  • In order to fabricate the translucent electrooptic ceramics which are comparable to PLZT, $PNZT^*$ has been prepared from aqueous solutions of their itrate and chlorides. In the quarternary $Pb^{1-x} Nd_x(Zr_{0.63} Ti_{0.37})^{1-\frac{x}{4}O_3$, (PNZT) $(0.02\le x\ge 0.12)$ system cold-pressed PNZT slugs were sintered in $O_2$ in pt-crucible for 45 min. at 118$0^{\circ}C$ and were then heat-treated in air for 60 hrs. at 120$0^{\circ}C$ in Al2O3 crucibles containing $PbZrO_3$ powder to control the atmosphere. Mean particle size of calcined PNZT powders was 0.1~0.15${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. It was found that the maximum value of optical transmission has been revealed at 6~8 at. % $Nd_2O_3$ added body and that their dielectric constant has been decreased as the frequency increased. Curic temperature has been varied inversely with $Nd^{3+}$ ion content up to 8 at. % and become constant above this value. $^*Pb_{1-x}Nd_x(Zr_{0.63} Ti_{0.37})_{1-2/4}O_3$

  • Porcelain with high thermal shock resistance was successfully fabricated by a lithium solution infiltration method with a lithium hydroxide solution. Lithium hydroxide solutions having various lithium concentrations were infiltrated into pre-sintered porcelain bodies. The porcelain sample infiltrated by the 9 wt% lithium solution and heat treated at $1250^{\circ}C$ for 1 h showed a low thermal expansion coefficient of $1.0{\times}10^{-6}/^{\circ}C$ with excellent thermal shock resistance. The highly thermally resistant porcelain had a well-developed ${\beta}$-spodumene phase with the general phases observed in porcelain. Furthermore, the porcelain showed a denser structure of $2.41g/cm^3$ sintering density and excellent whiteness in comparison with commercial thermally resistible porcelains. The lithium hydroxide in the samples readily reacted with moisture, and liquid phase reactants were formed during the fabrication process. In the case of an excess amount of lithium in the sample body, the lithium reactants were forced to the surface and re-crystallized at the surface, leaving large pores beneath the surface. These phenomena resulted in an irregular structure in the surface area and led to cracking in samples subjected to a thermal shock test.

  • Residual organics were considered as impurity in Sol-Gel method. The purpose of this study was to find the conditions to contain as much residual organics as possible in silica gel prepared from TEOS(tetraethylortho-silicate) by Sol-Gel method. Residual organics are to be expected to have reduction effect on synthesizing Si3N4 from silica gel. The results of this study are follows: 1) The maximum content of entrapped carbon was 19.8 wt.%(C/SiO2=0.25 wt.ratio) in silica gel synthesized under the conditions 1.5 fold mole water for incomplete hydrolysis, 2.5 fold mole phenol as a solvent and 0.1 fold mole HCl as a catalyst to TEOS. 2) Silica gel with organics entrapped by Sol-Gel method had a positive effect on the formation of Si3N4 compared with commercial silica gel. 3) Sintered body of synthesized $\alpha$-Si3N4 with Y2O3 and Al2O3 as additives at 175$0^{\circ}C$ in N2 atmosphere showed bending strength, 602$\pm$20 MPa and frature toughness 4.45$\pm$0.15 MPa.m1/2.

  • In this study, the effects of internal heat treatment associated sintering temperatures were simulated by the Finite Element Method (FEM). The sintering mechanism of pulsed current activated sintering process (PCAS) is still unclear because of some unexplainable heat transfer phenomena in coupled multi-physical fields, as well as the difficulty in measuring the interior temperatures of metal powder. We have carried out simulation study to find out thermal distributions between graphite mold and Ruthenium powder prior to PCAS process. For PCAS process, heating rate was maintained at $100^{\circ}C/min$ the simulation indicates that the sintering temperature range was between $1000^{\circ}C$ to $1300^{\circ}C$ under 60 MPa. The heat transfer inside the Ruthenium sintered-body sample was modelled through the whole process in order to predict the minimum interior temperature. Thermal simulation shows that the interior temperature gradient decreased by graphite punch length and calculation results well agreed with the PCAS field test results.

