  • Hybrid-fiber reinforced concrete (HFRC) may provide much higher tensile and flexural strengths, tensile ductility, and flexural toughness than normal concrete (NC). HFRC slab has outstanding advantages for use as a composite bridge potential deck slab owing to higher tensile strength, ductility and crack resistance. However, there is little information on shear connector associated with HFRC slabs. To investigate the mechanical behavior of the stud shear connectors embedded in HFRC slab, 14 push-out tests (five batches) in HFRC and NC were conducted. It was found that the stud shear connector embedded in HFRC had a better ductility, higher stiffness and a slightly larger shear bearing capacity than those in NC. The experimentally obtained ultimate resistances of the stud shear connectors were also compared against the equations provided by GB50017 2003, ACI 318-112011, AISC 2011, AASHTO LRFD 2010, PCI 2004, and EN 1994-1-1 (2004), and an empirical equation to predict the ultimate shear connector resistance considering the effect of the HFRC slabs was proposed and validated by the experimental data. Curve fitting was performed to find fitting parameters for all tested specimens and idealized load-slip models were obtained for the specimens with HFRC slabs.

  • Corrosion of steel rebars in bridge decks which are faced to harsh conditions, is a common problem in construction industries due to the porosity of concrete. In this research, the behavior of one-way concrete slabs reinforced with Glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) molded grating is investigated both theoretically and experimentally. In the analytical method, a closed-form solution for load-deflection behavior of a slab under four-point bending condition is developed by considering a concrete slab as an orthotropic plate and defining stiffness coefficients in principal directions. The available formulation for concrete reinforced with steel is expanded for concrete reinforced with GFRP molded grating to predict ultimate failure load. In finite element modeling, an exact nonlinear behavior of concrete along with a 3-D failure criterion for cracking and crushing are considered in order to estimate the ultimate failure load and the initial cracking load. Eight concrete slabs reinforced with steel and GFRP grating in various thicknesses are also tested to verify the results. The obtained results from the models and experiments are relatively satisfactory.

  • This paper deals with the prediction of behavior of composite girder bridges according to the placing sequences of concrete deck. Based on a degenerate kernel of compliance function in the form of Dirichlet series, the time-dependent behaviors of bridges are simulated, and the layer approach is adopted to determine the equilibrium condition in a section. The variation of bending moments along the bridge length caused by the slab casting sequence is reviewed and correlation studies between section types and placing sequences are conducted with the objective to establish the validity of the continuous placing of concrete deck on the closed steel box-girder which is broadly used in practice.

  • This report is on the Reinforcing System(MFRI) for Concrete Structure using FRP ROD & High-Performance Mortar. The main characteristic of this system is as follow. First, the fiber rods in this system have seven times greater tensile strength than general reinforcing steel bars(re-bar) and the weight is a fifth lighter. Camels coated on the fiber rods' surfaces to improve adhesive strength and pull-out strength. Second, high strength shotcrete mortar is has very good workability and low rebound rate. After installing the Fiber Rods, Shotcrete mortar Is applied or sprayed to finish reinforcement. Finally, MFRI system has excellent fire-resisting performance and sogood tolerance against external environment by inserting fiber rods and reinforcing materials into mortar which has high compressive strength. It is applied to bridge slab, utility box and tunnel of civil engineering works, and beam and slab of building structures.

  • This paper proposes a model for the analysis of the construction sequences of steel-concrete composite decks in which the slab is cast-in-situ for segments. The model accounts for early age shrinkage, such as thermal and endogenous shrinkage, drying shrinkage, tensile creep effects and the complex sequences of loading due to pouring of the different slab segments. The evolution of the structure is caught by suitably defining the constitutive relationships of the concrete and the steel reinforcements. The numerical solution is obtained by means of a step-by-step procedure and the finite element method. The proposed model is then applied to a composite deck in order to show its potential.

  • An improved finite element modeling technique is proposed for the assessment of load carrying capacity partilly prestressed concrete beam bridges. Based on the finite element method of analysis, shell and frame elements are utilized to model the slab and beams of the superstructure, respectively. In the modeling of superstructure, the emphasis is placed on the use of rigid link between the middle surface of slab and mid-plane of beam. This paper also includes the comparision of three different equations that used in the calculation of effective moment of inertia for the partially prestressed concrete beams. Numerical analysis is performed for the unstrengthened and strengthened bridges. The obtained results are compared with those of load test for a prototype bridge. Agreement with the numerical solutions by using the proposed method and load test results is generally excellent.

  • Full depth precast concrete bridge deck system can be advantageously to reduce construction time, hence lowering the cost. This system has several significant design and construction component. To connect between the concrete slab and steel girder, precast deck has shear pocket. Post-tensioning tightens the joints and prevents any leakage though the joint. When post-tensioning is applied, stress concentration occurs in the edge of shear pocket. In this study, precast decks using four types of shear pocket is analyzed by F.E.M.

  • In bridge deck systems, deflections and cracking can be controlled by longitudinal and transverse prestressing, There are some benefits, longitudinal cracking control, the thickness reduction of deck slab, the widening of deck width and the reduction of the cross section area, in transversely post-tensioned concrete box girder bridges. However, it has been not sufficient to study the structural behaviors of transversely post-tensioned concrete box girder. Therefore, It is needed to predict the structural behaviors by prestressing and static loading. In this study, the analytical and experimental load tests are carried out to study the effect of transverse prestressing on concrete box girder. For these objectives, four test specimens are fabricated with various tendon spacing and steel ratio of top slab. The analytical and experimental studies are performed to estimate effects of the prestressing and failure tests.

  • It has been applied using cranes or insertion methods to install heavy structures to strengthen existing railway bridges. These methods are uneconomical because of two reasons. The first one is it is required to construct approach roads for heavy equipment and/or working yard. The second one is the electric lines shall be cutoff during construction. Both require additional construction cost and duration. In this study, new transport equipment was developed which can be applied to heavy structures up to 100 ton. Using this method, the heavy structure can be loaded into the new transport equipment at working yard and transported to the working site. This method can be applied, but not limited to railway bridge or roadbed rehabilitation. It was found that the precious construction can be achieved to install heavy structure using this method. The experimental construction to make non-ballast girder bridge composite with new pc deck slab using this method was carried out for Jewon bridge. The example bridge is in extreme condition because it locates above national road #38 within extreme transition curve and has 10 ‰ slope and skew. The experimental construction results were satisfactory both for safety and construction precision.
