  • This paper describes the optimum design for journal bearing by using simulated annealing method. Simulated annealing algorithm is an optimum design method to calculate global and local optimum solution. Dynamic characteristics of a journal bearing are calculated by using finite difference method (FDM), and these values are used for the procedure of journal bearing optimization. The objective is to minimize the resonance response (Q factor) of the simple rotor system. Bearing clearance and length to diameter ratio are used as the design variables.

  • In this paper, we propose the fast simulated annealing algorithm to decrease convergence rate in image segmentation using MRF. Simulated annealing algorithm has a good performance in noisy image or texture image, But there is a problem to have a long convergence rate. To fad a solution to this problem, we have labeled each pixel adaptively according to its intensity before simulated annealing. Then, we show the superiority of proposed method through experimental results.

  • The layout design of component plays an important role in the design and usability of many engineering products. The Engineering artifacts of today are becoming increasingly complicated. The simulated annealing method has been applied effectively to the layout and packing problems of wafer. The main characteristics of simulated annealing method is that an optimum can be obtained from the many local optimums by controlling the temperature and introducing the statistic flickering. The objective of this study is to suggest a method to apply the simulated annealing method to the three dimensional layout design of submergible boat which has multiple constraint conditions and evaluation criteria. We describe an approach to define cost function, constraints and generate layouts using a computer. In this research three dimensional LAYout Design Optimization Program(LAYDOP ver.2) has been developed. The layout result(the total value of evaluation criteria) designed by a human layout expert has been improved by 31.0% using this program.

  • Optimization of a satellite structure under severe space launching environments is performed considering various design constraints. Simulate annealing, one of combinatorial optimization techniques, is used to optimize the satellite. The optimization results by the simulated annealing are compared to those by the method of modified feasible direction and genetic algorithm. Ten bar truss structure is optimized for feasibility study of the simulated annealing. Finally, the satellite structure is optimized by the simulated annealing algorithm under space environment. Weights of the satellite upper platform and propulsion module are minimized with consideration of several static and dynamic constraints. MSC/NASTRAN is used to find the static and dynamic responses. Simulated annealing has been programmed and integrated with the finite element analysis program for optimization. It is shown that the simulated annealing algorithm can be extended to the optimization of space structures.

  • Genetic algorithm is modelled on natural evolution and simulated annealing is based on the simulation of thermal annealing. Both genetic algorithm and simulated annealing are stochastic method. So they can find global optimum values. For compare efficiency of SA and GA's, some function value was maximized. In the result, that was a little better than GA's.

  • The fuzzy controllers have been applied to the power system stabilizer due to its excellent properties on the nonlinear systems. But the design process of fuzzy controller requires empirical and heuristic knowledge of human experts as well as many trial-and-errors in general. This process is time consuming task. This paper presents an parameters tuning method of the fuzzy power system stabilizer using the genetic algorithm and simulated annealing(SA). The proposed method searches the local minimum point using the simulated annealing algorithm. The proposed method is applied to the one-machine infinite-bus of a power system. Through the comparative simulation with conventional stabilizer and fuzzy stabilizer tuned by genetic algorithm under various operating conditions and system parameters, the robustness of fuzzy stabilizer tuned by proposed method with respect to the nonlinear power system is verified.

  • There is a deep and useful connection between thermodynamics (the behavior of systems with many degrees of freedom in thermal equilibrium at a finite temperature) and combinational or continuous optimization (finding the minimum of a given multiparameter function). At the heart of the method of simulated annealing is an analogy with the way that liquids freeze and crystallize, or metals cool and anneal. This paper provides a detailed description of simulated annealing. Although computationaly intensive, when it is carefully implemented, simulated annealing is found to give superior results to more traditional methods of nonlinear optimization.

  • A modified simulated annealing algorithm is proposed and applied to the permutation flowshop scheduling with the makespan objective. Based on the job deletion and insertion method, a newly defined Max-min perturbation scheme is proposed to obtain a better candidate solution in the simulated annealing process. The simulation experiments are conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm against the existing heuristics and results are reported.

  • Graph Coloring Problem(GCP) is a problem of assigning different colors to nodes which are connected by an edge. An extended form of GCP is TCP (T-coloring problem) and, in TCP, edge weights are added to GCP and it is possible to extend GCP's applications. To solve TCP, in this paper, we propose an improved Simulated Annealing(SA) method with search space smoothing. It has been observed that the improved SA method obtains better results than SA does.
