  • The Ponciri fructus immaturus (Poncirus trifoliata Rafinesque) has been used in oriental medicine for uterine contraction, stomachache, abdominal distension and cardiovascular diseases. Two main compounds, poncirin and naringin were successfully analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and carried out method validation according to ICH guideline. A successful resolution and retention times were obtained with a $C_{18}$ reversed phase column, at an $1m{\ell}min^{-1}$ flow rate, with a gradient elution of a mixture of methanol, water and acetonitrile. Poncirin and naringin showed good linearity ($R^2$ > 0.999) in relatively wide concentration ranged. The recovery of each compound was 95.81 ~ 101.48% with R.S.D. values less than 1.0%. The application of ultrasound-assisted extraction was shown to be more efficient in extracting poncirin and naringin from Ponciri fructus immaturus. The predicted optimal poncirin and naringin yield were poncirin 2.15%, naringin 1.65% under an extraction temperature of $40^{\circ}C$, an extraction time of 10 min in a solvent of 70% methanol.

  • Spectral line profiles of filaments/prominences to be observed by the Fast Imaging Solar Spectrograph (FISS) are studied. The main spectral lines of interests are $H{\alpha}$, Ca II 8542, and Ca II K. FISS has a high spectral resolving power of $2{\times}10^5$, and supports simultaneous dual-band recording. This instrument will be installed at the 1.6m New Solar Telescope (NST) of Big Bear Solar Observatory, which has a high spatial resolution of 0.065" at 500nm. Adopting the cloud model of radiative transfer and using the model parameters inferred from pre-existing observations, we have simulated a set of spectral profiles of the lines that are emitted by a filament on the disk or a prominence at the limb. Taking into account the parameters of the instrument, we have estimated the photon count to be recorded by the CCD cameras, the signal-to-noise ratios, and so on. We have also found that FISS is suitable for the study of multi-velocity threads in filaments if the spectral profiles of Ca II lines are recorded together with $H{\alpha}$ lines.

  • The magnetic record of loess deposits may be one of the most detailed and useful records of Quatermary climate change on the continents. Stratigraphic variations of magnetic parameters define alternating zones of high and low concentrations of magnetic minerals. All the concentration-sensitive magnetic parameters show an increase within the interstadial Gilman Canyon Formation and interglacial Brady soil and a systematic decrease within the Wisconsinan Peoria loess. The influence of climate change on magnetic records is confirmed by a high correlation between the magnetic parameters and biological proxies. Rock magnetic data appear to be better correlated with temperature-sensitive biological proxies than does a precipitation-sensitive index such as the aridity index derived from opal phytoliths. Simultaneous, higher resolution sampling of magnetic and biological proxies proved to be a better sampling tactic, and enhanced the feasibility of rock magnetic parameters as independent climate proxies.

  • Background: Simultaneous detection of neutrons and gamma rays have become much more practicable, by taking advantage of good gamma-ray discrimination properties using pulse shape discrimination (PSD) technique. Recently, we introduced a commercial CLYC system in Korea, and performed an initial characterization and simulation studies for the CLYC detector system to provide references for the future implementation of the dual-mode scintillator system in various studies and applications. Materials and Methods: We evaluated a CLYC detector with 95% $^6Li$ enrichment using various gamma-ray sources and a $^{252}Cf$ neutron source, with validation of our Monte Carlo simulation results via measurement experiments. Absolute full-energy peak efficiency values were calculated for gamma-ray sources and neutron source using MCNP6 and compared with measurement experiments of the calibration sources. In addition, behavioral characteristics of neutrons were validated by comparing simulations and experiments on neutron moderation with various polyethylene (PE) moderator thicknesses. Results and Discussion: Both results showed good agreements in overall characteristics of the gamma and neutron detection efficiencies, with consistent ~20% discrepancy. Furthermore, moderation of neutrons emitted from $^{252}Cf$ showed similarities between the simulation and the experiment, in terms of their relative ratios depending on the thickness of the PE moderator. Conclusion: A CLYC detector system was characterized for its energy resolution and detection efficiency, and Monte Carlo simulations on the detector system was validated experimentally. Validation of the simulation results in overall trend of the CLYC detector behavior will provide the fundamental basis and validity of follow-up Monte Carlo simulation studies for the development of our dual-particle imager using a rotational modulation collimator.

