In this paper, the geotechnical report of the Northern Fereshteh area in Tabriz is used and the characteristics of shallow foundation of a single pile and compared pile group and geogrid in terms of the settlement of a building foundation on clayey soil. Additionally, impacts of existing variables such as the number of geogrid layers, the length of the pile, and the depth of groundwater level affected by the dynamic load caused by the Taiwan Jiji earthquake via numerical analysis using PLAXIS software are examined. The results of fifty-four models indicated that the construction of a pile group with a diameter of 1 meter and a length of 14 meters significantly diminished the consolidation settlement of the soil in the Northern Fereshteh area, where the settlement value has been triggered by the load inflicted by earthquake. Moreover, the construction of four layers of geogrid at intervals of one meter led to a significant decrease in the settlement. Finally, after reaching a maximum depth, it had no reducing effects on the foundation settlement.
In this study, experimental work has been carried out to investigate the effect of lateral soil movement on passive piles. This paper consists mainly of two parts: the first, performance of a series of laboratory experiments on a single pile and one-row pile groups, and the second, comparison between the measured and the predicted results. In the laboratory experiments, a quadrilateral soil movement profile was imposed on model piles embedded in both sandy soils and weathered soils. The maximum bending moment and pile deflection induced in passive piles were found to be highly dependent on pile stiffness, pile spacing, relative densities and pile head fixity condition. It was shown that the group effect might either increase or decrease the maximum bending moment and pile deflection, depending on the aforementioned influence factors. Based on the results obtained, a spacing-to-diameter ratio of 7.0 seems to be large enough to eliminate the group effect, and a pile in such a case behaves essentially the same as a single pile.

In the present work, a number of advanced three-dimensional (3D) parametric finite element numerical analyses have been conducted to study the behaviour of a single pile in consolidating ground from coupled consolidation analyses. A single pile with typical minimum and maximum ranges of fill height and clay stiffness has been modelled. The computed results demonstrate that the higher the height of the fill above the clay surface and the smaller the stiffness of the clay, the higher the dragloads and the negative skin friction-induced pile settlements. It has been found that the development of dragloads and pile settlement is more governed by the stiffness of the clay rather than the height of the fill. Positive shaft resistance is mobilised only after the average degree of consolidation is larger than 50%. Although the pile is installed when the degree of consolidation is 50% or more, relatively large negative skin friction can nevertheless develop on the pile. On the other hand, when a load is applied on the pile experiencing an increase in the negative skin friction with time during consolidation, the pile undergoes a large increase in the final settlement of up to 95% compared to that of a pile without axial load on the pile head. The allowable pile capacity when there is negative skin friction on the pile is reduced by about 4-11% compared to a pile without negative skin friction.

Generally most of pile foundations are constructed with group pile rather than single pile. The study on efficiency and bearing capacity which are major elements for rational design of this group pile has been actively progressed, whereas there are truly only a few studies of negative skin friction working on group pile due to the consolidation of ground. The purpose of this study is to determine, among the elements of negative skin friction applied to pile, the occurrence modality of negative skin friction at center, side, and corner of $3{\times}3$ group pile using model test and, based on those observations, to propose the effective design direction of group pile.

Large diameter bored pile was selected as the foundation type for Taipei 101. The pile construction method and specific construction procedures were determined based on the results of trial installation and pile load tests. The baseline for foundation design was established using the friction versus depth characteristics of each ground layer obtained from the pile load tests. As the ground profile and depth to the top of rock formation varied significantly on this site, the pile length, bearing capacity and settlement for single pile were analyzed using the information interpreted from adjacent boreholes. The post grouting at pile tip was mandatory for pile construction. Nevertheless, it was treated as a measure reducing the influence of construction uncertainties and providing extra safety for the foundation system.
This paper presents results km a series of model tests oil vertically loaded single piles to compare the behaviors of H and pipe piles under the same ground condition. The aims of this paper were to compare the bearing capacity of H-pile md pipe piles under in the same ground condition and to estimate the effect of gravity acceleration and relative soil density. Relative density of soil were made to be 40%, 80% and embedded length of pile on sand was increased by 10, 12, 14, 16 times of the diameter of pile, respectively. As a results of test series, allowable load of H-pile is from 6.4% to 18.2% larger than allowable load of pipe pile in relative density 80% and from 9.1% to 39.4% larger than allowable load of pipe pile in relative density 40%. As a results of numerical analysis, we were predicted behaviour of stress-displacement of pile with model test. In the case of relative density 80% and 40%, bearing capacity of H pile represent from 17.74% to 18.6% larger than allowable load of pipe pile.

