  • Nowadays, interests of ultraviolet(UV) protection increased, since the UV dosage on the earth surface has increased over years. Overdose of UV can cause various skin, eye, and even DNA damages. Therefore, it is need to develop a proper mean to protect human skin and eye from UV radiation. In this study, the UV protective effect of green tea extract dyed fabrics with various fiber types were examined. Green tea has an active moiety called 'catechin' having benzene rings in its structure, which would exert a proper UV protective property. Green tea dyed fabrics showed the increase in UV protection, and silk showed the highest increase in UV protection (from 52.2% to 84.5% in UV-A, from 66.1% to 90% in UV-B). The order of UV-A protection increase is silk, wool, nylon and acrylic, PET, and cotton. The order of UV-B protection increase is silk nylon, wool, acrylic, cotton, and PET. In case of silk and nylon, the UV protection property gradually increased as the concentration of green tea extract increased. As a result, it was proven that green tea extract dyeing can improve UV protection property of dyed fabrics in environment-friendly and biocompatible manners.

  • This study was conducted to elucidate the relationship between light and coloring and to obtain basic results for promoting redness expression in 'Kalle' (Pyrus communis L.) pear skin. It was investigated in location of anthocyanin layer by microscopic observation and differences in skin color expression of 'Kalle' bagged with paper bag which has different light transmittance rate and inside temperature. However, there was no anthocyanin layer in the brown skin and golden yellow color, anthocyanin layer was distributed in epidermins or hyperdermis of red skin pear and apple. Dark red colored 'Kalle' had more anthocyanin content, $29.8mg{\cdot}100g^{-1}$ FW than light red colored apple 'Hongro'. Light transmittance rate of physical characteristics used paper bags was the highest in white paper bag, 42.2% and it also had more light quantity, $8.9{\mu}mol$ than any other tested paper bags in specific wave length 650-655 nm. The maximum temperature of inner bag was higher about $3^{\circ}C$ in yellow paper bag. The red coloration and anthocyanin contents in no bagged fruits were higher than in any other bagged fruit. However, red color expression among the bagged fruits was higher in white paper bag than in double layered black paper bag and yellow paper bag. Also, chromaticity value seemd to be a good index to explain variation of fruit skin color, because anthocyanin content and chromaticity value were higher. Based on these results, it is desirable to cultivate 'Kalle' without bag for stable redness expression but bagging is essential for decreasing damage by insect in Korea. Further examination to find suitable time of removing paperbag for redness expression and decreasing insect damage. In addition, it is required to develop paperbag whose transmittance rate is high in specific light wavelength or temperature of inner bags is low. Additional key words: anthocyanin, bagging, chromaticity value, light transmittance, Pyrus communis L.

  • A methacrylate monomer having phospholipid polar group and cell membrane structure is known as highly biocompatible. Based on these properties, new biocompatible multi-functional textile finishing agent was developed using phospolipid copolymer. 2-Methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPCE) was synthesized using 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA), 2-chloro-2-oxo-1,3,2-dioxaphospholane (COP) and triethylamine (TEA), and then polymerized to prepare MPCE copolymer by radical polymerization using azobisisobutyronitrile(AIBN). The structures of MPCE was characterized by FT-IR and 1H NMR and will be evaluated as textile finishing agent in further study.

  • In this work, ultrafiltration(UF) membranes were prepared using polyethersulfone(PES). The polymer was dissolved in various solvent, such as N, N-dimethyl formamide(DMF), N,-dimethyl acetamide (DMAc), N,N-dimethyl sulfoxide(DMSO) and N-methyl-2- pynolidone(NMP). Each polymer solution was casted on the glass plate, and immersed into non-solvent bath. In this way finely porous UF membranes were prepared by phase inversion method. The cross sectional structure of PES membrane was asymmetric which was consist of sponge-like sublayer, finger-like toplayer, and active skin layer. From the solute rejection experiments, the molecular weight cut off of the prepared membrane in various solvent was evaluated 10,000 for DMF, 30,000 for DMAc, 50,000 for DMSO, and 10,000 for NMP respectively.

