  • The main aim of the paper is to reveal what is the sign in art and architecture and what is difference between technology and art. By keeping in mind the suggestions of Heidegger's four different worlds, we become able to discern or elaborate on four different contexts of signs and modes in which the sign can work. World (1) is not conceptualized by selected relations of some of things' aspects with one another; rather, it is constructed by our sensory impressions. The sign of World (1) simply points to other objects occurring in the situation. World (2) emerges as an ontological term, and signifies, in terms of relations that are now brought systematically forth, the Being of those entities of World (1) which we naively perceive or take for granted. The sign of World (2) signifies a constructed world. World (3) is understood as the 'wherein' or environment of beings whose total activity is proven to be inseparable from their circumstances. The sign of World (3) is to recover the perspicuous silence of World (3). The World (4) is the ontological-existential understanding of worldhood. The sign of World (4) is to reveal the conspicuous silence of World (4). Finally, the paper suggests that art including architecture cannot be the sign of World (1), (2) but the one of World (3).

  • A few archeological excavation of Buddhist temple sites of Koguryo were reported with information of site arrangement. The interpretation of such information is very important not only for the explanation of Korea early Buddhist architecture but also for the development of East Asian cases in general since no archeological evidences of the same period were found in other countries such as China. Though the investigation of the four temple sites this paper attempt to identify their date of construction and the process of change. The study depended much on comparative studies of the change of site elements such as pagoda, image hall., corridor, and other buildings. The study could conclude that the site of SangO-Ri must be the earliest case which was followed by ChungRung-Sa, which was built in around 427AD. The site of ToSung-Ri was the case which was the work of the rate 5th century. Such process of the development of Buddhist architecture in Koguryo unveils the fact that the process of change was a continuous flow toward a consistent goal of change that had much to do with the contemporary religious situation.

  • Recently large scale earthquake s are occurred around the world following the damage of buildings. So the interest of preparing for earthquake seismic design and seismic performance has becoming high. School buildings are though used for educational purpose; they are also used as emergency shelter for local residents during earthquake disaster. However, the current seismic design ratio of our country (Korea) is 3.7% and if massive earthquake is occurred it follows a serious damage. In order to overcome this situation, seismic performance evaluation is carried out for existing school building and an accurate and appropriate seismic retrofit is required based on performance evaluation to upgrade the existing school buildings. In this paper, nonlinear static analysis on existing school buildings for ATC-40 and FEMA-356 are carried out using the capacity spectrum method to evaluate seismic performance and to determine the need for retrofitting. In addition, after reinforcement to verify the effect of retrofit enhance the seismic performance is applied the seismic performance evaluation is carried out to verify the effect of seismic retrofit time history analysis using nonlinear dynamic analysis is also performed and nonlinear behavior of earthquake load of seismic retrofit of structures was also investigated.

  • The main purpose of this paper is to show that the new paradigm of a period can be constructed by the reinterpretation of the historical precedents or the dialectical mediation between the old and new. We can tell this process the creative dialogue between the past and present. The continuity and rupture, the renovation and succession of the tradition can be understand by this interpretive insight that opens the new horizon in architecture. In oder to prove this preconception this paper analyses the ideas and design principles of Le Corbusier. By showing how his main ideas and principles are formulated we can understand his unique position as a modernist and characteristics of his architecture. It is also the another purpose of this paper. This paper first looks into various aspects of his architecture and his personal background, then Investigates his unique approach to historical precedents. By the imaginative eye and comparison with inspiration he connected contemporary situation to the tradition and was able to deduce a new paradigm in architecture. His way of making relationship with the past was a priori, dialectical, and fundamentalistic. He always searched for universal norm, eternal rules, and timeless principles which are also modern and new. This both side shows well his characteristics and his architecture. Eventually he could invent a Modern language of architecture by the several ways of dialogue between the modem and the classical, new technology and old convention. We can say that his way of dialogue is a kind of reinterpretation of the historical precedents which enables open the future of architecture.

Moreover, famous craftsmen obtained the government service. And there were various attempts on organizing and compensating workmen in order to manage them efficiently. In addition, the know-how of manufacturing a blue tile, which had been failed to succeed due to the war, was revived, and manufacturing a yellow tile, which had not been used, was studied by utilitarians. • A 2-year-old, female, American cocker spaniel dog presented for a 1-year history of severe ascites, exercise intolerance, tachypnea. At that time, she was in an emergency state. First, the dog was stabilized with oxygen therapy. A diagnosis of cardiac problem was made from history, auscultation, radiograph, ECG, and echocardiography. Jugular pulsation was palpated and a harsh, systolic murmur of tricuspid regurgitation was prominent at the right cardiac apex. Tricuspid valve dysplasia (TVD) was confirmed with echocardiography, accompanying enormous myocardial hypertrophy. The clinical signs had been improved for 8 months with careful therapy and periodic abdominocentesis, and ascites was well controlled. The situation, however, became worse quickly in a week because the client did not follow our management schedule. Finally, she died due to dyspnea and shock. After the spontaneous death, necropsy and histopathological examination were performed and when we opened the thorax, a significantly large heart was observed. On histopathological findings, grossly myocardium appeared pale initially, then progressed to yellow and white. Microscopically, there was an extensive hemorrhage along with loss of myocardial striations. Interstitial fibrosis and various degenerative alterations in myocytes were also present.

  • The purpose of this paper is to study on the characteristic of site planning of Hadrian's villa. The whole site planning of Hadrian's villa can be divided by different characteristic four groups(I-IV). It is analysed to the whole site plan of such huge complex and the site planning of partial each group which is organically connected each other. The results of this study are as follows: 1. Hadrian's villa was arranged in adapt to natural condition according to a gentle inclination by topography and terrain of the whole site which many different buildings are oriented towards natural landscape of the site and the site surroundings. 2. The site planning of Hadrian's villa is composed of dividing into four groups as plan segmentalized through various land use plan, considering for territory of functional aspect and direction of axis formed by situation and direction of topography and terrain. 3. The concept of site planning to buildings of Hadrian's villa is composed through each other connection; the first, meeting, crossing and merging with each other from arrangement by several axises, the second, change of direction with as the center a part of corner of buildings and the third, facing or inserting system to side and side, side and a part of corner of building.

  • Through investigating the effects that result from the form and preference of Ahnsan (案山) and Jusan(主山) symbolizing ground in the cases of 21 of the Korean Academics for classical learning which called Seowon(書院) located in South Korea of the whole 47, to layout the Korean Academics for classical learning, what factor Sarim(士林) preferred to and how they analyzed the form of circumjacent mountains by Fengshui. While the Jusan has intrinsic attribute due to connecting with the place, Hyuljang(穴場), the Ahnsan has public and extrovert. It can be explained that the Sarim who established the Korean Academics for classical learning had their internal hope and external justification. To put it concretely, because of their necessity of concentrating on their study within nature and their situation as hermits apart from government through long time, they made the Korean Academics for classical learning stable and satisfactory. Therefore, they had to choose Moogocksung(武曲星) as a Jusan. And their study was essential method to take their justification. And It was attractive for them to be a public officer by their study. So they preferred to Moonpilbong(文筆峯) symbolizing their achievements on their study. So the layout of the Korean Academics for classical learning tells us that the Sarim sought internal stability and external scholarship.
