Total pressure losses required to calculate the total-to-total efficiency are estimated by integrating empirical loss coefficients of four loss mechanisms along the mean-line of blades as follows; blade profile loss, secondary flow loss, end wall loss and tip clearance loss. The off-design points are obtained on the basis of Howell's off-design performance of a compressor cascade. Also, inlet-outlet air angles and camber angle are obtained from semi-empirical relations of transonic airfoils' minimum loss incidence and deviation angles. And nominal point is replaced by the design point. It is concluded that relatively simple loss models and Howell's off-design data permit us to calculate the off-design performance with satisfactory accuracy. And this method can be easily extended for off-design performance prediction of multi-stage compressors.

A cross-flow fan often generates discrete noise call blade passing frequency tones. Several methods have been investigated to reduce this BPF noise, where the random distribution of blades is the most promising one. A simple and effective algorithm to determine a random distribution of blades is proposed which considers fan. performance as well as noise characteristics. The proposed method is verified by a simple numerical model and is applied in manufacturing cross-flow fan samples. Also some experiments are carried out and the experimental results are analyzed.
Substantial losses behind axial flow rotor are generated by the wake, various vortices in the hub region and the tip leakage vortex in the tip region. Particularly, the leakage vortex formed near blade tip is one of the main causes of the reduction of performance, generation of noise and aerodynamic vibration in downstream. In this study, the three-dimensional flow fields in an axial flow rotor were calculated with varying tip clearance under various flow rates, and the numerical results were compared with experimental ones. The numerical technique was based on SIMPLE algorithm using standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ model(WFM) and Launder & Sharma's Low Reynolds Number $k-{\varepsilon}$ model(LRN). Through calculations, the effects of tip clearance and attack angle on the 3-dimensional flow fileds behind a rotor and leakage flow/vortex were investigated. The presence of tip leakage vortex, loci of vortex center and its behavior behind the rotor for various tip clearances and attack angles was described well by calculation.

The numerical technique was based on SIMPLE algorithm using standard k-.epsilon. model (WFM). Through calculations, the effects of the tip clearance on the overall performance of rotor and the loss distributions, and the increase in the displacement, momentum, and blade-force-deficit thickness of the casing wall boundary layer were investigated. The mass-averaged flow variables behind rotor agreed well with the experimental results. The presence of the tip leakage vortex behind rotor was described well. Although the loci of leakage vortex by calculation showed some differences compared with the experimental results, its behavior for various tip clearances was clarified by examining the loci of vortex center.
Despite of the simple equipment and operation, DMT has been widely used to obtain various soil parameters and those parameters have been successfully applied to geotechnical design practice. Among them, the estimation of horizontal coefficient of consolidation is so useful that many researchs recently have been carried out. However, simulation of the penetration of the DMT blade is complex due to the inherent difficulty on analyzing a plane strain deformation of the soil around blade. Therefore, empirical and semi-empirical methods that use the theoretical solution developed fur piezocone with some assumptions have been used to estimate the coefficient of consolidation from Dilatometer dissipation test. In this paper, coefficients of consolidation c$\_$h/ which were obtained using equivalent radius that is same area with the DMT blade and optimization technique are compared with those obtained from Oedometer test and other interpretation methods. It was found that a new method used in this study can give more precise horizontal coefficient of consolidation than other methods do.
Viscous flow around a front end cooling fan of the car is numerically investigated. The Navier-Stokes equations and the continuity equation are solved in the flow domain. The Reynolds stresses are modelled using the $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model. The governing equations are discretized with the Finite Volume Method. The pressure and the velocity are linked with the SIMPLE algorithm. Flow and pressure characteristics around the fan are investigated. The pressure sharply increases through the fan blade. Pressure variations on the pressure and suction sides of the fan are well represened in the calculations. The flow streamlines in the blade passage are nearly parallel to the blade, but the slope of streamlines increases near the tip.

Mixers are used in several industrial applications where it is necessary to strongly mix reactants in a short period of time (eg. reaction injection molding, ceramics manufacturing, crystallization). However, despite their widespread use, mixing flow characteristics in these systems have not been rigorously investigated. Influence of blade shapes on the mixing time and the power consumption per unit volume in two kinds of impeller including the mixing effects are studied by PIV experiment. A series of the experiments were carried out to achieve a better mixing effect in simple baffle arrangement and tall vessel with modified impellers(two kinds of blades : pitched blade turbine and rushton turbine). Results show that periodic vortex from the mixing layer is predominant and related unsteady flow characteristics prevail over the entire region.
Wind turbine system converts wind energy into electric energy. Since the velocity of wind is random in nature, control of the angular velocity of the blade is necessary in order to generate high quality electric power. The control of a blade can be divided into a stall regulation and a pitch control types. The stall regulation type which is based on the characteristics of an aerodynamic stall of the blades is simple and cheap, but it suffers from fluctuation of the resulting power. Or the contrary, pitch control type is based on the fact that the torque of the blade can be changed by varying the pitch angle of the blade. It is mechanically and mathematically complicated, but the control performance is better than that of the stall regulation type. This paper suggests a method of denying a mathematical modeling of the wind turbine system, and develops a speed control algorithm by pitch control. The validity of the algorithm is demonstrated with the results produced through sets of simulation.
In this paper, a pico hydro turbine employing low head circulation water at fish farms is designed and evaluated. Due to the advantages of simple structures, small head requirements, and low-cost investment, the constant thickness propeller turbine is considered as a feasible solution. The design process based on the free vortex method is presented in full detail, and a 4-blade runner is built using BladeGen. The turbine performance is analyzed both numerically and via experimental methods. Despite slight differences, the results show similar trends between CFD simulations and experiments carried out on factory test-rigs in a wide range of working conditions. At the design flow rate, the turbine achieves the best efficiency of 70 %, generating 3.5 kW power when rotating at 420 rpm. The internal flow field, as well as the turbine's behavior, are investigated through the distribution of blade streamlines, pressure, and velocity around the runner. Moreover, the pressure coefficient on the blade surface at 3 span positions is plotted while the head loss for each simulation domain is calculated and displayed by charts.

The paper concerns the description of the step by step development process of the new fixed blade runner called "Mixer" suitable for the uprating of the Francis turbines units installed at the older low head hydropower plants. In the paper the details of hydraulic and mechanical design are presented. Since the rotational speed of the new runner is significantly higher then the rotational speed of the original Francis one, the direct coupling of the turbine to the generator can be applied. The maximum efficiency at prescribed operational point was reached by the geometry optimization of two most important components. In the first step the optimization of the draft tube geometry was carried out. The condition for the draft tube geometry optimization was to design the new geometry of the draft tube within the original bad draft tube shape without any extensive civil works. The runner blade geometry optimization was carried out on the runner coupled with the draft tube domain. The blade geometry of the runner was optimized using automatic direct search optimization procedure. The method used for the objective function minimum search is a kind of the Nelder-Mead simplex method. The objective function concerns efficiency, required net head and cavitation features. After successful hydraulic design the modal and stress analysis was carried out on the prototype scale runner. The static pressure distribution from flow simulation was used as a load condition. The modal analysis in air and in water was carried out and the results were compared. The final runner was manufactured in model scale and it is going to be tested in hydraulic laboratory. Since the turbine with the fixed blade runner does not allow double regulation like in case of full Kaplan turbine, it can be profitably used mainly at power plants with smaller changes of operational conditions or in case with more units installed. The advantages are simple manufacturing, installation and therefore lower expenses and short delivery time for turbine uprating.