  • The body color pattern in fish is a distinctive feature for species identification. The blass bloched rockfish Sebastes pachycephalus is a commercially important marine fish species, distributed in the central and southern parts of Korea and south Hokkaido of Japan. It has a morphological feature divided into four subspecies according to with or lacking distinct spots on the body surface, and to the location of markings on the body surface. However, the genetic basis of body color pattern of S. pachycephalus is still unknown. Thus we analyzed the transcriptome of S. pachycephalus skin samples using RNA-seq analysis to investigate functional genes related to body color patterns. The experimental skin samples were prepared by classified into 'Wild type' (lacking distinct spots and markings) and 'Color type' (with distinct spots and marking). Two skin sample transcriptomes were compared pairwise and the results revealed that were 164 differentially expressed unigenes in the skin samples of 'Wild type' and 'Color type'. Gene Ontology analysis of 164 differentially expressed unigenes showed that these genes were included in the functional group of molecular function (2 genes), biological process (46 genes), and cellular component (6 genes). There were several genes that body color type skin specific expression and the genes were CTL (Galactose-specific lectin nattectin), CUL1 (Cullin-1), CMAS (N-acylneuraminate cytidylyltransferase), NMRK2 (Nicotinamide riboside kinase 2), ALOXE3 (Hydroperoxide isomerase ALOXE3), SLC4A7 (sodium bicarbonate cotransporter 3). Our study is the first attempt to search for functional genes involved in the formation of body color patterns in S. pachycephalus. The differentially expressed unigenes obtained in this study can be used as candidate genes for functional gene study related to body coloration of fish.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of dietary supplementation of paprika and spirulina as carotenoid sources with three different levels on survival and skin color development of swiri. Fish (initial mean weight 4.4 g) were fed the diets containing different levels of paprika (2, 5 and 10%), spirulina (5, 10 and 20%) and mixture of 5% paprika and 10% spirulina and without supplementation (con) for 9 weeks. Survival of fish fed diets containing the various levels of spirulina was 100% and higher than that of fish fed the other diets. Total carotenoid contents of the skin and fin in fish fed the diets containing the various levels of paprika and spirulina were higher than those in fish fed the control diet. Total carotenoid contents of skin and fin in fish fed the diets containing 5% and 10% paprika tended to be higher than that in fish fed the diet containing 2% paprika. Total carotenoid contents of fish fed the diets containing 10% and 20% spirulina tended to be higher than that of fed the diet containing 5% spirulina. The apparent color definition of skin and fin in fish fed the diets containing paprika and spirulina was better than fish fed the control diet. The results of this study suggest that dietary supplementation with paprika and spirulina can improve skin coloration of swiri.

  • High temperature is one of the important environmental factors limiting cultivation of apple (Malus domestica Borkh). The expression of genes related with anthocyanin synthesis and sugar accumulation in response to high temperature was studied in the 'Hongro' apple fruits at different developmental stages in different temperature conditions through real-time PCR. Expression of ${\hat{a}}$-amylase (BMY) and polygalacturonase (PG) genes related with sugar synthesis was higher in late ripening stages than in initial ripening stages. Expression of four genes such as phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL), chalcone synthase (CHS), flavanone 3-hydroxylase (F3H), and malate dehydrogenase (MDH), which were related with fruit skin coloration, increased gradually in apple fruits of the middle and late ripening stages. Interestingly, the expressions of all genes were highly inhibited expressed at $30-35^{\circ}C$ compared to $25^{\circ}C$ in all ripening stages. In the further work, investigation of expression levels of various genes could be conducted in the level of transcriptomics in fruits at the middle ripening stages to get meaningful information of ripening metabolism in apple in high temperatures.
