The continuous growth method was developed for Mn-Zn Ferrite single crystals. It is a new process that the polycrystalline MnχZn1-χFe2O4 raw materials are supplied continuously from the powder feeding system to the crucible heated by R.F. induction and melted in the crucible, and after the single crystals seed is attached to crucible's hole, the crystals are pulled downward with rotation. Growing the crystals by using the growth method different from the conventional Bridgman or Floating Zone method, we defined the factors having effect on the crystal growing through the pre-experiments. They are temperature distribution in the crucible, melt velocity according to its height, wettability between the crucible's bottom and melt. Therefore, Mn-Zn Ferrite single crystals were to be grown by attaining the appropriate melt height in the crucible, powder feeding rate, temperature gradient between the crucible and interface, crystal growing speed, and this method was confirmed to have possibility for single crystal growing.

A numerical analysis was performed on magnetic field effects of silicon melt motion in Czochralski crystal puller. The turbulent modeling was used to simulate the transport phenomena in 18' single crystal growing process. For small crucible angular velocity, the natural convection is dominant. As the crucible angular velocity is increased, the forced convection is increased and the distribution of temperature profiles is broadened. The cusp magnetic field reduces effectively the natural and forced convection near the crucible and the temperature profiles of the silicon fluids is similar in the case of conduction.

The outstanding characteristics of high quality GaN single crystal substrates make it possible to apply the manufacture of high brightness light emitting diodes and power devices. However, it is very difficult to obtain high quality GaN substrate because the process conditions are hard to control. In order to effectively control the formation of GaN polycrystals during the bulk GaN single crystal growth by the HVPE (hydride vapor phase epitaxy) method, a quartz ring was introduced in the edge of substrate. A variety of evaluating method such as high resolution X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy and photoluminescence was used in order to measure the effectiveness of the quartz ring. A secondary ion mass spectroscopy was also used for evaluating the variations of impurity concentration in the resulting GaN single crystal. Through the detailed investigations, we could confirm that the introduction of a quartz ring during the GaN single crystal growth process using HVPE is a very effective strategy to obtain a high quality GaN single crystal.

For the special usage, the effort of developing AlN single crystals has been very hot in the world. The AlN-base UV LEDs are used on the field of sterilization, purification, curing and analyzing, which can advance human's living and medical processes etc.. AlN single crystals were grown by the PVT (Physical vapor transport) method. On the growing process, carbon crucibles with three different types such as normal size, taller than normal and wider than normal were used for comparison. The processing temperature was in the range of $1900{\sim}2100^{\circ}C$ and ambient pressure was 200~1 Torr. When the taller crucible was used, the sublimation mass was greater than normal dimension one but the best condition of growth changes widely. However the wider one gave much sublimation mass and growing condition was more stable than normal dimension. On limited growing furnace system, the changes of crucible dimension of PVT method provide the change of best condition for growth rate, as-grown crystal quality and growth condition stability.
LiTaO3 single crystals were growth without cracking using Pt-Rh crucible and Ir crucible. The starting composition to get the melt of congruent melting composition, which has been dependent upon the experimental procedure, was taken after fixing the total growing process by the result of preliminary experiments. The Rh contamination from the Pt-Rh crucible was to be neglected if the crystal had been grown under inert atmosphere, which resulted in the crystal color being slightly yellow. This color was decolored after 24 hour's annealing at 1200℃ under air atmosphere. The optimum conditions for the crystal growing and the diameter control were so dependent upon the crucible material in spite of using the crucible of the same size. The liquid-solid interface of LiTaO3 crystal of 1" diameter has been flat if the rotation speed was 45rpm.
YBa2Cu3O7-x(=YBCO) single crystals were grown by flux method and the growing process of crystals was investigated. YBCO and 3BaO-7CuO composition powders were mixed by the ratio of 25 : 75(wt%), and the mixtures were melted at 105$0^{\circ}C$ in a electric furnace with no temperature-gradient. Then the melt was cooled at a rate 2-1$0^{\circ}C$/h in the above furnace. YBCO single crystal plate with average size of $1.5\times$2.0$\times$0.1㎣ were obtained in the cavities between crucible and solidified ingot, and the single crystals were oriented to <001> direction. The ingots of flux parts were analyzed by XRD and EDS for the purpose of presuming the growing process of the crystals. It was assumed that the divorced eutectic reaction, by which YBCO crystals were grown first and then BaCuO2 and CuO crystals, occured in the case of cooling rate faster than 2$^{\circ}C$/h. When the cooling rate was 2$^{\circ}C$/h, it was assumed that quasi-equilibrium eutectic reaction occured, so that YBCO, BaCuO2 and CuO crystals were grown at the same time.

A numerical study was conducted on the optimum magnetic field intensity and asymmetric factor for uniform axial oxygen concentration in 8 inch silicon single crystal growing process by magnetic Czochralski method. For constant shape of cusp field, a change of coil and crucible position were compared. In case of symmetric cusp field, magnetic field intensity variation shows concave downward with crystal growing for uniform, axial oxygen concentration. A numerical results show similar value of standard deviation of average oxygen concentration for uniform oxygen concentration between coil and crucible position change. In case of asymmetric cusp field. asymmetric factor is increased with crystal growing to have uniform oxygen concentration.

Recently sapphire crystals are used in LED applications. The Czochralski (CZ) growth process is one of the most important techniques for growing high quality sapphire single crystal. A successful growth of perfect single crystals requires the control of heat and mass transport phenomena in the CZ growth furnace. In this study, the growth processes of the sapphire crystal in an inductively heated CZ furnace have been analyzed numerically using finite element method. The results shown that the high temperature positions moved from the crucible surface to inside the melt and the crystal-melt interface changed to the flat shape when the rpm was increased. Also the crystal-melt interface shape has been influenced by the shoulder shape of the grown crystal during the initial stage.
SiO2 doped sapphire single crystals were grown by Verneuil method using feed material which prepared by adding SiO2 in Al2O3. Crystal growing were attempted with varing doping amount of SiO2 from 0.01 to 1.0 wt% and when the doping amount of SiO2 were 0.01~0.04 wt%, single crystals could be attained. Starting materials for feed powder were 99.99% purity alumina and extra pure SiO2 powder. Mixing these two materials by wet milling for 24 hours and drying the mixture and then was calcined at 900~110$0^{\circ}C$ for 2~4 hours. The grown crystals had yellowish color and were somewhat transparent. During growing process the flow range of oxygen was 5~7.5ι/min and of hydrogen was 13~25ι/min, the average growth rate was 7.0~11 mm/hr. The pressure of gases were fixed at 5psi. The color of crystal was appeared and mechanical property of sapphire was developed by doping of SiO2.

The heat in Czochralski method is transfered by all transport mechanisms such as convection, conduction and radiation and convection is caused by the temperature difference in the molden pool, the rotations of crystal or crucible and the difference of surface tension. This study delvelops the simulation model of Czochralski growth by using the finite difference method with fixed grids combined with new latent heat treatment model. The radiative heat transfer occured in the surfce of the system is treated by calculating the view factors among surface elements. The model shows that the flow is turbulent, therefore, turbulent modeling must be used to simulate the transport phenomena in the real system applied to 8" Si single crystal growth process. The effects of a cusp magnetic field imposed on the Czochralski silicon melt are studied by numerical analysis. The cusp magnetic field reduces the natural and forced convection due to the rotation of crystal and crucible very effectively. It is shown that the oxygen concentration distribution on the melt/crystal interface is sensitively controlled by the change of the magnetic field intensity. This provides an interesting way to tune the desired O concentration in the crystal during the crystal growing.