  • The relative geostrophic velocity is estimated by using the MCSST(Multi-Channel Sea Surface Temperature) from a NOAA/AVHRR image and applied to the Korea Strait. Remote sensing technique can play a useful role to research for oceanic phenomena because of its synoptic, simultaneous and repetitive viewing. The high resolution data of AVHRR can determine the geostrophic flow more precisely than the hydrographic data on shipboard. As a result of research, the relative geostrophic velocity in the weatern channel of the Korea Strait is the strongest in the trough area and its maximum speed is about 23.8cm/sec in April, 1992. But this results include the error due to neglecting the effect of salinity in estimation the geopotential anomaly. The geostrophic volume transport through the western channel of the Korea Strait is the largest between trough area and the Tsushima Island.

  • Stay cables in some cable-stayed bridges suffer large amplitude vibrations under the simultaneous occurrence of rain and wind. This phenomenon is called rain-wind-induced vibration (RWIV). The upper rivulet oscillating circumferentially on the inclined cable surface plays an important role in this phenomenon. However, its small size and high sensitivity to wind flow make measuring rivulet size and its movement challenging. Moreover, the distribution of the rivulet along the entire cable has not been measured. This paper applies the videogrammetric technique to measure the movement and geometry dimension of the upper rivulet along the entire cable during RWIV. A cable model is tested in an open-jet wind tunnel with artificial rain. RWIV is successfully reproduced. Only one digital video camera is employed and installed on the cable during the experiment. The camera records video clips of the upper rivulet and cable movements. The video clips are then transferred into a series of images, from which the positions of the cable and the upper rivulet at each time instant are identified by image processing. The thickness of the upper rivulet is also estimated. The oscillation amplitude, equilibrium position, and dominant frequency of the rivulet are presented. The relationship between cable and rivulet variations is also investigated. Results demonstrate that this non-contact, non-intrusive measurement method has good resolution and is cost effective.

  • For prompt gamma ray imaging for biomedical applications and environmental radiation monitoring, we propose herein a multiple-scattering Compton camera (MSCC). MSCC consists of three or more semiconductor layers with good energy resolution, and has potential for simultaneous detection and differentiation of multiple radio-isotopes based on the measured energies, as well as three-dimensional (3D) imaging of the radio-isotope distribution. In this study, we developed an analytic simulator and a 3D image generator for a MSCC, including the physical models of the radiation source emission and detection processes that can be utilized for geometry and performance prediction prior to the construction of a real system. The analytic simulator for a MSCC records coincidence detections of successive interactions in multiple detector layers. In the successive interaction processes, the emission direction of the incident gamma ray, the scattering angle, and the changed traveling path after the Compton scattering interaction in each detector, were determined by a conical surface uniform random number generator (RNG), and by a Klein-Nishina RNG. The 3D image generator has two functions: the recovery of the initial source energy spectrum and the 3D spatial distribution of the source. We evaluated the analytic simulator and image generator with two different energetic point radiation sources (Cs-137 and Co-60) and with an MSCC comprising three detector layers. The recovered initial energies of the incident radiations were well differentiated from the generated MSCC events. Correspondingly, we could obtain a multi-tracer image that combined the two differentiated images. The developed analytic simulator in this study emulated the randomness of the detection process of a multiple-scattering Compton camera, including the inherent degradation factors of the detectors, such as the limited spatial and energy resolutions. The Doppler-broadening effect owing to the momentum distribution of electrons in Compton scattering was not considered in the detection process because most interested isotopes for biomedical and environmental applications have high energies that are less sensitive to Doppler broadening. The analytic simulator and image generator for MSCC can be utilized to determine the optimal geometrical parameters, such as the distances between detectors and detector size, thus affecting the imaging performance of the Compton camera prior to the development of a real system.

