The single drilled shaft foundation has been used in the other countries, but has not used in South Korea at all This foundation is very effective and economic method in South Korea which is easy to meet a good rock mass within 50m depth from the ground We have many experiences to construct 1.52 5m drilled shaft foundations and ability to construct 30m drilled shaft foundation without special efforts The soil behavior is nonlinear, but it can be proposed in linear in practical purpose on bridges. The elastic modulus of soil can be rationally obtained by the method of Road Bridge Design Manual in South Korea using the Schmertmann(1970)'s proposal, and the elastic modulus of rock can be obtained by the field test. In seismic design the column and drilled shaft must be restricted to the elastic design because the behavior of this foundation is flexible and the arrangement of the rebars makes the various defect In this paper the design criteria is compared with FHWA design criteria, and the design criteria is proposed in consistent with Road Bridge Design Manual in South Korea. The single drilled shaft foundation of a test bridge was constructed in the Iksan-Jangsoo highway, and we checked its stability, workability and economy

Single-pole transmission structures which are supported by drilled shaft foundations are usually subjected to large overturning moments with modest vertical and lateral loads. To analyze the behavior of the drilled shaft under such loading conditions, an analytical model was developed based on beam-column and subgrade reaction methods. Field model tests were performed to calibrate the developed analytical model in which additional subgrade spring models were adopted. The field test results estimated from the calibrated analytical model were compared with those calculated by one spring model and other commercial program. According to the comparison study, the developed analytical model was proven to be a useful tool to analyze the laterally loaded behavior of foundations for single-pole structures.
In order to evaluate the lateral behavior characteristics of single drilled shaft embedded in granite gneiss, a lateral load test was conducted in field. Horizontal displacement according to lateral load were measured along with the depth by an inclinometer installed in the shaft. In this study, We have evaluated horizontal displacement characteristics comparing the measurement values with calculating results by theoretical formula. Based on the comparison, the Chang's method was similar with the measurement values even though it was slightly underestimated. However, the finite analysis method and p-y method was overestimated, especially on the upper part of the ground.

The drilled pier foundation is widely used to support transmission line structures due to its simplicity of construction. When this foundation type is used in conjunction with a single shaft or H-frame structure, it is subjected to a high overturning moment, combined with modest vertical and shear loads. Since the length and diameter of drilled piers are often governed by a maximum permissible deflection, many drilled piers being installed today are very conservatively designed. In this study, Nine prototype field-tests (1/8 scale) have been conducted in order to determine the vertical and lateral resistance of drilled pier foundation for single pole structures. These test results reveal the test piers behaved essentially as rigid bodies in soil (6D) and the center of rotation of the pier were typically 0.6~0.4 of the pier depth below ground surface. Test results also show the relationship between the applied load and the deflection at the top of the pier is highly nonlinear.

Rock socketed drilled shafts transfer significant portion of structural loads at the socketed part. Therefore, a proper design of side and base resistances of a shaft at the socket is a major concern for the geotechnical engineers. In this study, we modified the Hoek-Brown criterion to estimate side resistance of rock socketed drilled shafts. Earlier method to compute side resistance of a shaft is linear or power functions of intact rock masses. However, side resistance is mobilized like shearing which influenced by the mechanical properties of concrete and rock masses, adhesion of rock/concrete interface, roughness of rock socket. Therefore, a single coefficient or power of uniaxial compressive strength of intact rock cannot provide accurate values of side resistance in a wide range of the uniaxial compressive strength. A new approach proposed in this study can consider in situ rock mass condition (frequency or discontinuities, weathering condition), and rock types thus, it has a wider applicability than the earlier models.

The load distribution and deformation of drilled shafts subjected to axial loads were evaluated by a load transfer approach. The emphasis was on quantifying the load transfer mechanism at the interface between the shafts and surrounding highly weathered rocks based on a numerical analysis and small-scale tension load tests performed on nine instrumented piles. An analytical method that takes into account the soil coupling effect was developed using a modified Mindlin's point load solution. Based on the analysis, a single-modified hyperbolic model is proposed for the shear transfer function of drilled shafts in highly weathered rocks. Through comparisons with field case studies, it is found that the prediction by the present approach is in good agreement with the general trend observed by in-situ measurements.

The bent foundation with single drilled shafts is suitable and economical in South Korea, which has good rock in a shallow depth. This foundation has been designed with an elastic design concept. To apply a plastic design concept written in Korea Bridge Design Criteria, a detail design regulation, which includes the method for a plastic hinge point to occur above the ground, rebar arrangement and soil modelling, should be defined. Soil modelling should be considered in the respect of structural engineer's practicality. In this paper, single drilled shaft piers with 1m diameter are constructed, and cyclic lateral load tests loaded at 4m above the ground are taken to examine the behavior. Reduced diameter shaft above the ground and remaining the steel casing under the ground were used to induce plastic hinge to occur above the ground. Simplified soil models such as elastic relation and p-y curve are adapted, and the prediction results are compared with test results. Prediction results of a model bridge were compared according to soil models with time domain analyses, and design criteria of soil were proposed.
The efficiency of the current design methods for computing pile resistances is analyzed using field load-settlement tests results. Twelve load-settlement test data for drilled shafts and bored piles were obtained from the literature. These load-test data were fitted using the t-z method. Subsequently, the ultimate resistances were evaluated based upon the failure criteria from following methods: (1) the Davisson's approach and (2) settlement corresponding to 5% or 10% shaft diameter approach. The ultimate resistances for these drilled shafts and bored piles were also predicted using methods based on the design code from North America (United States, Canada), Europe, and Asia (Japan). The pile resistances determined from field load-settlement tests were compared with those calculated using the design codes. The comparisons show that most design codes predict a conservative resistance for drilled shafts and bored piles. However, in the case of drilled shafts, we find that some of the design codes can over-predict the resistance and, therefore, should be applied cautiously. This research also shows that the t-z method can be successfully used to predict the ultimate resistance and the load transfer mechanism for a single pile.
A gas turbine consists of an upstream compressor and a downstream turbine with a combustion chamber, and also the compressor and the turbine are generally coupled using a single shaft. Many casing bolts are used to assemble two horizontally separated casings, the gas turbine casing and the compressor casing, in both of axial and vertical directions. Because drilled holes for casing bolts in vertical direction are often too close to drilled holes for casing bolts in axial direction, one can observe cracks in the area frequently during operations of a gas turbine. In this study of the root cause analysis for the cracking initiating from the drilled holes of the casings of a gas turbine, the finite element analysis(FEA) was applied to evaluate the thermal and mechanical characteristics of the casings. By applying the field operation data recorded from combined cycle power plants for FEA, thermal and thermo-mechanical characteristics of a gas turbine are analyzed. The crack is initiated at the geometrical weak point, but it is found that the maximum stress is relieved when the same type of cracks is introduced on purpose during FEA. So, it is verified that the local fracture could be delayed by machining the same type of defects near the hole for casing flange bolts of the gas turbine, where the crack is initiated.
