Failure process, mode and strength of unidirectional composite single lap bonded joints were investigated experimentally with respect to bonding methods, those are, co-curing with and without adhesive and secondary bonding. The co-cured joint specimens without adhesive had the largest failure strength. Progressive failures along the adhesive layer occurred in the secondary bonded specimens. In the co-cured specimens with adhesive film which had better material strength and adhesion performance, delamination failure occurred and the joint strengths were less than those of secondary bonded specimens. Delamination failure did not occur in the secondary bonded specimens because of earlier crack growth and progressive failure in the adhesive layer. Therefore, failure strength of composite bonded Joints were not always proportionate to material strength and adhesion performance of the adhesive due to the weakness of delamination in composite materials. The effects of surface roughness, bondline thickness and fillets were also studied on secondary bonded specimens.

The static tensile load bearing capability of as adhesively-bonded tubular single lap jint that is calculated usign the linear mechanical properties of adhesive is usually far from the experimentally determined because the majority of the load transfer of the adhesively-bonded jointd is accomplished by the nonlinear behavior of the rubber-toughened eoxy adhesive. In this paper, both the nonlinear mechanical properties and the fabrication residual thermal stresses of adhesive were included in the calculation of the stresses of adhesively-bonded joints. The onlinear tensile properties of adhesive were approximated by an exponential form which was represented by the initial tensile modulus and ultimate tensile stength of adhesive. The stress distribution in the adhesive were calculated by applying the load obtained from the tensile tests. From the tensile tests and the stress analysis of adhesively-bonded hoints, the failure model for adhesively-bonded tubular single lap joints was proposed.

Failure strengths of composite single-lap adhesive joints were investigated with various parameters such as manufacturing method, overlap length and adherend thickness. A total of 335 single-lap joint specimens were tested under tension. Specimens were fabricated with 4 different manufacturing processes; cocuring without and with adhesive, secondary bonding and co-bonding. Each manufacturing process has 5 different overlap lengths and 4 different thicknesses, respectively. As expected, failure strength is higher in thicker adherend joints and lower in larger overlap length specimens. Interesting result is that the secondary bonded joints show the higher strength than the cobonded and cocured joints with adhesive, and give close or even higher strength compared with non-adhesive cocured case.

A vibration response-based detection system was used to investigate the adhesive areas of single-lap joints using a nonlinear transformation approach for deep learning. In industry or engineering fields, it is difficult to know the condition of an invisible part within a structure that cannot easily be disassembled and the conditions of adhesive areas of adhesively bonded structures. To address these issues, a detection method was devised that uses nonlinear transformation to determine the adhesive areas of various single-lap-jointed specimens from the vibration response of the reference specimen. In this study, a frequency response function with nonlinear transformation was employed to identify the vibration characteristics, and a virtual spectrogram was used for classification in convolutional neural network based deep learning. Moreover, a vibration experiment, an analytical solution, and a finite-element analysis were performed to verify the developed method with aluminum, carbon fiber composite, and ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene specimens.

