Purpose: We examined patients to evaluate the clinical results of traumatic metacarpophalangeal(M-P) dislocations of the thumb, uncommon and irreducible. Materials and Methods: In 11 traumatic M-P dislocations of the thumb, the types of dislocations were 10 dorsal and 1 volar dislocations resulted from the impacted and hyperextended forces on thumb. Authors evaluated the possibility of closed reduction, the anatomical structures interfering with closed reduction, and the surgical approaches. Results: Eight cases were treated with open reduction through volar approach and two cases were treated with closed reduction. Joint fusion was done with a plate in a chronic case. Initial closed reduction was attempted in all cases, but succeeded in only 2 cases because the interposed ruptured volar plate, the flexor pollicis brevis tendon and ulnar sesamoid bone at the volar side of the M-Pjoint were the obstacles to reduce. The metacarpal head was caught in button-hole slit between theflexor pollicis brevis and the ruptured volar joint capsule in all cases. Conclusion: Similar with the M-P joint dislocations of other fingers, the dorsal complex M-P dislocations of the thumb due to hyper extension are unusual and can't easily be reduced by closed manipulation. It is necessary to pay attention to the ruptured volar plate, capsule, the subluxated portion ofthe sesamoid and flexor pollicis brevis as interfering structures.
This study was orchestrated with the purpose of uncovering new nutraceutical resources possessing biological activities in the plant kingdom. To fulfill our objective, we analyzed several Chinese plants and selected three possessing powerful anti-oxidative activities. The anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory effects these three Chinese plants, Malus hupehensis, Ophiorrhiza cantonensis, and Psychotria rubra ethanol extracts were then evaluated. First of all, they possessed potent scavenging activity against 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl, similar with that of ascorbic acid, used as a positive control. Moreover, they inhibited lipopolysaccharide (LPS)- and hydrogen peroxide-induced reactive oxygen species, in a dose-dependent manner, in RAW 264.7 cells. Also, they induced the expression of an anti-oxidative enzyme, heme oxygenase 1, and its upstream transcription factor, nuclear factor-E2-related factor 2. Furthermore, they suppressed LPS-induced nitric oxide (NO) formation, without cytotoxicity. The inhibition of NO formation was the result of the down regulation of inducible NO synthase (iNOS). The suppression of NO and iNOS by the three extracts might be the result of modulation by the upstream transcription factors, nuclear factor ${\kappa}B$ and activator protein-1. Taken together, these results indicate that these three Chinese plants possess potent anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory activities. Therefore, they might be utilized as promising materials in the field of nutraceuticals.

Components of polysaccharides isolated from ascidian tunic were measuerd by gel filtration, electrophoresis and chemical analyses. The sulfated polysaccharides consisted in sulfate, protein, uronic acid and amino sugars. Hexosamines were composed of arabinose, xylose, glucose, galactose, glucuronic acid, N-acetylgalactosamine and N-acetylglucosamine by gas chromatography analysis. The galactose was predominant hexose after autoclave and nutrase digestion followed by DEAE-cellulose ion exchange chromatography and gel-permeation chromatography on Sephadex G-100 and G-25. FT-IR spectra of isolated polysaccharides from ascidian tunic and standard chondroitin sulfates have similar functional groups of the type of vibration and frequency. Molecular weight of isolated polysaccharides by autoclave represented more than 40 kDa by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. But the neutrase treatment group divided into three band. The highest molecular band group was shown more than 100 kDa, and the two low molecular band group were shown about 22 kDa and 5 kDa, respectively, compare to standard materials.
Mechanical properties and microleakage of two composites [conventional hybrid type DenFil (VERICOM Co., Anyang, Korea) / micro matrix hybrid type Esthet X (Dentsply Caulk, Milford, DE, U.S.A.)] were evaluated to assess whether variable light intensity curing is better than conventional curing technique. Curing was done for 40 seconds in two ways of 2 step soft-start technique and 5 step ramping technique. Three kinds of light intensities of 50, 100, $200{\;}mW/\textrm{cm}^2$ were initially used for 10, 20, 30 seconds each and the maximum intensity of $600 {\;}mW/\textrm{cm}^2$ was used for the rest of curing time in a soft-start curing tech nique. In a ramping technique, curing was done with the same initial intensities and the light intensity was increased 5 times with the same rate to the maximum intensity of $600{\;}mW/\textrm{cm}^2$. After determining conditions that showed no different mechanical properties with conventional technique, Esthet X composite was filled in a class V cavity, which dimension was $4{\times}3{\times}1.5{\;}mm$ and cured under those conditions. Microleakage was evaluated in two ways of dye penetration and maximum gap estimation through SEM observation. ANOVA and Spearman's rho test were used to confirm any statistical significance among groups. The results were as follows : 1 Several curing conditions of variable light intensities resulted in the similar mechanical properties with a conventional continuous curing technique, except conditions that start curing with an initial light intensity of $50{\;}mW/\textrm{cm}^2$. 2. Conventional and ramping techniques were better than soft-start technique in mechanical properties of microhardness and compressive strength. 3. Soft-start group that started curing with an initial light intensity of $100{\;}mW/\textrm{cm}^2$ for 10 seconds showed the least dye penetration. Soft-start group that started curing with an initial light intensity of $200{\;}mW/\textrm{cm}^2$ for 10 seconds showed the smallest marginal gap, if there was no difference among groups. 4. Soft-start technique resulted in better dye-proof margin than conventional technique(p=0.014) and ramping technique(p = 0.002). 5. There was a very low relationship(p=0.157) between the methods of dye penetration and marginal gap determination through SEM evaluation. From the results of this study, it was revealed that ramping technique would be better than conventional technique in mechanical properties, however, soft-start technique might be better than conventional one in microleakage. It was concluded that much endeavor should be made to find out the curing conditions, which have advantages of both aspects or to solve these kinds of problems through a novel idea of polymerization.

