle can be adjusted in the TADW-MAC protocol to get less energy consumption and low latency. The duty cycle mechanism has been widely used to save energy consumption of sensor node due to idle listening in wireless sensor networks. But additional delay in packet transmission may be increased in the mechanism. Our simulation results show that TADW-MAC outperforms RMAC and DW-MAC in terms of energy efficiency while achieving low latency.

  • In this paper, we focus on the problem of designing an energy efficient MAC protocol for wireless sensor networks and analyze S(Sensor)-MAC and T(Time-out)-MAC. S-MAC is based on the concept of the 'listen/sleep mode cycle'. This applies message passing to reduce contention latency for sensor-network applications that require store-and-forward processing as data moves through the network. However unlike the S-MAC, where the duration of the cycle is fixed, T-MAC introduces an adaptive duty cycle in a novel way: by dynamical ending the active part of it. This reduces the amount of energy wasted on idle listening, in which nodes wait for potentially incoming messages while still maintaining a reasonable throughput. In this paper we discuss the design of these two Protocols. We analyze them from the aspect of latency, throughput, and power savings when using the OMNeT++ simulator in various environments.

  • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Aging is an imperative problem for many countries in this century, and presents several challenges for the maintenance of good nutritional status. This study aims to assess the impact of socio-demographic factors, lifestyle and health status on the nutritional status among the elderly in Taiwan. SUBJECTS/METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried out in Taiwan. Data were obtained from the Mei Jau Health Management Institution, which is a private health evaluation provider with multiple health screening centers in Taiwan and Asia. This study included 7947 adults aged 65 years or above. The data were extracted between 2001 to 2010. Nutritional status was assessed using anthropometric data, biochemical data and dietary intake information. RESULTS: Among the 7947 participants with mean age of 70.1 (SD = 4.5) years, 20.2%, 6.6%, 10.5% and 52.5% experienced underweight, protein malnutrition, anemia and inadequate dietary intake in the past month, respectively. Age was negatively correlated with body weight (r = -0.19, P = 0.02), body mass index (r = -0.41, P < 0.001), albumin level (r = -0.93, P < 0.001) and hemoglobin level (r = -0.30, P = 0.008). Age above 70 years, gender, unmarried status, retirement, lack of education, low family income, smoking, alcohol drinking, sleep duration of 6-8 hours, vegetarian diet, multiple medications, comorbidity and dysphagia were positively associated with malnutrition in older adults. CONCLUSIONS: Underweight and inadequate dietary intake are prevalent among the elderly in Taiwan. Vegetarian diet, multiple medications, comorbidity, dysphagia and lifestyle factors such as smoking, alcohol drinking and sleep duration of 6-8 hours are risk factors for undernutrition in older adults.

  • Battery-operated IoT devices in IoT systems require low power consumption. In general, IoT devices enter a sleep state synchronously to reduce power consumption. A problem arises when an IoT device has to handle asynchronous user requests, as the duty cycle must be reduced to enhance response time. In this paper, we propose a new low-power-consumption scheme, called Repetitive Wake-up scheme for IoT systems of asynchronous environments such as indoor lights control. The proposed scheme can reduce power consumption by sending wake-up signals from the smartphone repetitively and by retaining the IoT device in sleep state to the smallest possible duty cycle. In the various environments with IoT devices at home or office space, we showed that the proposed scheme can reduce power consumption by up to five times compared to the existing synchronous interlocking technique.