With the wide application of fiber-reinforced composite material in aircraft, space structures and robot arms, the design and manufacture of composite joints have become a very important research area because they are often the weakest areas in composite structures. In this study, the effects of the adhesive thickness, residual thermal stress on the torque capacity of the tubular single lap joints were studied. The torque capacity of the adhesive joints were experimentally determined and found to be inversely proprotional to the adhesive thickness. In order to match the experimental results to the theoretical analyses, the elastic-perfectly plastic material properties of the adhesive were used in the closed form solution. Also, the residual thermal stress of the joints were calculated by the finite element method and it was proved that the residual thermal stress could play an important role in the thick adhesive joints.
Recently, weight reduction of vehicles has been of great interest, and consequently the use of composite materials in the automotive industry is increasing every year. Composite sandwich panels which consist of two skins and core materials are replacing steels in automotive floor and door. The substitution of one material for another is accompanied by change of joining method, so that adhesive bonding has been popularly used for joining method of composite materials. In the case of adhesive bonding of composite materials, there could be loss in the joint strength by delamination of two faceplates or cracking on faceplate. Thus, it is necessary to prevent loss in the joint strength by designing the joint geometry. In the present paper, adhesive bonding of aluminum sandwich sheet was tried. For understanding joint behavior, studies on stresses in the single lap joint were reviewed and failure modes of composite material were analyzed. Strength tests on the single lap joint consisting of aluminum sandwich sheet and steel were performed and variation of the joint strength with the joint configuration was shown. Based on these results, design guide of adhesive bonding in aluminum sandwich sheet was suggested.
This study presents an explicit dynamic analysis of an adhesively bonded single-lap joint under an impact load. The finite element software, ANSYS LS-DYNA, was used for the analysis and Von Mises stresses were obtained from the analysis. To model the adherents, solid elements were used and a rigid body was assumed for impactor modeling. Three impact heights (1 m, 5 m, and 10 m) were applied to consider different impact conditions and infinite boundary conditions were applied to the end-area of each adherent to save computational time in the analysis. In addition to investigating the stresses in the normal state, we also investigated the stresses in a damaged state (elasticity deterioration), simulated by a change in Young's modulus for 36 of the 3600 elements in the upper layer of the adhesive. The results showed that the location of damage is critical to the stress state of each layer (upper, middle, and lower).

We jointed Bi(Pb)-Sr-Ca-Cu-O multifilament tapes and evaluated their electrical and mechanical properties. In order to improve connectivity of multifilaments, one or two single-filament tape was inserted between two multifilament tapes. The critical current ratio(CCR) and n-value of the jointed tapes were evaluated as a function of uniaxial pressure. It was observed that critical current ratio and n-value were 24.8-29.0% and 2.5-2.8 for MM lap-jointed tape. On the other hand, the corresponding values were improved to 24.7-53.9% and 3.1-4.2 for MSM jointed tape, and 63.4-76.0% and 3.4-5.1 for double MS:vr lap-jointed tape, respectively. The highest electrical properties of double MSM lap-jointed tape are considered to be owing to the presence of single core, causing better interconnections of multifilaments between the two tapes. The mechanical property of jointed tape was evaluated and correlated to the microstructural evolution. The strength of jointed tapes was 44-64% less than that of the unjoined tape. The strain tolerance of jointed tape was also reduced compared to that of the unjoined tape. These lower mechanical properties of jointed tape are probably due to the induced nonuniform microstructure such as the existence of cracks and Ag-intrusion in the joined region.

The objects of this research are to establish the criteria of peel occurrence considering the shape of bond terminus and to compare the strength properties of adhesive joint of different three type such as butt joint, T-shape, and single lap Joints. The criteria of peel occurrence at the bond terminus was suggested. Peel loads of three type adhesive joint (butt Joint, T-shape specimen, single lap joint) were determined from tensile tests. Principal stress distributions of these joints were determined from finite element method analysis. Then, peel occurrence was estimated with stress singularity factor$(K_{prin})$ when the terminus shape was square, with average principal stress when the terminus shape was rounded. The conclusions are summarized as follows; (1) In the non-filleted model(e.g., butt joint, T-shape specimen), principal stress shows singularity at the bond terminus, intensity of stress(principal stress) singularity $(K_{prin})$ can use as the criteria of peel occurrence at the bond terminus. (2) In the filleted model(e.g., single lap joint), principal stress has not affected singularity at the bond terminus. Average principal stress$(K_{av})$ can use as the criteria of peel occurrence at the bond terminus.

This paper deals with stress analysis of single-lap adhesive joints which have uncertain material properties. Basically, material properties have a certain amount of scatter and such uncertainties can affect the performance of joints. In this paper, the convex modeling is introduced to consider such uncertainties in calculating peel and shear stress of adhesive joints and the results are compared with those from the Monte Carlo simulation. Numerical results show that stresses increase when uncertainties considered, which indicates that such uncertainties should not be ignored for estimation of structural safety. Also, the results obtained by the convex modeling and the Monte Carlo simulation show good agreement, which demonstrates the effectiveness of convex modeling.
