Influence of aspect ratio and fibre orientation on the stability of simply supported orthotropic skew plates

  • In this paper, the influence of fibre orientation and aspect ratio on stability analysis of simply supported skew plates subjected to in plane loading is studied by using a four noded hybrid plate finite element. The formulation of the element is based on Hellinger-Reissner variational principle. The element is developed by combining a hybrid plane stress element and a hybrid plate element. Some numerical problems are solved and the effects of skew angle, aspect ratio, fibre orientation and loading type on the critical buckling loads are highlighted.

Free vibration of laminated composite skew plates with central cutouts

  • We performed a free vibration analysis of skew composite laminates with or without cutout based on the high-order shear deformation plate theory (HSDT). The effects of skew angles and ply orientations on the natural frequencies for various boundary conditions are studied using a nonlinear high-order finite element program developed for this study. The numerical results are in good agreement with those reported by other investigators for simple test cases, and the new results reported in this paper show the interactions between the skew angle, layup sequence and cutout size on the free vibration of the laminate. The findings highlight the importance of skew angles when analyzing laminated composite skew plates with cutout or without cutout.

  • In his invited lecture presented during the First Conference of the Mathematical Society of the Republic of Moldova($Chi\c{s}in\v{a}u$, August 2001) W. A. Dudek posed several open problems on the role and properties of the skew element in the theory of n-ary groups. In this note we give the partial solutions of some of these problems.

Analysis of Bending Behavior of Skew Concrete Slab Bridges (콘크리트 슬래브 사교의 휨거동 해석)

  • In this paper, we present the results of finite element analyses pertaining to the mechanical behavior of simply supported skew concrete slab bridges. To investigate the bending behavior of skew concrete slab three skewed slabs are modelled with different plate aspect ratios. In each modelled skew plate, skew angles are varied from 0$^{\circ}$to 45$^{\circ}$ by 5$^{\circ}$interval. It is found that the support reactions at the obtuse corner are remarkably higher than the other support reactions. In the design of skew slab bridge bearings, the capacity of bearing installed at the obtuse corner should be very high or otherwise the spacing between the bearings at this corner must be adjusted appropriately to resist extra high reactions.

  • In this paper. the characteristics of mechanical behaviour due to various edge-ratio of uniformly loaded clamped skew-~plates has been described. In this study, the skew-plate was discretized using 8-noded isoparametric element and Mindlin's plate theory was adapted in finite element formulation. The edge-ratio 0.5,0.8,1.0,1.2,1.5,2.0 and 2.5 were considered. Hence, five cond- itions of the skew-angle, the seven levels of edge ratio were tried. When the edge-ratio was 2.5 or the edge-ratio was 2.0 and the skew-angle was less than 45 degree, the behaviour of the uniformly loaded the skew-plate with all edges clamped was independent of the skew-angle.

  • This study presents a suggestion of regulation of skewed slab bridge. In order to find the characteristic behavior of skew bridge, many cases of skew bridges were analyzed with changed angle of skew. The comparison of design methods for cantilever part in pier was also made. It was found that : (1) The lower the skew angle was, the higher the maximum support reaction forces at the end point were. (2) The higher the ratio of L/B was, the higher the maximum support reaction force at the point was. (3) The effect of skew may be neglected for skew angles of $70^{\circ}$or more. (4) If elastic springs are applied to the boundary conditions to simulate the rubber pad bearings, the results will be more reasonable. (5) The shear deformation effect must be considered in the analysis of cantilever part of substructure. (6) Using strut and tie model to design cantilever part of pier, it will be more simple than finite element method with same accuracy and more accurate than using frame element.

  • This paper deals with skew and overhang effects of permanent magnet linear synchronous motor(PMLSM). The detent force and thrust characteristics considering skew and overhang effects of permanent magnet are analyzed by 3D finite element method and the results are compared to experimental values. As skew and overhang are applied to permanent magnet, the thrust is almost the same value but the detent force is reduced remarkably. By harmonic analysis, the distortion ratio of thrust is remarkably reduced from 4.29[%] to 2.3[%]. and, the ripple ratio of thrust is decreased from 8.2[%] to 3.56[%] at the same time. But, the lateral force which operate as the perpendicular direction of skew direction is generated. The lateral force and normal force acts by braking force between mover and LM-guide.

Free vibration and static analysis of functionally graded skew magneto-electro-elastic plate

  • This article presents a finite element (FE) model to assess the free vibration and static response of a functionally graded skew magneto-electro-elastic (FGSMEE) plate. Through the thickness material grading of FGSMEE plate is achieved using power law distribution. The coupled constitutive equations along with the total potential energy approach are used to develop the FE model of FGSMEE plate. The transformation matrix is utilized in bringing out the element matrix corresponding to the global axis to a local axis along the skew edges to specify proper boundary conditions. The effect of skew angle on the natural frequency of an FGSMEE plate is analysed. Further, the study includes the evaluation of the static behavior of FGSMEE plate for various skew angles. The influence of skew angle on the primary quantities such as displacements, electric potential, and magnetic potential, and secondary quantities such as stresses, electric displacement and magnetic induction is studied in detail. In addition, the effect of power-law gradient, thickness ratio, boundary conditions and aspect ratio on the free vibration and static response characteristics of FGSMEE plate has been investigated.

A new hierarchic degenerated shell element for geometrically non-linear analysis of composite laminated square and skew plates

  • This paper extends the use of the hierarchic degenerated shell element to geometric non-linear analysis of composite laminated skew plates by the p-version of the finite element method. For the geometric non-linear analysis, the total Lagrangian formulation is adopted with moderately large displacement and small strain being accounted for in the sense of von Karman hypothesis. The present model is based on equivalent-single layer laminate theory with the first order shear deformation including a shear correction factor of 5/6. The integrals of Legendre polynomials are used for shape functions with p-level varying from 1 to 10. A wide variety of linear and non-linear results obtained by the p-version finite element model are presented for the laminated skew plates as well as laminated square plates. A numerical analysis is made to illustrate the influence of the geometric non-linear effect on the transverse deflections and the stresses with respect to width/depth ratio (a/h), skew angle (${\beta}$), and stacking sequence of layers. The present results are in good agreement with the results in literatures.

Response of Skew Bridges with permutations of geometric parameters and bearings articulation

  • Understanding the behavior of skew bridges under the action of earthquakes is quite challenging due to the combined transverse and longitudinal responses even under unidirectional hit. The main goal of this research is to assess the response of skew bridges when subjected to longitudinal and transversal earthquake loading. The effect of skew on the response considering two- and three- span bridges with skew angles varying from 0 to 60 degrees is illustrated. Various pier fixities (and hence stiffness) and cross-section shapes, as well as different abutment's bearing articulations, are also studied. Finite-element models are established for modal and seismic analyses. Around 900 models are analyzed under the action of the code design response spectrum. $Vis-{\grave{a}}-vis$ modal properties, the higher the skew angle, the less the fundamental period. In addition, it is found that bridges with skew angles less than 30 degrees can be treated as straight bridges for the purpose of calculating modal mass participation factors. Other monitored results are bearings' reactions at abutments, shear and torsion demand in piers, as well as deck longitudinal displacement. Unlike straight bridges, it has been typically noted that skew bridges experience non-negligible torsion and bi-directional pier base shears. In a complementary effort to assess the accuracy of the conducted response spectrum analysis, a series of time-history analyses are applied under seven actual earthquake records scaled to match the code design response spectrum and critical comparisons are performed.