  • We present BV photometric observations and high-resolution spectra of AO Ser, which were obtained at the Mt. Lemmon Optical Astronomy Observatory (LOAO) and the Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory (BOAO), respectively, in 2017. The radial velocities (RVs) for both components were measured, and the effective temperature of the primary star was found to be $T_{eff,1}=8,820{\pm}62K$ by a comparison of the observed spectra and the Kurucz models. A unique set of fundamental parameters of AO Ser were derived for the first time by a simultaneous analysis of the light and RV curves. The results indicate that our program target is a semi-detached eclipsing system with values of $M_1=2.06{\pm}0.11M_{\odot}$ and $M_2=0.41{\pm}0.03M_{\odot}$, $R_1=1.54{\pm}0.03R_{\odot}$ and $R_2=1.30{\pm}0.02R_{\odot}$, and $L_1=12.9{\pm}0.2L_{\odot}$ and $L_2=0.9{\pm}0.3L_{\odot}$. We applied multiple frequency analyses to the eclipse-subtracted light residuals. As a result, two frequencies of $f_1=21.85151days^{-1}$ and $f_2=23.48405days^{-1}$ were detected and their pulsation constants were calculated to $Q_1=0.0344days$ and $Q_2=0.0320days$. The pulsational characteristics and the position in the HR diagram demonstrate that the primary star is a ${\delta}$ Sct pulsator.

  • Since radar wind profiler (RWP) provides wind field data with high time and space resolution in all weather conditions, their verification of the accuracy and quality is essential. The simultaneous wind measurement from rawinsonde is commonly used to evaluate wind vectors from RWP. In this study, the simulation algorithm which produces the spectrum and raw time series (I/Q) data from the average values of moments is presented as a step-by-step verification method for the signal processing algorithm. The possibility of the simulation algorithm was also confirmed through comparison with the raw data of LAP-3000. The Doppler power spectrum was generated by assuming the density function of the skew-normal distribution and by using the moment values as the parameter. The simulated spectrum was generated through random numbers. In addition, the coherent averaged I/Q data was generated by random phase and inverse discrete Fourier transform, and raw I/Q data was generated through the Dirichlet distribution.

  • The method of measuring and classifying the energy category of neutrons directly using raw data acquired through a CZT detector is not satisfactory, in terms of accuracy and efficiency, because of its poor energy resolution and low measurement efficiency. Moreover, this method of measuring and analyzing the characteristics of low-energy or low-activity gamma-ray sources might be not accurate and efficient in the case of neutrons because of various factors, such as the noise of the CZT detector itself and the influence of environmental radiation. We have therefore developed an efficient method of analyzing radiation characteristics using a neutron and gamma-ray analysis algorithm for the rapid and clear identification of the type, energy, and radioactivity of gamma-ray sources as well as the detection and classification of the energy category (fast or thermal neutrons) of neutron sources, employing raw data acquired through a CZT detector. The neutron analysis algorithm is based on the fact that in the energy-spectrum channel of 558.6 keV emitted in the nuclear reaction 113Cd + 1n → 114Cd + in the CZT detector, there is a notable difference in detection information between a CZT detector without a PE modulator and a CZT detector with a PE modulator, but there is no significant difference between the two detectors in other energy-spectrum channels. In addition, the gamma-ray analysis algorithm uses the difference in the detection information of the CZT detector between the unique characteristic energy-spectrum channel of a gamma-ray source and other channels. This efficient method of analyzing radiation characteristics is expected to be useful for the rapid radiation detection and accurate information collection on radiation sources, which are required to minimize radiation damage and manage accidents in national disaster situations, such as large-scale radioactivity leak accidents at nuclear power plants or nuclear material handling facilities.
