Purpose : The purpose of this study was to examine the differences in sit-to-stand movement and static standing balance between young adults and older adults Methods : Thirty young adults and thirty older adults participated in this study. The Good Balance System was used to assess participants' sit-to-stand movement and static standing balance. The sit-to-stand movement was measured as mediolateral and anterioposterior displacement of the centre of pressure (mm/s) while sit-to-stand on a force platform, and time required to complete a sit-to-stand movement on a force platform. The static standing balance was measured as mediolateral and anterioposterior displacement of the center of pressure (mm/s) and velocity moment (mm2/s) while standing on a force platform with opened eyes and with closed eyes. Result : A significant difference was found in the mediolateral and anterioposterior center of pressure displacement and the time required to complete a sit-to-stand movement of the two groups (p<.05). A significant difference between the groups was found as to mediolateral centre of pressure displacement and the velocity moment when standing with opened eyes and with closed eyes (p<.05). Conclusion : In conclusion, older adults showed decreased sit-to-stand movement and static standing balance ability compared to the young adult. Clinicians should consider sit-to-stand and balance training for older adult.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a task-oriented approach on weight-bearing distribution and muscular activities of the paretic leg during sit-to-stand movement in 18 chronic stroke patients. Both groups were received neurodevelopmental treatment for 30 min/day and then the experimental group ($n_1$=9) followed additional a task-oriented approach (sit-to stand training with controlled environment) and the control group ($n_2$=9) followed a passive range of motion exercise for 15 min/day, five days/week, for four weeks. Weight-bearing distribution and muscular activities of the paretic leg during sit-to-stand movement were measured before and after four weeks of training. There was significantly improved weight-bearing distribution of the paretic leg during sit-to-stand movement in the experimental group compared with that of the control group after four weeks of training (p<.05). But electromyographic activities of the quadriceps and the tibialis anterior of the paretic leg were not significantly different (p>.05). Thus, it is necessary to apply a task-oriented approach to improve the weight-bearing distribution of the paretic leg during sit-to-stand movement in chronic stroke patients.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of 'knowledge of result' and 'knowledge of performance', two types of extrinsic feedbacks, during the sit-to-stand movement in children with hemiplegic cerebral palsy. Methods: A total of ten children with hemiplegic cerebral palsy (ages 8 to 12 years) were recruited for the study. Subjects with hemiplegic cerebral palsy performed sit-to-stand movement in front of a mirror. Their performance was supervised and revised for normal movement by a pediatric physiotherapist. In the knowledge of the result, subjects performed sit-to-stand using a chair with an armrest in their mind with normal movement. In the knowledge of performance, subjects performed sit-to-stand under verbal instructions. Randomized cross over trials were used in this study. Main outcome measurements were as follows: mediolateral speed, anteroposterior speed, velocity moment, extent in mediolateral direction, extent in anteroposterior direction, and vertical distance of the center of pressure. Results: The mediolateral speed and extent of center of pressure was higher for 'knowledge of performance' in comparison with the other type of extrinsic feedbacks (p<0.05). The other parameters, including anteroposterior speed and extent, and vertical speed of the center of pressure, did not differ between the two types of extrinsic feedbacks (p>0.05). Conclusion: These findings suggested that training in sit-to-stand movement with 'knowledge of result' may result in better use of extrinsic feedback.

Purpose : This study was conducted to investigate the changes in trunk movement and ground reaction during sit to stand motion using visual feedback. Methods : Fifteen adults (average age: 23.53±1.77 years) participated in this study. An infrared reflective marker was attached to the body each participant for motion analysis, and the participants performed sit to stand motion while wearing a hat attached with a laser pointer, which provided visual feedback. First, the sit to stand action was repeated thrice without obtaining any visual feedback, followed by a three minute break. Next, the laser pointers attached to hats were irradiated on a whiteboard, located at a distance of 5 m in front of the chairs, on which the participants sat; a baseline was set, and the participants performed stand up movements three times under this condition. A visual feedback was provided to the participants to prevent the laser pointers from crossing the set baseline. During each stand-up movement, the position of the reflective marker attached to the subject's body was recorded in real time using an infrared camera for motion analysis. The trunk movement and ground reaction force were extracted through recorded data and analyzed according to the presence or absence of visual feedback. Results : The results indicated that in the presence of a visual feedback during the sit-to-stand movements, the range of motion of the trunk and hip joints decreased, whereas that of the knee and ankle joints increased in the sagittal plane. The rotation angle of the trunk in the horizontal plane decreased. The left and right movement speed of the center of pressure increased, the pressing force decreased, and the forward and backward movement speed of the trunk decreased. Conclusion : The results suggest that the efficiency and stability of the stand up movement of a body increase when a visual feedback is provided.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of different types of rehabilitation training program on the kinetic and kinematic parameters during sit-to-stand movement(STS) in chronic stroke patients. Two groups of hemiparetic patients, experimental and control, participated in the study. The experimental group participated in a 10-week training program (three sessions/wk, $1{\sim}1.5\;hr/session$) consisting of a warm-up, aerobic exercises, lower extremity strengthening. and a cool-down. The control group participated in an aerobic exercise. Three dimensional kinematic analysis and force platform; were used to analyze the duration of STS, lower extremity angle, and weight bearing ability. The experimental group which had more strength of lower extremity displayed decrease in duration of STS. However, the control group showed increases in duration during sit-to-stand movement. The control group flexed their trunk more than the group did Therefore, it took more time to extend their trunk during STS. The duration in sit-to-stand was affected by the strength of lower extremity and the angle of trunk movement. The angles of ankle and knee joint had an influenced on duration of STS. The post experimental group performed with their feet near the front leg of the chair during sit-to-stand, therefore the duration was decreased. The repetitive sit-to-stand movements as a resistance exercise was effective to hemiparetic patients in learning mechanism of sit-to-stand. The control group showed decreased differences in the vertical ground reaction forces between paretic and non-paretic limbs. Their training program included strengthening exercise that may help improving weight bearing ability. The control group showed increases in the center of pressure in the anteroposterior and mediolateral displacement. This means that the stability of movement was low in the control group. Their training program which combined aerobic and strengthening exercises that are more effective to improve the stability of movement.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate changes in movement strategies of lower limb joints depending on the type of heel during sit-to-stand. Methods: Twenty healthy females participated in this study. All subjects performed sit-to-stand three times each with three different types of heels - bare feet, 9 cm high-heeled shoes, and unstable shoes. Trails were conducted in random order. Three-dimensional motion analysis systems were used for collection and analysis of the kinematic data of lower limb movements. Results: Results of this study showed kinematic differences in pelvis, hip joints, knee joints, and ankle joints during sit-to-stand based on the type of heels. At the initial sit-to-stand, hip joint flexion, knee joint flexion, ankle joint flexion, and ankle joint inversion showed significant differences. The maximal angles of hip joint flexion, hip joint adduction, knee joint flexion, ankle joint flexion, and ankle joint inversion were significantly different, while hip joint adduction, pelvic forward tilt, hip joint rotation, knee joint flexion, ankle joint flexion, and ankle joint inversion differed significantly during the terminal of sit-to-stand. Conclusion: Therefore, the type of heel played an important role in selection of lower limb movements during sit-to-stand which were essential parts of daily life movements.
