Purpose: Lateral pterygoid muscle (LPM) plays an important role in jaw movement and has been implicated in Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs). Migraine has been described as a common symptom in patients with TMDs and may be related to muscle hyperactivity. This study aimed to compare LPM volume in individuals with and without migraine, using segmentation of the LPM in magnetic resonance (MR) imaging of the TMJ. Materials and Methods: Twenty patients with migraine and 20 volunteers without migraine underwent a clinical examination of the TMJ, according to the Research Diagnostic Criteria for TMDs. MR imaging was performed and the LPM was segmented using the ITK-SNAP 1.4.1 software, which calculates the volume of each segmented structure in voxels per cubic millimeter. The chi-squared test and the Fisher's exact test were used to relate the TMD variables obtained from the MR images and clinical examinations to the presence of migraine. Logistic binary regression was used to determine the importance of each factor for predicting the presence of a migraine headache. Results: Patients with TMDs and migraine tended to have hypertrophy of the LPM (58.7%). In addition, abnormal mandibular movements (61.2%) and disc displacement (70.0%) were found to be the most common signs in patients with TMDs and migraine. Conclusion: In patients with TMDs and simultaneous migraine, the LPM tends to be hypertrophic. LPM segmentation on MR imaging may be an alternative method to study this muscle in such patients because the hypertrophic LPM is not always palpable.

A new high-gain Fabry-$P{\acute{e}}rot$ cavity antenna for wireless broadband internet(Wibro) base station antennas, which is covered with metamaterial superstrate presenting simultaneous negative values of permittivity and permeability, is proposed. To facilitate the fabrication process using the printed circuit board(PCB) technology of today, a new planar-type metamaterial superstrate is designed, which shows negative and low positive values of a refractive index near the Wibro service frequency band. And the principle of antenna gain enhancement is analyzed from the two different view points of effectively low refractive index and of the Fabry-$P{\acute{e}}rot$ resonance condition. Single square patch antenna is used as a feeder. The separation distance is determined by considering the reflection phases of the metamaterial superstrate and the substrate satisfying Fabry-$P{\acute{e}}rot$ resonance condition, respectively. Comparison between the prediction and the measurement shows good agreement, which verifies the validity of our design approach.
This paper presents a new approach to investigate spatial correlation between independent components of brain alpha activity in functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and electroencephalography (EEG). To avoid potential problems of simultaneous fMRI and EEG acquisitions in imaging pure alpha activity, data from each modality were acquired separately under a 'three conditions' setup where one of the conditions involved closing eyes and relaxing, thus making it conducive to generation of alpha activity. The other two conditions -- eyes open in a lighted room or engaged in a mental arithmetic task, were designed to attenuate alpha activity. Using a Mixture Density Independent Component Analysis (MD-ICA) that incorporates flexible non-linearity functions into the conventional ICA framework, we could identify the spatiotemporal components of fMRI activations and EEG activities associated with the alpha rhythm. Then, the sources of the individual EEG alpha activity component were localized by a Maximum Entropy (ME) method that is specially designed to find the most probable dipole distribution minimizing the localization error in sense of LMSE. The resulting active dipoles were spatially transformed to 3D MRls of the subject and compared to fMRI alpha activity maps. A good spatial correlation was found in the spatial distribution of alpha sources derived independently from fMRI and EEG, suggesting the proposed method can localize the cortical areas responsible for generating alpha activity successfully in either fMRI or EEG. Finally a functional connectivity analysis was applied to show that alpha activity sources of both modalities were also functionally connected to each other, implying that they are involved in performing a common function: 'the generation of alpha rhythms'.
In magnetic resonance imaging, the fast spin echo imaging technique is a widely used clinical imaging method. since its scanning time is much shorter than the conventional spin echo imaging and it gives the almost same image quality. However, the fast spin echo technique has two times longer imaging time for the dual echo acquisition which can obtain a spin density image and a T-give the same qulity images at the single echo imaging time. T he proposed technique reduces the imaging time by overlapping most of were obtained at the 0.3T permanent MRI system are presented.
Acute motor axonal neuropathy (AMAN) is a subtype of Guillain-Barre syndrome and characterized by selective involvement of motor fibers. Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) is a demyelinating disease of central nervous system. The coincidence of central and peripheral nervous system involvement has been reported rarely. We described a 37-year-old male patient presented with fever and altered consciousness. The examination of cerebrospinal fluid and brain magnetic resonance imaging was compatible with acute disseminated encephalomyelitis. Several days after admissionb his mentality was improved but quadriparesis, multiple cranial neuropathies, and areflexia were detected. Electrophysiologic studies suggested axonal form of motor dominant polyneuropathy. We report a case of acute motor axonal neuropathy combined with ADEM. We consider that this case is an example of simultaneous immunologic process to the common pathogenic epitope of central nervous system and peripheral nervous system.
