  • The purpose of this study w8s to evaluate the effects of pulsed electromagnetic energy(Diapulse) and microcurrent on the wound healing in rabbits. 15 domestic rabbits were randomly assigned to the PRME(n=5). MC(n=5) and CON(n=91 group. Each rabbits were anesthetized with lidocaine HCL $2\%$. Skin wounds were created laterally on the back of IS domestic rabbits(33cm). From 24 hours after being injured, the rabbits of the PEME group were irradiated with an intensity of 3 at a 300 pulses per second, which were applied for 15 minutes every day during the 12 days. The MC group were stimulated with an intensity of $50{\mu}A$ at frequency of40 pulses per second, which were applied for 15 minutes every day during the 12 days. The CON group were not stimulated. The rabbits were sacrificed and the incised wound pans were processed appropriately for the light microscopic examination on the 3rd day, 6th day and 12th day before the beginning of wound treatment. The areas of wound were measured with metric graph paper. The results were as tallows. 1 The PRME and MC group compared with control group showed that wound closure rate increased on 6th, 12th day. 2. It was found that the CON group did not show a complete maturation and had a chronic inflammatory response. Judging from the irregularity of intercellular space and the loose alignment of connective tissue. these findings showed that wound healing was delayed. 3. It showed that inflammatory cells. fibroblasts and epithelial cells activity rapidly processed in the PEME group compared with the CON group. It was found that the PEMI; group showed a advanced remodeling of epithelial layer and a positive repair of connective tissue. 4. It showed that fibroblasts, epithelial cells and inflammatory cells activity rapidly processed in the MC group compared with the CON group. It was found that the MC group showed a improved remodeling of epithelial layer and a dense connective tissue.

  • The ultrastructures of the pigment cells in the Asiatic land salamander (Hynobius leechi) dorsal skin were obtained by means of electron microscope. The results were as follows; 1. The pigment cells of the epidermis consisted of the melanocytes in the germinal layer and of the melanophores distributing to the keratinocyte layer. The traits of these cells in the epidermis were as follows: A. The nuclei of the melanocytes were round or oval in shape and appeared as partly small or large infoldings of the nuclear envelope. B. Rough-surfaced endoplasmic reticulums and Golgi complexes were well developed in infranuclear cytoplasm. Many ribosomes were mainly distributed around the perinuclear portion. C. The melanosomes of the melanocytes were observed as a found or an oval shape and strong electron-dense or less electron-dense melanosomes were observed. D. The infoldings of the nuclear envelope in the melanophore were partly found deeper than those of the melanocyte. The cytoplasm of the melanophore filled with melanosomes caused organelles not to be observed in that. 2. The pigment cells in the dermis were composed of the xanthophores just beneath basement membrane and the melanophores in the connective tissue. The traits of these cells in the dermis were as follows: A. The xanthophores contained round or oval vesicles, and these vesicles were divided into 6 types (type I pterinosome, type II pterinosome, type III pterinosomes, type iv pterinosome, type V pterinosome, type VI pterinosome). B. Most of the nuclei of the melanophores in the dermis were elongate in shape, and a portion of the nuclear envelope was deep infolded. C. Becuase the cytoplasm was filled with the melanosomes of the same electron-density, organelles were not observed in the cytoplasm. D. Two processes of the melanophore in the dermis extended in parallel with a xanthophore and the cytoplasm in those processes were filled with the melanosomes.

  • We studied the effects of dip treatments of natural extracts (Camellia sinensis, Angelica gigas, Astragalus membranaceus, Glycyrrhiza uralensis: 1% extract) on the quality of peeled 'Daebo' chestnut. After dipping treatment peeled chestnuts were vacuum packaged with $75{\mu}m$ PE+Nylon 7-layer film then stored in $4^{\circ}C$ incubator for 35days. The quality changes including the surface color and off-odor were evaluated for storage days. The natural extracts dipping treatment on peeled chestnut was effective on skin browning inhibition. Especially, Astragalus membranaceus and Glycyrrhiza uralensis extract treatments was significantly effective in reducing surface browning. The color change (${\Delta}E$) of peeled chestnut was the highest (5.6) in control, whereas that was the lowest (3.4) under Astragalus membranaceus extract treatment at 35 storage day. The natural exteacts treatments had no effect on the weight, the mositure loss rate, the firmness and the soluble solid contencts of peeled chestnuts during storage after treatment. The decaying rate of peeled chestnut was 9.0% in control, 9.0% in Camellia sinensis extract treatment, 9.0% in Angelica gigas extract treatment, 21.0% in Astragalus membranaceus extract treatment, and 7.0% Glycyrrhiza uralensis extract treatment at 35 storage day. Sensory evaluation revealed significant differences in off-odor and color attributes. After all, the score of overall sensory evaluation was the lowest in Astragalus membranaceus extract treatment and the highest in Glycyrrhiza uralensis extract treatment. As the results, the natural extract treatments, especially with vacuum packing after Glycyrrhiza uralensis extract treatment, extended the shelf-life of the peeled chestnut by inhibiting the surface browning.