  • Nanopowders provide better details for micro features and surface finish in powder injection molding processes. However, the small size of such powders induces processing challenges, such as low solid loading, high feedstock viscosity, difficulty in debinding, and distinctive sintering behavior. Therefore, the optimization of process conditions for nanopowder injection molding is essential, and it should be carefully performed. In this study, the powder injection molding process for Fe nanopowder has been optimized. The feedstock has been formulated using commercially available Fe nanopowder and a wax-based binder system. The optimal solid loading has been determined from the critical solid loading, measured by a torque rheometer. The homogeneously mixed feedstock is injected as a cylindrical green body, and solvent and thermal debinding conditions are determined by observing the weight change of the sample. The influence of the sintering temperature and holding time on the density has also been investigated. Thereafter, the Vickers hardness and grain size of the sintered samples have been measured to optimize the sintering conditions.

  • This study was performed to fabricate the porous titanium foam by space holder method using NaCl powder, and to evaluate the effect of NaCl volume fractions (33.3~66.6 vol.%) on the porosities, compressive strength, Young's modulus and permeability. For controlling pore size, CP titanium and NaCl particles were sieved to different size range of 70~150 ${\mu}m$ and 300~425 ${\mu}m$ respectively. NaCl of green Ti compact was removed in water followed by sintered at $1200^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours. Total porosities of titanium foam were in the range of 38-70%. Pore shape was a regular hexahedron similar that of NaCl shape. Porous Ti body showed that Young's modulus and compressive strength were in the range of 0.6-6 GPa and 8-127 MPa respectively. It showed that pore size and mechanical properties of Ti foams was controllable by NaCl size and volume fractions.

  • Fabrication possibility of low-shrinkage alumina without oxidation and wetting agent was presented on the basis of observation about oxidation behavior, microstructure and physical characteristics of such reaction agents free Al2O3-Al system. The composition less than Al 10w/o where Al can act as a sintering agent for Al2O3 was excluded. Under the condition of present experiments oxidation of Al2O3-Al system was dependent not on holding time but mainly on oxidation temperature. In thes case of Al powder not comminuted effectively during powder mixing of Al2O3-Al, columnar structure which would act as a hindrance to the densification during sintering developed more during oxidation with higher Al contents, and which made the fabrication of low-shrinkage Al2O3 ceramics impossible. If Al powder was comminuted effectively due to co-mixed Al2O3 characteristics, densification was improved because of no columnar structure and made the fabrication of sintered body with -2.7% dimensional change and 81% relative density possible. As a result, it is possible to fabricate dense low-shrinkage Al2O3 ceramics without oxidation and wetting agent under conditions such as smaller particle size of Al, Al contents below 50v/o, higher green density of Al2O3-Al compact and the use of Al2O3 powder used for high-density ceramics.

  • While sintering the Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-PbTiO3-BaTiO3 system through solid-reaction route, pyrochlore(Pb3Nb4O13) phase while reduces the dielectric constant is inevitably formed. Substitution of Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 with PbTiO3 and BaTiO3 can retard the occurrence of pyrochlore phase. The perovskite solid-solution without containing pyrochlore phase can be obtained when we consolidated the materials consisting of PbTiO3 and BaTiO3 at 1200℃ for 2 hours. The sintered body composed of 0.8Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-0.1PbTiO3-0.1BaTiO3 composition showed the diffused phase transition(DPT) phenomena and the maximum value of dielectric constant at 0℃ (Tc') with the value of 1.3×104.

  • Pure submicron $SrTiO_3$ powders had been synthesized with chemical wet process that $5N-NH_4OH$ solution was sprayed into the mixed solution of $SrTiO_3$, $TiCl_4$ and $H_2O_2$ with $N_2$ carrier gas. The characteristic properties of powders obtained from this experiment were as follows. The optimum synthesis condition in reaction bath was above PH 8.5 and under $25^{\circ}C$ The particle size of precipitated SrTiO(OH) powders dried at 6$0^{\circ}C$ was under 0.01${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and uniform. Amorphous precipitated complex powders emitted adsorbed water at 15$0^{\circ}C$ less that and crystalline $SrTiO_3$powders was produced from calcining the complex at 30$0^{\circ}C$. Sintered body of SrTiO3 fired at 133$0^{\circ}C$ showed that relative dielectric constant was 228 at 1MHZ and bulk density was 4.73g/$cm^3$.
