In this study, herbal wood vinegar including Bambusoideae, Cinnamomi Cortex, Zingiberis Rhizoma was tested to see possibility for cosmetic or skin related medicine. Anti-oxidation effect of herbal wood vinegar was tested by DPPH free radical scavenging activity, and showed 97% inhibition rate at $50{\mu}g/ml$. Anti-bacterial effect was tested by disc diffusion method, and it indicated strong anti-bacterial activity against normal skin flora Staphylococcus aureus. Whitening effect was measured by tyrosinase inhibition assay, and it was lower compared with vitamin C. Stability test was done by MTT assay, and cell toxicity was relatively high. Stability was also checked, and there was not significant change in color, aroma, appearance and pH during storage. Anti-atopic dermatitis test was done by hairless mouse and herbal wood vinegar recovered damaged skin to almost normal condition after 9 days of application. IgE concentration in herbal wood vinegar treated mouse was also reduced 30% compared with control. From the study, herbal wood vinegar showed good anti-oxidation, anti-bacterial and anti-atopic dermatitis effect, and had promising application in cosmetic or skin related medicine.
The in vitro antibacterial activities of honeybee(Apis mellifera. L) venom collected by a bee venom collector were investigated against several bacteria including antibiotic-susceptible and resistant Propionibacterium acnes. Honeybee venom was prepared with different concentrations and they showed strong antibacterial activites. Honeybee venom inhibited the growth of the tested antibiotic-resistant P. acnes at the concentration of 1 mg/ml. The inhibitory activities of the honeybee venom showed time-dependent manner. Honeybee venom did not influence the viability of human dermal fibroblast at the high concentration of less than 10 mg/ml. From these results, we expect that honeybee venom has strong antibacterial activities and has advantage for treating cure.
Acne, one of the most common skin disease, is a chronic inflammatory disease and is caused by uncertain and multiple factors. Propionibacterium acnes belongs to the human cutaneous normal flora and is a major etiologic agent of acne vulgaris. In this study, we evaluated the antibacterial effect of 19 medicinal plants. Antibacterial activity of extracts prepared from the 19 medicinal plants was investigated against bacteria related to acnes, Propionibacterium acnes. Among them, some medicinal plants inhibited the growth of the P. acnes. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of Polygonum aviculare (Herb) was 0.2 mg/ml against P. acnes. MIC of Dianthus chinensis (Aerial Part), Forsythia viridissima (Fruit), Lygodium japonicum (Spore) and Sophora flavescens (Root) were 0.4 mg/ml. Based on these results, Polygonum aviculare (Herb), Dianthus chinensis (Aerial Part), Forsythia viridissima (Fruit), Lygodium japonicum (Spore) and Sophora flavescens (Root) may be considered as a candidate for a good medicine for acne.
Lipsticks are cosmetics which do not contain water and are usually preserved with parabens. When submitted to the Challenge Test, theses products did not reach the CTFA criteria, which means that microbiological contamination could occur before the end of its shelf life. The aim of this study was to evaluate the contamination level of 130 lipsticks after its use. Microorganisms were isolated from 14,6 % of the samples. However, only in two samples (1,5%) the contamination level exceeded the 100 CFU/g level, which means that, although the preservative system was not efficient to eliminate bacteria, the lack of free water was enough to prevent the microbial development. Total bacteria and fungi were determined by conventional methodology, according to CTFA Microbiological Guidelines. The microbes were then isolated and characterized as normal skin flora microorganisms. This suggest that products were contaminated by the constant application of lipsticks by consumers. This could lead to cross contamination when the same product is shared by several people. Extra care should be taken into account when this type of products are available to be tested by several consumers in demonstration displays.
The most common and the most serious complication of the burn is infection, which is to a certain extent inevitable in the light of present knowledge and experience. From the burn wound as a rule there may be cultured at any given time the prevailing flora of the individual patient and of the hospital attendants and ward environ ment. Even without contamination from outside sources, organisms embedded in hair follicles and sweat glands survive the sterilizing effects of heat and serve as potential sources of localized and systemic infection. With necrotic tissue serving as nutrient material for pathogens there may occur, in succession, cellulitis, extending necrosis, lymphangitis and final septicemia. This is to report a case of osteomyelitis due to facial burn of 32 year old Korean male. The authors treated the patient by curettage and thin split thickness skin graft. The post operative course was uncomplicated and result was excellent.

Cutibacterium acnes (formerly Propionibacterium acnes) is an anaerobic, Gram-positive rod and that is a normal flora of human skin and mucosal surface as well as an opportunistic pathogen related to acnes vulgaris, sarcoidosis, brain abscess, endocarditis, periodontitis, and endodontic infections. C. acnes KCOM 1861 (= ChDC B594) was isolated from a human jaw osteomyelitis lesion. Here, we present the complete genome sequence of C. acnes KCOM 1861.