Purpose: Rising from a chair is important for activities of daily living. Several factors have influence on sit-to-stand movement. We studied the effect of inclination of seat surface of on the movement of rising from a chair with electromyographic (EMG). Methods: Twelve subjects performed the sit-to-stand movement on anterior-inclined, standard, and posterior inclined chair. We measured onset time of tibialis anterior and rectus femoris with EMG on each inclination chair. Results: The onset time at the anterior-inclined chair is significantly faster than it at the standard chair (p<0.05). And the onset time at the posterior-inclined chair is significantly slower than it at the standard chair (p<0.05). Conclusion: Rising from anterior inclined chair appeared to be more effective than rising from the standard and posterior inclined chair. Therefore, this finding suggests that the selection of set surface inclination must be considered for activities of daily living during rehabilitation.
Purpose : Sit-to-stand (STS) is one of the important activities of daily living (ADL) and each of its parameters is used frequently. This study aimed to examine the influence of different seat height on performance time and floor reaction force strength during an STS movement. Methods : Fifteen young-adult male subjects participated in this study. The subjects were divided into three groups based on lower leg length. Subjects performed an STS movement twice from chairs at height adjusted by the lower leg length of each subject. To examine the influence of the chair seat height, ground reaction forces during a STS performed with 3 chair heights adjusted to each subjects lower leg length were compared. Results : Vertical ground reaction force and time during an STS movement were measured to evaluate. Parameters regarding ground reaction force were selected for analyses. Significant differences were found in ground reaction force at G1 was greater than G2 and G3. Conclusion : The STS movement achievement strategy differed since chair seat height changes relatively by the difference in lower leg length. When conducting the ability to achieve STS movement rating test, chair seat height considering each subject's lower leg length may be needed.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to develop and investigate the feasibility of a sit-to-stand assistive chair using a pneumatic cylinder. Design: Cross-sectional study. Methods: The sit-to-stand assistive chair was developed to assist the sit-to-stand movement by rising up of the chair by a pneumatic cylinder. After the user is seated on the chair, if the pneumatic cylinder pulls the seat plate when standing up, the spring of the pneumatic cylinder, which has been stretched, assists in rising the rear end of the seat plate so that the user can stand conveniently and comfortably. A feasibility test was performed in 10 heathy adults. The electromyographic muscle activation of the trunk and lower extremity muscles was analyzed, which included the erector spinae, rectus abdominis, quadriceps, tibialis anterior, gastrocnemius when standing up from sitting using the developed chair and standing up without using the developed chair. Results: As a result, the sit-to-stand assistive chair using a pneumatic cylinder was developed. In the feasibility test, the use of the developed chair had a decrease in rectus abdominis, quadriceps, tibialis anterior activation compared to those who did not use the device in the healthy adults. Conclusions: The sit-to-stand assistive chair using a pneumatic cylinder may be helpful to reduce the activation of the rectus abdominis, quadriceps, tibialis anterior muscles when performing a sit-to-stand movement. Through the results, the efficacy of the sit-to-stand assistive chair can be confirmed. In the future, further studies are warranted to investigate for the safety and efficacy of its use in the elderly population or those who are disabled.
Purpose: This study aims to verify the effectiveness of sit-to-stand training with visual feedback to improve balance ability and knee extensor strength of total knee replacement patients. Methods: In this study, 15 patients with total knee replacement participated in this study. Subjects were assigned to two groups: a feedback group (experimental group)(n = 8) and a control group (n = 7). They all received 30 min of continuous passive motion (CPM) and sit-to-stand training for 15 min five times per week for two weeks. Knee extensor and balance ability were measured. Knee extensor was measured by Biodex system 3; balance ability was measured by Balancia software. Results: After the intervention, there was a significant difference in the strengthening of the knee extensor muscles in the feedback group, area 95%, weight distribution of the affected side, and the sit-to-stand test repeated five times (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The results of this study showed that sit-to-stand training with visual feedback was more effective in increasing knee extensor muscle strength and balance ability than the sit-to-stand training without visual feedback. Therefore, in order to improve the knee extensor muscle and the balance of total knee replacement patients, it is necessary to consider providing visual feedback during sit-to-stand training.
