  • The scale effect should be considered to determine the bearing capacity and settlement of footings from plate-load test, because of the size difference between a footing and a loading plate. To analyze characteristics of bearing capacity and settlement according to the difference of loading plate sizes, model tests were performed with four different sizes of square plate, which are B=10, 15, 20, and 25cm respectively, on five different kinds of subsoils. Test results showed that the ultimate bearing capacity of a footing on the sand did not increase proportional to the traditional formula and the bearing capacity on the clay also increased a little with increasing the size of loading plate. The settlement of test plate on the sand did not increase as the traditional formula of Terzaghi and Peck (1967), and the settlement on the clay also did not increase proportional to the traditional formula.

  • In this paper, we suggested user assistant soft computing method for 3D effect optimization. In order to maximize 3D effect of image, intervals among cameras have to be set up properly according to distance between cameras and an object. Two data such as interval and distance was obtained to use in neural network as the data for learning. However, if the data for learning was obtained by only human's subjective views, it could be that the obtained data was not optimal for learning because the data had an accidental ewer To obtain optimal data lot learning, we added candidature data to obtained data through data analysis, and then selected the most proper data between the candidature data and the obtained data for learning in neural network. Usually, 3D effect of image was affected by both distance from an object to cameras and an object size. Therefore, we suggested fuzzy inference model which was able to represent two factors like distance and size. Candidature data was added by fuzzy model. In the simulation result, we verified that the mote the obtained data was affected by human's subjective views, the more effective the suggested system was.

  • With the development of spatial structures, the joints are becoming more and more complex to connect tubular members of spatial structures. In this study, an approach is proposed to establish high-efficiency finite element model of multiplanar KTX-joint with the weld geometries accurately simulated. Ultimate bearing capacity the KTX-joint is determined by the criterion of deformation limit and failure mechanism of chord wall buckling is studied. Size effect of fillet weld on the joint ultimate bearing capacity is preliminarily investigated. Based on the validated finite element model, a parametric study is performed to investigate the effects of geometric and loading parameters of KT-plane brace members on ultimate bearing capacity of the KTX-joint. The effect mechanism is revealed and several design suggestions are proposed. Several simple reinforcement methods are adopted to constrain the chord wall buckling. It is concluded that the finite element model established by proposed approach is capable of simulating static behaviors of multiplanar KTX-joint; chord wall buckling with large indentation is the typical failure mode of multiplanar KTX-joint, which also increases chord wall displacements in the axis directions of brace members in orthogonal plane; ultimate bearing capacity of the KTX-joint increases approximately linearly with the increase of fillet weld size within the allowed range; the effect mechanism of geometric and loading parameters are revealed by the assumption of restraint region and interaction between adjacent KT-plane brace members; relatively large diameter ratio, small overlapping ratio and small included angle are suggested for the KTX-joint to achieve larger ultimate bearing capacity; the adopted simple reinforcement methods can effectively constrain the chord wall buckling with the design of KTX-joint converted into design of uniplanar KT-joint.

  • High-frequency(40∼120 kHz) reflection loss measurements on the water-sandy sediment with a flat interface were conducted in a water tank for various grazing angles. The water tank(5×5×5 m) was filled with a 0.5 m-thick-flat bottom of 0.5ø-mean-grain-size sand. Reflection losses, which were experimentally obtained as a function of grazing angle and frequency, were compared with the forward loss model, APL-UW model (Mourad & Jackson, 1989). For frequencies below 60 kHz, the observed losses well agree with the reflection loss model, however, in cases for frequencies above 70 kHz, the observed losses are greater by 2∼3 dB than the model results. The model calculation, which does not fully account for the vertical scale of roughness due to grain size, produce less bottom losses compared to the observations that correspond to large roughness based on the Rayleigh parameter in the wave scattering theory. In conclusion, for the same grain-size-sediment, as frequencies increase, the grainsize becomes the scale of roughness that could be very large for the frequencies above 70 kHz. Therefore, although the sea bottom was flat, we have to consider the frequency dependence of an effect of roughness within confidential interval of grain size distribution in reflection loss model.

  • This paper deals with the effect of concrete target size on penetration of projectiles. We investigated the penetration depth and residual velocity of projectiles using the 2-D axial symmetric model. Most analysis were conducted with 13 kg projectile (striking velocity: 456.4 m/s) and concrete target with compressive strength of 39 MPa. This paper provided penetration depth (or residual velocity) versus ratio D/d (target diameter, D and projectile diameter, d). When the bottom of concrete cylinder was constrained, penetration depth converged to limit depth more than the ratio D/d of 36. The residual velocity of projectile with thin concrete target were investigated. The residual velocity was converged to specific velocity more than the ratio D/d of 16.

  • Althouah there have been many attempts to control weld quality in resistance spot welding processes, design method for an on-line feedback controller based upon process dynamics has not been suggested. This is due to the fact that the resistance spot welding is a highly complicated process, whice involves the interaction of electrical, thermal, mechanical and metallurgical phenomena. In this paper, an optimal control method based on FDM model with shunt effect is presented, which can regulate the nugget size, at the same time minimizing the control heat input. Optimal PI gain of the controller were determined by numerical optimization. Simulation results show that, as a result of the proposed optimal control, the weld nugget can be made to approach a desired nugget size with less control heat input than that required for the conventional spot welding process in the face of the shunt effect.

  • In this paper, forced vibration of micro cylindrical shell reinforced by functionally graded carbon nanotubes (FG-CNTs) is presented. The structure is subjected to transverse harmonic load and modeled by beam model. The size effects are considered based on strain gradient theory containing three small scale parameters. The mixture rule is used for obtaining the effective material properties of the structure. Based on sinusoidal shear deformation theory of beam, energy method and Hamilton's principle, the motion equations are derived. Applying differential quadrature method (DQM) and Newmark method, the frequency curves of the structure are plotted. The effect of different parameters including, CNTs volume percent and distribution type, boundary conditions, size effect and length to thickness ratio on the frequency curves of the structure is studied. Numerical results indicate that the dynamic deflection of the FGX-CNT-reinforced cylindrical is lower with respect to other type of CNT distribution.

  • In this study, we examine the effect of TRIPS on the relationship between R&D expenditures and patent applications in manufacturing firms. The first set of tests examines the association between patent applications and R&D expenditures and firm specific factors such as firm size and capital intensity. The next set of tests adds environmental factors including R&D intensity of the industry and development of TRIPS. We divide the sample period into three subperiods according to the progress of TRIPS subperiod 1(1984-1988) before TRIPS, subperiod 2(1989-1994) after negotiation of TRIPS and subperiod 3(1995-2000) after agreement on TRIPS. Regression model reveals that the coefficient on firm size is significantly positive over the all sample Period, while that of R&D expenditures of R&D intensive firms is significantly positive in subperiod 2 and 3(1989-2000) and that of capital intensity is significantly negative only in subperiod 3(1995-2000). The findings suggest that the efficient intellectual property system promotes the patent application of R&D intensive firms.