Dural tears can occur during spinal surgery and may lead to cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leakage which is rarely involved in remote cerebellar hemorrhage. Only a few of cases of simultaneous cerebral and cerebellar hemorrhage have been reported in the English literature. We experienced a case of multiple remote cerebral and cerebellar hemorrhages in a 63-year-old man who exhibited no significant neurologic deficits after spinal surgery. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) performed 4 days after the surgery showed a large amount of CSF leakage in the lumbosacral space. The patient underwent the second surgery for primary repair of the dural defect, but complained of headache after dural repair surgery. Brain MRI taken 6 days after the dural repair surgery revealed multifocal remote intracerebral and cerebellar hemorrhages in the right temporal lobe and both cerebellar hemispheres. We recommend diagnostic imaging to secure early identification and treatment of this complication in order to prevent serious neurologic deficits.
Among the various welding conditions, the welding current that is inversely proportional to the tip-to-work-piece distance is an essential parameter as to monitor the GMAW process and to implement the welding automation. Considering the weld pool surface geometry including weld defects, it should modify the signal processing method for automatic seam tracking in horizontal fillet welding. To meet the above necessities, a mathematical model related with the weld pool geometry was proposed as in a conjunction with the two-dimensional heat flow analysis of the horizontal fillet welding. The signal processing method based on the artificial neural network (Adaptive Resonance Theory) was proposed for discriminating the sound weld pool surface from that with the weld defects. The reliability of the numerical model and the signal processing method proposed were evaluated through the experiments of which showed that they are effective for predicting the weld bead shape with or without the weld defects in a horizontal fillet welding.
Purpose: To demonstrate arthroscopically the presence of bilateral shoulder "mirror lesions" due to overhead work. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed in a historical cohort of 10 male tire plant workers who underwent MRI studies of both shoulders. Bilateral intraarticular shoulder pathology was diagnosed by magnetic resonance imaging and confirmed by arthroscopy. "Mirror lesions" were defined as similar pathology between an individual patient's two shoulders. Results: We report on ten patients who had bilateral "mirror lesions." The most common mirror lesions were tears of the rotator cuff. Most patients (7 of 10) had more than one mirror lesion in their shoulders. There were two bilateral full thickness tears involving the supraspinatus and infraspinatus, four bilateral partial thickness supraspinatus tears, six bilateral partial or upper corner lesion complete subscapularis tears, and one bilateral complete supraspinatus tear. Conclusion: Occupational overhead work with simultaneous use of both arms is associated with bilateral shoulder lesions verified by arthroscopy. By demonstrating the work-related bilateral shoulder involvement, this study suggests an etiopathogenesis for these lesions and provides rational for developing worksite prevention strategies.

Mirror movements in adult is usually accompanied with various clinical syndromes. But the pathogenesis of mirror movement is not clearly understood. A 20-year-old man visited with complaining of mirror movements in both hands, ophthalmoplegia and sensorineural hearing loss. He underwent through electromyography, transcranial magnetic stimulation, and functional magnetic resonance image. And we concluded that the mechanisms of his mirror movements were both ipsilateral innervated corticospinal tract and simultaneous activation of both motor cortex.
Purpose: To acquire high-resolution spiral-scan images at higher magnetic field, high homogeneous magnetic field is needed. Field inhomogeneity mapping and in-vivo shimming are important for rapid imaging such as spiral-scan imaging. The rapid scanning sequences are very susceptible to inhomogeneity. In this paper, we proposed a higher-order shimming method to obtain homogeneous magnetic field. Materials and Methods: To reduce measurement time for field inhomogeneity mapping, simultaneous axial/ sagittal, and coronal acquisitions are done using multi-slice based Fast Spin echo sequence. Acquired field inhomogeneity map is analyzed using the spherical harmonic functions, and shim currents are obtained by the multiplication of the pseudo-inverse of the field pattern with the inhomogeneity map. Results: Since the field inhomogeneity is increasing in proportion to the magnetic field, higher order shimming to reduce the inhomogeneity becomes more important in high field imaging. The shimming technique in which axial, sagittal, and coronal section inhomogeneity maps are obtained in one scan is developed, and the shimming method based on the analysis of spherical harmonics of the imhomogenity map is applied. The proposed technique is applicable to a localized shimming as well. High resolution spiral-scan imaging was successfully obtained with the proposed higher order shimming. Conclusion: Proposed pulse sequence for rapid measurement of inhomogeneity map and higher order shimming based on the inhomogeneity map work very well at 3 Tesla MRI system. With the proposed higher order shimming and localized higher order shimming techniques, high resolution spiral-scan images are successfully obtained at 3 T MRI system.
