  • Numerical analysis of two dimensional incompressible laminar free jet flow was carried out by using finite difference SMAC scheme. Flow characteristics of free jet flow such as jet width, similarity of jet velocity and hypothetical origin were investigated for different Reynolds numbers of Re=30 and 100. The reliability of predictions were confirmed by comparison with exact solution. Non-dimensional velocity distribution showed similarity of jet flow velocity after initial region. In the region of laminar flow, the location of hypothetical origin becomes more distant with Reynolds number.

  • Image classification needs the spectral similarity comparison between spectral features of each pixel and the representative spectral features of each class. The spectral similarity is obtained by computing the spectral feature vector distance between the pixel and the class. Each spectral feature contributes differently in the image classification depending on the class separability of the spectral feature, which is computed using a suitable vector distance measure such as the Bhattacharyya distance. We propose a method to determine the weight value of each spectral feature in the computation of feature vector distance for the similarity measurement. The weight value is determined by the ratio between each feature separability value to the total separability values of all the spectral features. We created ten spectral features consisting of seven bands of Landsat-8 OLI image and three indices, NDVI, NDWI and NDBI. For three experimental test sites, we obtained the overall accuracies between 95.0% and 97.5% and the kappa coefficients between 90.43% and 94.47%.

  • One of the inherent problems in constructing the sign language dictionary is how to make retrieval and comparison operations on the visual database of signs. This paper describes a retrieval method, especifically for Japanese signs. This method has a useful capability for flexible retrieval of the sign from a bilingual dictionary. Our method can retrieve similar signs to the given input. The retrieval mechanism is essentially based on similarity between the given verbal description and verbal descriptions in a retrieval database. The similarity measure of verbal descriptions can be considered as the approximations for the similarity of sign motion images. As a results of our experiment, the success ratio of the retrievals is 96% in averages.

  • In an environment where manufacturing conditions such as product lines keep changing, manufacturing control systems need to be continually maintained and upgraded according to the change. This requires an effective system implementation methodology. In this paper, a methodology based on the multi-criteria similarity comparison of manufacturing processes is proposed. A newly introduced process is compared with existing ones based on the multi-criteria similarity, and candidates for software reuse are selected from stored modules according to the overall process characteristics. The proposed methodology has been tested for an electronics manufacturing company's manufacturing control system, and the result has been satisfactory in that it can save time and efforts for system implementation.

  • As a result of AMI rapidly expanding and distributing its products, variety of services that utilize data on the use of electricity are increasing. In order to make these services more effective, missing metric data needs to be corrected, compensating for which Euclidean similarity is used to find customers with similar usage patterns. Throughout such a process, we propose a method for correcting missing data and provide comparison with the preceding methods.

  • It has been confirmed that two dendrograms resulted from two similarity matrices, average taxonomic distance and correlation coefficient matrices, are different with each other when cluster analyses were performed with 571 adults of deer mice, Peromyscus maniculatus using 30 morphometric characters. To choose one of two similarity matrices mentioned above in order to construct a dendrogram representing phenetic relationships among taxa, an objective method using the result from principal component analysis as a standard result to compare with two matrices has been suggested.

  • In this paper, we introduce a system for evaluating similarity of C program source code using method which compares syntax-trees each others. This method supposes two characteristic features as against other systems. It is not sensitive for program style such as indentation, white space, and comments, and changing order of control structure like sentences, code block, procedures, and so on. Another is that it can detect a syntax-error cause of using paring technique, We introduce algorithms for similarity evaluation method and grouping method that reduces the number of comparison, In the examination section, we show a test result of program similarity evaluation and its reduced iteration by grouping algorithm.

  • In this paper, we provide a development and evaluation method for an archery posture analyzing system, using an inertial sensor. The system was developed using LabVIEW2014 by National Instruments and evaluated using the DTW algorithm. To convert the voltage value of the inertial sensor into a physical value, a coordinate transformation matrix bias was applied. To evaluate the similarity of movement in archery shooting, the DTW distance was calculated and similarity was confirmed based on simple mechanical movement, the same person's shooting movement, shooting movement with another person, and the noise signal. The average similarity comparison results were as follows: simple mechanical movement was 17.05%, the same person's shooting movement was 26.48%, shooting movement with another person was 62.8%, and the noise signal was 328.5%; a smaller value indicates a higher level of similarity. We confirmed the possibility of analyzing the archery posture using 3-axis acceleration of the inertial sensor. We inferred that the proposed method might be important means for assessing shooting skills, evaluation of archer's progress, and finding talented archers in advance.

  • This study proposes a method of feature point extraction using scale-space filtering and a feature point tracking algorithm based on a texturedness similarity comparison, With well-defined operators one can select a scale parameter for feature point extraction; this affects the selection and localization of the feature points and also the performance of the tracking algorithm. This study suggests a feature extraction method using scale-space filtering, With a change in the camera's point of view or movement of an object in sequential images, the window of a feature point will have an affine transform. Traditionally, it is difficult to measure the similarity between correspondence points, and tracking errors often occur. This study also suggests a tracking algorithm that expands Shi-Tomasi-Kanade's tracking algorithm with texturedness similarity.

  • XML has become a standard for data representation and exchange on the Internet. With a large number of XML documents on the Web, there is an increasing need to automatically process those structurally rich documents for information retrieval, document management, and data mining applications. In this paper, we propose a new method to measure the similarity between XML documents by considering their structures and contents. The similarity of document's structure is found by a simple string matching technique and that of document's contents is found by weights taking into account of the names and positions of elements. The overall algorithm runs in time that is linear in the combined size of the two documents involved in comparison evaluation.