  • In this study, we attempted to obtain an active ingredient that inhibits the production of matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1) that breaks down collagen in human skin fibroblasts. More than 50 plant extracts were screened, and Lonicera japonica was selected for this study. The stem of L. japonica was extracted with 70% ethanol and fractions with solvents in the order of hexane, ethyl acetate, and butanol. MMP-1 production were significantly inhibited at the concentration of 50 ㎍/mL of the ethyl acetate layer and 200 ㎍/mL of the butanol layer. To get a fraction containing all of these effective components, 80% ethanol fraction (LJ F80) was obtained through HP20 resin column chromatography. The reference substance, loganin and LJ F80 inhibited dose-dependently MMP-1 production. At the same concentration, LJ F80 showed a higher inhibitory effect than loganin. The stability of this fraction was analyzed with HPLC while kept storing at 4 ℃, room temperature, and 40 ℃, for 16 week. The stability was maintained as ± 10% of initial value with reference loganin. Therefore, it is thought that LJ F80 of L. japonica may be used to improve wrinkles.

  • In this paper, the optimum structure of 2GHz magnetic thin film planar inductor were designed and fabricated to reduce the inductor area and to maximize the inductance L and quality factor Q of the inductor. The optimum design was performed utilizing Co90Fe10 layer multilayered with SiO2 layers to avoid the eddy-current skin effect and considering new lumped element model. New magnetic thin film inductors operating at 2GHz were fabricated on a Si substrate utilizing photo-lithography and lift-off techniques. The frequency characteristics of L, Q, and impedance in more than fifty identical inductors were measured using an RF Impedance Analyzer(HP4291B with HP16193A test fixture). The self-resonant frequencies(SRF) of the inductors were measured by a Vector Network Analyzer(HP8510). The developed inductors have SRF of 1.8 to 2.3GHz, L of 47 to 68nH, and Q of 70 to 80 near 1GHz. Finally, high frequency, high performance, planar micro-inductor(area=30.8 x 30.8il$^2$) with maximized L and Q were fabricated succefully.

  • This paper reports on a prototype cooling garment applying a cooling module. The cooling module was composed of a Peltier device, a cold sink, a heat sink and two fans. A constant box was used to evaluate the cooling effect of the module. Two cooling modules were attached on each side of the garment. The wear trial was conducted using 10 male subjects in an environmental chamber maintained at $30{\pm}0.5^{\circ}C$, $50{\pm}5%$RH. Subjective sensations of thermal, humidity, and comfort were surveyed. Statistical package SPSS12.0 was used for the t-test and the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. The results showed that most effective cooling module decreased the temperature of the constant temperature box by $-4.9^{\circ}C$. The micro-temperature of the cooling garment with a Peltier device was lower than the control garment during the exercise. In particular, the chest skin temperature was $1.5^{\circ}C$ lower with the cooling garment than the control. The maximum temperature difference was $-2.57^{\circ}C$ on the sides of the $1^{st}$ layer. Subjective thermal sensation from wear trials of the Peltier device attached garment was lower than the control garment. Subjects felt more comfortable with the cooling garment in almost all the periods.

  • The pilomatricoma (calcifying epithelioma of Malherbe) is rare benign hard, spherical and freely movable cutaneous tumor, which was differentiated from hair cells, particulary hair cortex cells. It is usually occured as a single, asymptomatic, 0.5 cm to 3.0 cm sized, deep seated, firm nodule, covered by normal or pink skin. It arises chiefly in young people, including children, and most often in the head, neck and upper extrimites. The authers experienced a case of pilomatricoma which occured in preauricular region. This case was summarized as follows. 1. 10 years old female has suffered from hard subepidermal mass on preauricular area and she visited our out patient clinic. So we performed surgical extirpation and the excised specimen was pathologically examined. 2. Grossly the tumor measures 2.0 cm in diameter and firm, bosselated, spherical shaped which covered by a thin layer of fibrous tissue. On cut section, it shows spicular gritty surfaces, well encapsulation, interwoven and keratotic lamellae. 3. Histopathologically, the epithelial masses of the tumor are composed of two type of cells, basophilic cells and shodow cells. The basophilic cells resemble hair matrix cells which posses round or elogated, deeply basophilic nuclei and scanty cytoplasm. The shadow cells show a central, unstained shadow at the site of the lost nucleus. Gradual development of basophilic cells into shadow cells can be observed. Foci of calcification are present within the lobule of shadow cells. The stroma of the tumor shows a considerable foreign body giant cell reaction adjacent to the shadow cells. 4. No recurrence was observed until post-operative 40 months.

