  • Modified couple stress formulation and first order shear deformation theory are used for magneto-electro-elastic bending analysis of three-layered curved size-dependent beam subjected to mechanical, magnetic and electrical loads. The governing equations are derived using a displacement field including radial and transverse displacements of middle surface and a rotation component. Size dependency is accounted based on modified couple stress theory by employing a small scale parameter. The numerical results are presented to study the influence of small scale parameter, initial electric and magnetic potentials and opening angle on the magneto-electro-elastic bending results of curved micro beam.

  • This paper concerns with free torsional vibration analysis of size dependent circular nanobars with von kármán type nonlinearity. Although review of the literature suggests several studies employing nonlocal elasticity theory to investigate linear torsional behavior, linear/nonlinear transverse vibration and buckling of the nanoscale structures, so far, no study on the nonlinear torsional behavior of the nanobars, considering the size effect, has been reported. This study employs nonlocal elasticity theory along with a variational approach to derive nonlinear equation of motion of the nanobar. Then, the nonlinear equation is solved using the elliptic functions to extract the natural frequencies of the structure under fixed-fixed and fixed-free end conditions. Finally, the natural frequencies of the nanobar under different nanobar lengths, diameters, nonlocal parameters, and amplitudes of vibration are reported to illustrate the effect of these parameters on the vibration characteristics of the nanobars. In addition, the phase plane diagrams of the nanobar for various cases are reported.

  • This research explores the domain of organic solar cells, a photovoltaic technology employing organic electronics, which encompasses small organic molecules and conductive polymers for efficient light absorption and charge transport, leading to electricity generation from sunlight. A computer simulation is employed to scrutinize resonance and dynamic stability in OSCs, with a focus on size effects introduced by nonlocal strain gradient theory, incorporating additional terms in the governing equations related to displacement and time. Initially, the Navier method serves as an analytical solver to delve into the dynamics of design points. The accuracy of this initial step is verified through a meticulous comparison with high-quality literature. The findings underscore the substantial impact of viscoelastic foundations, size-dependent parameters, and geometric factors on the stability and dynamic deflection of OSCs, with a noteworthy emphasis on the amplified influence of size-dependent parameters in higher values of the different layers' thicknesses.

  • We have proposed a method for estimating the size-dependent mortality (M) of short-lived semelparous cephalopod species. To estimate the size-dependent mortality of a winter cohort of the common squid Todarodes pacificus, a commercially important cephalopod species in the North Pacific, we used the data and results of previous studies. On the basis of the bigger-is-better the steady-state hypothesis, we derived a theoretical mortality curve by assuming M as an inverse function of mantle length (ML). The derived constant for size-specific instantaneous mortality (q), assuming an embryonic survival rate of 86.6%, was 0.413 day-1 mm in ML. Estimates of life-stage-specific M ranged from 0.0280 to 0.435 day-1 for paralarvae, 0.00278 to 0.0269 day-1 for juveniles, 0.00197 to 0.00275 day-1 for pre-spawning adults, and 0.0913 to 0.0920 day-1 for post-spawning adults. Sensitivity analyses showed that the derived size-dependent M did not significantly change with varying embryonic survival rates, from 48%, the lowest reported value, to 100%. Additionally, comparison of the length frequencies derived from our simulations with those derived from catch data did not show a significant difference, suggesting that our approach and procedures are reliable for stock assessment and management of the common squid.

  • We present a transient queue size distribution for $M/G/m/N$ queue with state dependent arrival rates, using the diffusion process with piecewise constant diffusion parameters, with state space [0, N] and elementary return boundaries at x = 0 and x = N. The model considered here contains not only many basic model but the practical models such as as two-node cyclic queue, repairmen model and overload control in communication system with finite storage buffer. For the accuracy check, we compare the approximation results with the exact and simulation results.