We conducted this study to develop a high value black garlic Makgeolli that was made of black garlic extract (BGE) and Sulgidduk. We investigated the quality characteristics of Makgeolli made with three different combinations of materials (control, Sulgidduk only; A, Sulgidduk combined with 15% BGE and water; B, Sulgidduk combined with 15% BGE instead of water). The pH of A and B were higher than the control, but the titratable acidity of A and B were lower. The sugar and alcohol contents of A and B increased during fermentation. A similar growth pattern was observed invisible cells, yeast, and lactic acid bacteria in all three Makgeolli. In A and B, the quantity of lactic acid bacteria was relatively higher than the yeast. The L value (lightness) was highest in the control, and the a value (redness) and b value (yellowness) were higher in A and B. The antioxidant properties of the three types of Makgeolli were evaluated using DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) and ABTS (2,2'-azino-bis[3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid]) radical scavenging activities. In these assays, B showed significantly higher radical scavenging activities than the other two Makgeolli.

For centuries, Panax ginseng Meyer (Korean ginseng) has been widely used as a medicinal herb in Korea, China, and Japan. Ginsenosides are a class of triterpene saponins and recognized as the bioactive components in Korean ginseng. Ginsenosides, which can be classified broadly as protopanaxadiols (PPD), protopanaxatriols (PPT), and oleanolic acids, have been shown to flaunt a vast array of pharmacological activities such as immune-modulatory, anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, anti-diabetic, and antioxidant effects. In recent years, a number of ginseng and ginsenoside researches have increasingly gained wide attention owing to its unique pharmacological properties. Although good efficacies of ginsenosides have been reported, lack of target specific delivery into tumor sites, low solubility, and low bioavailability due to modifications in gastro-intestinal environments limit their biomedical application in clinical trials. As a result to this major challenge, nanotechnology and drug delivery techniques play a significant role to solve this problematic issue. Thus, we reported the preparation of poly-ethylene glycol (PEG) and glycol chitosan (GC) functionalized to ginsenoside (Compound K and PPD) conjugates via hydrolysable ester bonds with improved aqueous solubility and pH-dependent drug release. In vitro cytotoxicity assays revealed that PEG-CK, and PPD-CK conjugates exhibited lower cytotoxicity compared to bare CK and PPD in HT29 cells. However, GC-CK conjugates exhibited higher and similar cytotoxicity in HT29 and HepG2 cells. Furthermore, GC-CK-treated RAW264.7 cells did not exhibit significant cell death at higher concentration of treatment which supports the biocompatibility of the polymer conjugates. They also inhibited nitric oxide production in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced RAW64.7 cells. In addition to polymer-ginsenoside conjugates, silver (AgNps) and gold nanoparticles (AuNps) have been successfully synthesized by green chemistry using different m. The biosynthesized nanoparticles demonstrated antimicrobial efficacy, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant activity, biofilm inhibition, and anticoagulant effect. Special interest on the effective delivery methods of ginsenoside to treatment sites is the focus of metal nanoparticle research. In short, nano-sizing of ginsenoside results in an increased water solubility and bioavailability. The use of nano-sized ginsenoside and P. ginseng mediated metallic nanoparticles is expected to be effective on medical platform against various diseases in the future.