Current design of pile group is based on the estimation of the overall bearing capacity of a pile group from that of a single pile using a group efficiency. However, the behaviors of a pile group are influenced by various factors such as method of pile installation, pile-soil-pile interaction, cap-soil-pile interaction, etc. Thus it is practically impossible to take into account these factors reasonably with the only group efficiency, In this paper, a new method for the design of pile groups is proposed, where the significant factors affecting the behavior of a pile group are considered separately by adopting several efficiencies. Furthermore, in the proposed method, the load transfer characteristics of piles and the difference of pile behaviors with respect to the pile locations in group can be taken into account. The efficiencies for the method are determined using the settlement failure criterion, which is consistent with the concept of allowable settlement for structures. The efficiencies calculated from the results of existing model tests are presented, and the bearing capacity of a pile group in the other model test is calculated and compared with that from the test result, to verify the validity of the proposed method.

In general, the foundation refers to a group pile with several single piles connected by an upper structure. However, when a load is applied to pile groups, the range of stress applied to the ground is expanded and overlapped compared with the single pile, so the overall bearing capacity may decrease. This reduction ratio of bearing capacity is referred to as the efficiency of pile groups. Therefore, in this study, the soil composition, the arrangement and spacing of group piles, and the contact characteristics between the ground and piles were set as analysis variables, and the group pile efficiency and individual pile behavior were analyzed. As a result of the analysis, the efficiency of pile groups tends to converge or decrease when the friction coefficients are increased with ground type. Through this, the optimal efficiency of pile groups can be derived. In addition, through the analysis of individual piles, the load ratio of each pile was analyzed when an upper load was applied. In the case of piles located inside group piles, the load was relatively low, and this is considered to have an influence on the internal ground.

Three-dimensional (3D) finite element analyses have been performed to study the behaviour of a single pile to open face tunnelling in stiff clay. Several key factors such as tunnelling-induced ground and pile settlement, and shear transfer mechanism have been studied in detail. Tunnelling resulted in the development of pile settlement larger than the Greenfield soil surface settlement. In addition, due to changes in the shear transfer between the pile and the soil next to the pile with tunnel advancement, axial force distributions along the pile change drastically. The apparent allowable pile capacity was reduced up to about 30% due to the development of tunnelling-induced pile head settlement. The skin friction on the pile was increased with tunnel advancement associated with the changes of soil stresses and ground deformation and hence axial pile force distribution was reduced. Maximum tunnelling-induced tensile force on the pile was about 21% of the designed pile capacity. The zone of influence on the pile behaviour in the longitudinal direction may be identified as ${\pm}1$-2D (D: tunnel diameter) from the pile centre (behind and ahead of the pile axis in the longitudinal direction) based on the analysis conditions assumed in the current study. Negative excess pore pressure was mobilised near the pile tip, while positive excess pore pressure was computed at the upper part of the pile. It has been found that the serviceability of a pile experiencing adjacent tunnelling is more affected by pile settlement than axial pile force changes.

In the current work, a series of three-dimensional finite element analyses have been carried out to understand the behaviour of pre-existing single piles to adjacent tunnelling by considering the tunnel face pressures and the relative location of pile tips with respect to the tunnel. The numerical modelling has analysed the effect of the face pressures on the pile behaviour. The analyses concentrate on the ground settlements, the pile head settlements, the axial pile forces and the shear stress transfer mechanism at the pile-soil interface. The head settlements of the pile (the vertical distance between the pile and the tunnel: 0.25D, where D is the tunnel diameter) directly above the tunnel crown with the face pressure 50% of the in-situ horizontal soil stress at the tunnel springline decreased by about 38% compared to corresponding settlements with a face pressure 25% of the in-situ horizontal soil stress at the tunnel springline. Furthermore, it was found that the smaller the face pressure, the larger the tunnelling-induced ground movements and the axial pile forces were and the higher the degree of the shear strength mobilisation at the pile-soil interface. When the piles were outside the tunnel influence zone, compressive pile forces were developed due to tunnelling. It has been found that the ground settlements and the pile settlements are heavily affected by the face pressures and the position of the pile tip relative to the tunnel. In addition, the computed results have been compared with relevant studies previously reported in literature. The behaviour of the piles has been extensively examined and analysed by considering the key features in great detail.