Objectives : This paper aimed to verify the applicability of mixed extract ofAngelica gigasNakai,Cnidium officinaleMakino,Paeoniala ctifloraPall,Rechmannia glutinosaLibosch,Scutellaria baicalensisGeorgi, which were prescribed for improving inflammation in Donguibogam, as the materials for beauty food and functional medicinal herb cosmetics by manufacturing such mixed extract and evaluating the biological activity of the extract. Methods : The mixed medicinal herb water extract(MMW) and ethanol extract(MME) were freeze-dried to be used as the specimen. We performed electron donating ability, lipid acidification inhibitory activity, anti-inflammatory activity against skin flora, MTT assay, NO inhibitory activity and the protein expression inhibitory activity of iNOS and COX-2.Results : For anti-oxidation experimentation, the electron donating abilities of MMW and MME were above 60.0% and 90.0% at 500 μg/ml, respectively. In the inhibition rate of lipid peroxidation, MMW and MME showed 43.1% and 52.1% at 1,000 μg/ml, respectively. As a result of antimicrobial activity, both the MMW and MME showed significant clear zones forPropionibacterium acnesat 4 mg/disc, but did not indicated the clearzones forStaphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coliandStaphylococcus epidermidis. Anti-inflammatory activity by NO assay showed LPS-induced NO was significantly inhibited in a concentration-dependent manner. Also, the expression of iNOS and COX-2 proteins were significantly inhibited following treatment with MMW and MME of 50 μg/ml.Conclusions : Accordingly, it can be concluded that mixed medicinal herb extract has the potential to beused as a functional food and cosmetic material.

Klebsiella pneumoniae is a gram-negative, non-motile, rod-shaped, and encapsulated bacterium in the normal flora of the intestines, mouth, skin, and food, and has decarboxylation activity, which results in generation of diamines (cadaverine, agmatine, and putrescine). However, there is no specific information on the exact mechanism of decarboxylation in K. pnuemoniae. Specifically lysine decarboxylases that generate cadaverine with a wide range of applications has not been shown. Therefore, we performed a functional study of lysine decarboxylases. Enzymatic characteristics such as optimal pH, temperature, and substrates were examined by overexpressing and purifying CadA and LdcC. CadA and LdcC from K. pneumoniae had a preference for L-lysine, and an optimal reaction temperature of 37℃ and an optimal pH of 7. Although the activity of purified CadA from K. pneumoniae was lower than that of CadA from E. coli, the activity of K. pneumoniae CadA in whole cell bioconversion was comparable to that of E. coli CadA, resulting in 90% lysine conversion to cadaverine with pyridoxal 5'-phosphate L-lysine.
In this study, the Rhus chinensis Mill was divided into bark and inner bark. The antimicrobial activity and the antioxidative activity of the extracts were investigated by using the organic solvent fractions after the extraction and concentration with ethanol. This study showed the possibility of functional materials such as raw materials for cosmetics and food supplements. This study was the antimicrobial activity and antioxidant activity of five microorganisms (S. aureus, E. coli, B. subtilis, P. aeruginosa, and P. ovale). The following conclusions were obtained. First, the antimicrobial activity of B. subtilis was found to be high in the ethanol extract of. Second, DPPH scavenging activity was 86.4% free radical scavenging activity at 2.5 mg/mL bark part and 61.9% free radical scavenging activity at 2.5 mg/mL in inner Rhus chinensis Mill bark part. The ABTS scavenging activity was 79.2% free radical scavenging at 1 mg/mL bark fraction and 63% free radical scavenging activity at 1 mg/mL in inner bark, and bark showed higher antioxidant activity than inner bark. These results suggested that the antimicrobial activity and antioxidant activity of Rhus chinensis Mill extract can be used as a natural material. Specific and diverse physiological activity studies are expected in the future.
Staphylococcus epidermidis is a part of the normal skin flora of humans. However, it can cause serious infections in people exposed to foreign bodies or in immunocompromised patients. A 13-year-old boy was hospitalized with fever and myalgia. Painful nodular lesions were detected on the scalp, arms, and legs. Pancytopenia and blasts were present in the peripheral blood. He was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia. Magnetic resonance imaging of the whole body showed multiple peripheral rim-enhancing, cyst-like lesions. Ultrasonography showed echogenic nodules inside the cystic lesions in the intramuscular space of the arms and legs. Therefore, cysticercosis was strongly suggested initially. However, an abscess was confirmed on sono-guided biopsy and S. epidermidis was isolated from a microbial culture of the tissue. We report a case of multiple disseminated lesions caused by S. epidermidis in a leukemia patient, initially mistaken for cysticercosis.