  • This paper presents design and specific absorption rate analysis of a 2.4 GHz wearable patch antenna on a conventional and electromagnetic bandgap (EBG) ground planes, under normal and bent conditions. Wearable materials are used in the design of the antenna and EBG surfaces. A woven fabric (Zelt) is used as a conductive material and a 3 mm thicker Wash Cotton is used as a substrate. The dielectric constant and tangent loss of the substrate are 1.51 and 0.02 respectively. The volume of the proposed antenna is $113{\times}96.4{\times}3mm^3$. The metamaterial surface is used as a high impedance surface which shields the body from the hazards of electromagnetic radiations to reduce the Specific Absorption Rate (SAR). For on-body analysis a three layer model (containing skin, fats and muscles) of human arm is used. Antenna employing the EBG ground plane gives safe value of SAR (i.e. 1.77W/kg<2W/kg), when worn on human arm. This value is obtained using the safe limit of 2 W/kg, averaged over 10g of tissue, specified by the International Commission of Non Ionization Radiation Protection (ICNIRP). The SAR is reduced by 83.82 % as compare to the conventional antenna (8.16 W/kg>2W/kg). The efficiency of the EBG based antenna is improved from 52 to 74 %, relative to the conventional counterpart. The proposed antenna can be used in wearable electronics and smart clothing.

  • Amaranth(Amaranthus spp. L.) and quinoa (Chenpodium quinoa Willd.) are old crops from South, Central America and Central Asia and their grains have been identified as very promising food crops because of their exceptional nutritive value. Squalene is an important ingredient in skin cosmetics and computer disc lubricants as well as bioactive materials such as inhibition of fungal and mammalian sterol biosynthesis, antitumor, anticancer, and immunomodulation. Amaranth has a component called squalene (2,6,10,15,19,23-hexamethyl-2,6,10,14,22-tetraco-sahexaene) about 1/300 of the seed and $5\~8\%$ of its seed oil. Oil and squalene content in amaranth seed were different for the species investigated. Squalene content in seed oil also increased by $15.5\%$ due to puffing and from 6.96 to $8.01\%$ by refining and bleaching. Saponin concentrations in quinoa seed ranged 0.01 to $5.6\%$. Saponins are located in the outer layers of quinoa grain. These layers include the perianth, pericarp, a seed coat layer, and a cuticle like structure. Oleanane-type triterpenes saponins are of great interest because of their diverse pharmacological properties, for instance, anti-inflammatory, antibiotic, contraceptive, and cholesterol-lowering effects. It is known that quinoa contains a number of structurally diverse saponins including the aglycones, oleanolic acid, hederagenin, and phytolaccagenic acid, which are new potential in gredient for pharmacological properties. It is likely that these saponin levels will be considerably affected by genetic, agronomic and environmental factors as well as by processing. With the current enhanced public interest in health and nutrition amaranth and quinoa will most likely remain in the immediate future within the realm of exotic health foods until such time as agricultural production meets the quantities and qualify required by industrial food manufacturers.

  • Purpose: Chondroid syringoma is a rare mixed tumor of the skin that was first described by Hirsch and Helwig (1961). Characteristically, it is composed of the proliferation of epithelial cells in a myxoid and chondroid matrix. Most lesions occur on the head and neck region, and their size may range from 0.5~3 cm. Since a chondroid syringoma presents similar characteristics to other masses on the head and neck region, it is significantly important to distinguish with other masses by a surgical biopsy. Methods: A 51-year old woman presented with a painless nodular mass ($0.5{\times}0.5{\times}0.5cm$) on the philtrum, which appeared during the previous year. The mass was treated with a laser without a surgical biopsy. However, the size of the mass showed no changes. Surgical excision under local anesthesia was performed and sent for histopathology. Results: Gross examination showed a mass surrounded by a well developed capsule within the dermal layer. After complete excision without injury to the orbicularis oris muscle, the wound was covered with a local flap. The histology examination revealed numerous cuboid epithelial cells with tuboalveolar structures and keratinous cysts within a chondroid stroma. No recurrence or metastasis was observed at the follow-up visits. Conclusion: Chondroid syringoma is a rare mass on the face. An accurate diagnosis is essential for optimal treatment. This paper reports a case of a chondroid syringoma on the philtrum with a brief review of the relevant literature.