  • The effects of particle size distribution on the magnetorheological response of inverse ferrofluids was investigated using controlled mixtures of two monodisperse non-magnetisable powders of sizes $4.6\;{\mu}m\;and\;80{\mu}m$ at constant volume fraction of 30%, subjected to large amplitude oscillatory shear flow. In the linear viscoelastic regime (pre-yield region), it was found that the storage and loss moduli were dependent on the particle size as well as the proportion of small particles, with the highest storage modulus occurring for the monodisperse small particles. In the nonlinear regime (post yield region), Fourier analysis was used to compare the behaviour of the $1^{st}\;and\;3^{rd}$ harmonics ($I_{1}\;and\;I_{3}\;respectively$) as well as the fundamental phase angle as functions of the applied strain amplitude. The ratio of $I_{3}/I_{1}$ was found to become more pronounced with decreasing particle size as well as with increasing proportion of small particles in the bidisperse mixtures. Furthermore, the phase angle was able to clearly show the transition from solid-like to viscous behaviour. The results suggested that the nonlinear response of a bidisperse IFF is dependent on particle size as well as the proportion of small particles in the system.

  • Some researchers pointed out that the nonlocal cantilever models do not predict the dynamic softening behavior for nanostructures (including nanobeams) with clamped-free (CF) ends. In contrast, some indicate that the nonlocal cantilever models can capture the stiffness softening characteristics. There are substantial differences on this issue between them. The vibration analysis of porosity-dependent functionally graded nanoscale tubes with variable boundary conditions is investigated in this study. Using a modified power-law model, the tube's porosity-dependent material coefficients are graded in the radial direction. The theory of nonlocal strain gradients is used. Hamilton's principle is used to derive the size-dependent governing equations for simply-supported (S), clamped (C) and clamped-simply supported (CS). Following the solution of these equations by the extended differential quadrature technique, the effect of various factors on vibration issues was investigated further. It can be shown that these factors have a considerable effect on the vibration characteristics. It also can be found that our numerical results can capture the unexpected softening phenomena for cantilever tubes.

  • Analytical models for the prediction of the size of hardened zone in laser surface hardening are presented. The models are based on the solutions to the problem of three-dimensional heat flow in plates with infinite thickness. The validity of the model was tested on medium carbon steel for Gaaussian mode of beam. Then the model for rectangular beam was used for the prediction of the size of harened zone on various hardening process parameters. From the calculation results it appeared that the size and shape of the hardened zone are strongly dependent on process parameters suchas beam mode, beam size, and traverse speed.

  • Citri Reticulatae Viride Pericarpium extract(CRVP) have been used in oriental medicine for many centuries as a therapeutic agent for smoothing the liver and regulating the circulation of qi, and promoting digestion and removing stagnated food. The effects of CRVP on the inhibition of brain damage in cerebral ischemia is not known. Therefore, this Study was designed to investigate the cerebral protective effects of CRVP on the transient cerebral ischemia using modern techniques, and further to provide the possibility of scientification of oriental medicine. The size of cerebral infarct size was measured by morphometry, and brain edema was measured by morphometry and brain water content determination. The results were a$ follows ; 1. Water fraction of CRVP was reduced infect area of rats brain slices which were subjected to a transient cerebral ischemia in a dose-dependent manner. 2. Methylene chloride fraction and hexane fraction of CRVP was significantly reduced infarct area of rats brain slices which were subjected to a transient cerebral ischemia in a dose-dependent manner. 3. Methylene chloride fraction and hexane fraction of CRVP was significantly reduced infarct volume of rats brain which was subjected to a transient cerebral ischemia in a dose-dependent manner. 4. Methylene Chloride fraction and hexane fraction of CRVP was significantly decreased brain edema induced by a transient cerebral ischemia in a dose-dependent manner. 5. Methylene chloride fraction and hexane fraction of CRVP was significantly decreased brain water content of rats which were subjected to a transient cerebral ischemia. It is suggested that CRVP has an anti-ischemic effect through the inhibition of brain damage in a transient cerebral ischemia, and that in future further development of main effective constituent in CRVP can provide a novel therapeutic strategy for cerebral ischemia.
