Estimating the Glass Transition of Oligosaccharides Mixtures through the State Diagram

  • State diagram of highly concentrated branched oligosaccharides (HBOS) was constructed to better understand phase behavior of mixtures with different size of oligosaccharides. It showed dramatic plasticizing effect on glass transition, which was successfully described based on Couchman-Karasz equation model. $T_g$' estimated from state diagram corresponded well with previous empirical data measured by maximum ice formation through isothermal holding (annealing) process. Estimated $T_g$' and $C_g$' values were $-36.3^{\circ}C$ and 79.99%, respectively. $T_g$' value of HBOS was approximately $10^{\circ}C$ higher than that of sucrose, while $C_g$' value was similar to those of general carbohydrate materials, which could be useful for applications in frozen system.

  • The separation of rare earths minerals is very difficult because of their similar chemical properties. The rare earth minerals are used as the mixed rare earth minerals or the misch metal without separation to each element. However, the high purity rare earths are recently produced commercially to each element so they there are used as the materials for high tech. Based on the characterization results for the raw minerals, we have developed a combined process containing gravity seperation, magnetic seperation and flotation. The result obtained from this study is monazite concentration of TREO grade 69.11% and Recovery 56.02%.

Conductance of a Single Molecule Junction Formed with Ni, Au, and Ag Electrodes

  • We measure the conductance of a 4,4'-diaminobiphenyl formed with Ni electrodes using a scanning tunneling microscope-based break-junction technique. For comparison, we use Au or Ag electrodes to form a metal-molecular junction. For molecules that conduct through the highest occupied molecular orbital, junctions formed with Ni show similar conductance as Au and are more conductive than those formed with Ag, consistent with the higher work function for Ni or Au. Furthermore, we observe that the measured molecular junction length that is formed with the Ni or Au electrodes was shorter than that formed with the Ag electrodes. These observations are attributed to a larger gap distance of the Ni or Au electrodes compared to that of the Ag electrodes after the metal contact ruptures. Since our work allows us to measure the conductance of a molecule formed with various electrodes, it should be relevant to molecular electronics with versatile materials.

The Spider Fauna of Is. Dae Heucksan-do and Is. Hong-do, Korea (대흑산도와 홍도의 거미상)

  • Is. Dae Heucksan-do and Is. Heucksan-do and Is. Hong-do are located in the southwestern, apart 110km from Mockpo city, Korea., and the spider fauna of this area has never been explored. The author collected the spiders from these Islands in August 1974. Findings were; 1) 83 species of spiders belonging to 17 families, including 5 undetermined species. 2) Leptoneta sp., Carrhotus sp. (A), Marpissa sp. and Synagelides sp. are reserved for future study. 3) The materials were not sufficient for general discussion and conclusions of the spider fauna of these Islands. However, results can be summarized as follows: 7 northern species $8.9\%$ 9 southern species $11.5\%$, 4 cosmopolitan $5.1\%$ 4) The common species of mainland China were 41 $51.9\%$. 5) As the result of this survey, the spider fauna of this area is similar to that of the Is. Cheju-do and Is. Tsushima, in the south eastern area, and have much more common to China than any another area in Korea.

  • Abrasive blaster is similar to sand blaster, and effectively removes hard and brittle materials. Exiting abrasive blaster has applied to rough working such as deburring and rough finishing. As the need for machining of ceramics, semiconductor, electronic devices and LCD are increasing, micro abrasive blaster was developed, and became the inevitable technique to micromachining. This paper describes the performance of the micro blaster in MEMS process of glass and succeed in domestically producing complete micro blaster. Diameter of hole and width of line in this etching is 100 ${\mu}m$ ~ 1000 ${\mu}m$. Experimental results showed good performance in micro channel and hole in glass wafer. Therefore, this micro blaster could be effectively applied to the micro machining of semiconductor, micro PCR chip.

  • Three kinds of viscoelastic damper model, which has a non-linear spring as an element is studied analytically and numerically The behavior of the damper model shows non-linear hysteresis curves which is qualitatively similar to those of real viscoelastic materials. The motion is governed by a non-linear constitutive equation and an additional equation of motion. Harmonic balance method is applied to get analytical solutions of the system. The frequency-response curves sallow that multiple solutions co-exist and that the jump phenomena can occur. In addition, it is shown that separate solution branch exists and that it can merge with the primary response curve. Saddle-node bifurcation sets explain the occurrences of such non-linear Phenomena.

The behavior of the damper model shows non-linear hysteresis curves which is qualitatively similar to those of real viscoelastic materials. The motion is governed by three-dimensional non-linear dynamical system of equations. The harmonic balance method is applied to get analytic solutions of the system. The frequency-response curves show that multiple solutions co-exist and that the jump phenomena can occur. In addition, it is shown that separate solution branch exists and that it can merge with the primary response curve. Saddle-node bifurcation sets explain the occurences of such non-linear phenomena. A direct time integration of the original equation of motion validifies the use of the harmonic balance method to this sort of problem.

Surface Roughness Characteristics of Cemented Carbide Ground by Laminated Diamond Wheel (적층 다이아몬드 숫돌로 연삭된 초경합금의 표면거칠기 특성)

  • It was already proven experimentally that the laminated grinding wheel is superior to the general grinding wheel in the productivity of grinding. However, it can't be guaranteed when the workpiece material is cemented carbide. Because of its extreme hardness, the grinding wheels made up of super-abrasives are used for grinding it. So, to investigate the performance in extremely hard materials grinding using super-abrasive grinding wheels, the surface roughness characteristics of cemented carbide ground by the laminated diamond wheels are studied experimentally. Through this study, it is found that the similar surface roughness characteristics, those were found in the studies on the laminated aluminum oxide wheels, are still available.

  • High strength steels are widely used as tribo-materials in the field. Previous study revealed that for mild steel, the states of strain on the worn surface measured by X-ray diffraction has a good relationship with the state of wear. The objective of this study is to identify the relationship between the state of strain on the worn surface and the state of wear in high strength steels. Sliding wear tests were carried out using several hardened steels. X-ray diffraction tests were conducted to analyze the state of strain on the worn surface during wear. The experimental results indicated that the state of strain on worn surface in the hardened steel shows the same tendency as in the mild steel. It is clear that change of half value width on the worn surface as a function of sliding speeds is broadly similar in shape to wear characteristics curve and its magnitude has a good relationship with the wear rate at two different wear modes in the hardened steel.

Electroforming and Properties of Fe-Ni Alloy Thin Foils (Fe-Ni 합금 극박재 제조를 위한 전주성형기술 및 극박재 특성)

  • Electroforming is a process that employs technology similar to that used for electroplating but which is used for manufacturing metallic articles, rather than as a means of producing surface coatings. Electroforming provides a cost-effective means of producing alloys and fully dense nanocrystalline metals as foils, sheets and complex shapes. Fe-Ni nanocrystalline alloy foils with composition in the $36\~80wt\%$ Ni range were fabricated by electroforming. The thickness of electroformed foils was in the range of $5\~30{\mu}m$. TEM and XRD analysis was applied for measuring the grain size. Very fine grain size$(\~10nm)$ was obtained in alloy foils. The yield and tensile strength of electroformed Fe-Ni alloy were 2000-2800 MPa and 2500-3300 MPa respectively. The magnetic permeability at high frequency of electroformed Fe-Ni foil was higher than that of thicker foils.