The particulate type silicon carbide (SiC) and fiber type carbon fiber (CF) filler, of similar thermal conductivities, were mixed with polyetheretherketone (PEEK) to investigate the filler effects on the thermal diffusivity. The SiC and CF fillers had a good and uniform dispersion in PEEK matrix. Thermal diffusivities of PEEK composites were measured from ambient temperature up to $200^{\circ}C$ by laser flash method. The diffusivities were decreased as increasing temperature due to the phonon scattering between PEEK-filler and filler-filler interfaces. Thermal diffusivity of PEEK composites was increased with increasing filler content and the thermal conductivities of two-phase system were compared to the experimental results and it gave ideas on the filler dispersion, orientation, aspect ratio, and filler-filler interactions. Nielson equation gave a good prediction to the experimental results of PEEK/SiC. The easy network formation by CF was found to be substantially more effective than SiC and it gave a higher thermal diffusivities of PEEK/CF than PEEK/SiC.

Red clay has been used for making rakuyaki for the past 400 years. Because the resources for red clay in Japan are being depleted, many potters in Japan began to develop new materials which can replace red clay. In this study, It is analyzed that the chemical and physical properties of red clay from Shigaraki (Shiga, Japan), and developed a novel engobe which can be used for making Rakuyaki instead of Shigaraki red clay. Results from Raman spectroscopic examination showed that ferric oxide content in Shigaraki red clay is 9.4 % (Goethite 5 %, Wustite 4.4 %), and that the mechanism of red color development by the firing at $900^{\circ}C$ for 10 min is the chemical transformation of Goethite into Hematite, and the subsequent formation of solid solution with Alumina and Silica. To make similar ferric oxide content to that of Shigaraki red clay, we added 5 g of Goethite and 9 g of Wustite to 100 g of White kaolin from Hadong area (Gyeongsangnam-do, Korea). The $L^*a^*b^*$ color scale of the mixture was 56.83, 27.22, and 23.28, respectively, and stable red color was successfully developed under the same firing condition used for Shigaraki red clay.

As open source can reduce costs and apply to various fields rapidly, many countries have actively adopted open source. However, geo-spatial open source in Korea is not actively promoted yet comparing to other countries having similar infra environments. In this study, we analyzed the perception of geo-spatial open source, utilization status, the development possibility and future direction using questionnaire survey completed by experts dealing with spatial information. The survey result shows that many experts have experiences of using geo-spatial open source but they got a lack of understanding about open source license or regulations and only a few people got professional training. Insufficient references, the difficulty of maintenance, lack of support and low technical reliability have hindered the adoption of geo-spatial open source. Only some part of geo-spatial open source software or libraries in some field have been used in the country. However, many researchers rate highly development potential and plan to use geo-spatial open source soon. If user's convenience, reference materials, technical trust and policy support are improved, open source field for spatial information will be developed greatly in the future.
The optimum analytical method of aldehydes, ozone by-products, was established by reverse phase liquid chromatography. Six aldehydes including formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, acrolein, propionaldehyde, butylaldehyde and benzaldehyde, and one ketone including acetone were selected as aldehyde test samples through preliminary experiments. Such analytical conditions as the pH of citrate buffer solution, reaction temperature, reaction time, and concentration of DNPH, the component and composition of desorption solvent were optimized. As the result, pH 3.0 of citrate buffer solution, 40$^{\circ}C$ of reaction temperature, 15 minutes of reaction time, and 0.012% of DNPH concentration were chosen as optimum conditions. Aldehydes-DNPH derivatives in water were concentrated on $C_18$ Sep-Pak cartridge and followed by elution of their derivatives fraction with THF/ACN(70/30) mixture, and showed recoveries of the range from 87 to 107%. Separation condition on Nova-Pak $C_18$ column with low pressure gradient elution from ACN/MeOH/water(30/10/60) of an initial condition to 80% ACN of a final condition was found to give a good resolution within 20 minutes of run time. 86% to 103% of recovery for aldehydes using this method was similar to that for aldehyde using EPA Method 554 which is ranged from 84% to 103%.
