  • To save cost and time in Kimchi manufacture, the use of raw red-pepper paste and device-mashed vice materials, in place of dried red-pepper powder, was examined. Two kinds of Kimchi were prepared: One with dried red pepper powder and device-not mashed vice materials and the other with raw red pepper paste and device-mashed vice materials. Then pH, total acidity, total viable cell counts, total lactic acid bacteria and sensory characteristics were evaluated. Comparisons of the two Kimchis, indicated that changes in pH, total acidity, the total number of viable cells and total lactic acid bacteria were similar between the two groups. The acceptability score of the Kimchi made using the raw red pepper paste and device-mashed vice materials was slightly lower than that of Kimchi made using the dried red-pepper powder. This color was indistinctly changed since the vice materials were mashed and mixed. In conclusion, the results indicate that when manufacturing Kimchi using device-mashed vice materials, Kimchi of better quality can be made by adding dried red-pepper powder.

  • Two different casting speeds of 60 and 80mm/min are adopted to determine the effect of casting speed on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Al-Mg-Si/Al hybrid material prepared by duo-casting. The obtained hybrid material has a uniform and straight macro-interface between the pure Al side and the Al-Mg-Si alloy side at both casting speeds. When the casting speed is increased to 80mm/min, the size of primary α phases in Al-Mg-Si alloy decreases, without change of shape. Although the Al-Mg-Si alloy produced at higher casting speed of 80mm/min shows much higher ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and 0.2 % proof stress and lower elongation, along with higher bending strength compared to the case of the 60mm/min in casting speed, the tensile properties and bending strength of the hybrid material, which are similar to those of pure Al, are the same regardless of the increase of casting speed. Despite the different casting speeds, deformation and fracturing in hybrid materials are observed only on the pure Al side. This indicates that the macro-interface is well-bonded, allowing it to endure tensile and bending deformation in all hybrid materials.

  • Ferroelectric SrBi2Ta2O9 (SBT) thin films of Pt/Ti/SiO2 electrode were fabricated using a sintered SBT target with various Bi2O3 content by rf magnetron sputtering. Good hysteresis loop characteristics were observed in the SBT thin films deposited with 50mol% excess Bi target. SBT thin films crystallized from 650℃ however, good hysteresis loop can be obtained in the film annealed above 700℃. pt/TiO2/SiO2 and Pt/SiO2 electrodes were also used to investigate the Pt electrode dependence of SBT thin films. SBT thin films showed random oriented polycrystalline structure and similar morphology regardless of electrodes with quite different surface morphology. A 0.2㎛ thick SBT film annealed at 750℃ exhibited the remanent polarization (2Pr) of μC/㎠ and coercive voltage(Vc) of 1V at an applied voltage of 5V.

  • Vapor grown carbon fibers (VGCF) were treated with atmospheric plasma enhancing the surface area in order to improve the bonding to the matrix in epoxy composites. The changes in the mechanical properties of VGCF/epoxy nanocompostes, such as tensile modulus and tensile strength were investigated in this study. VGCF with and without atmospheric plasma treatment for surface modification were used in this investigation. The interdependence of these properties on the VGCF contents and interfacial bonding between VGCF/epoxy matrix were discussed. The mechanical properties of atmospheric plasma treated (APT) VGCF/epoxy were compared with raw VGCF/epoxy. The tensile strength of APT VGCF/epoxy nanocomposites showed higher value than that of raw VGCF. The tensile strength was increased with atmospheric plasma treatment, due to better adhesion at VGCF/epoxy interface. The tensile modulus of raw VGCF and APT VGCF/epoxy matrix were of the similar value. The dispersion of the VGCF was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), SEM micrographs showed an excellent dispersion of VGCF in epoxy matrix by ultrasonic method.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to observe the change in the viscoelastic properties of thermoplasticized injectable root canal filling materials as a function of temperature and to compare the handling characteristics of these materials. Materials and Methods: Three commercial gutta perchas and Resilon (Pentron Clinical Technologies) in a pellet form were heated in the Obtura-II system (Obtura Spartan) at $140^{\circ}C$ and $200^{\circ}C$, and the extrusion temperature of the thermoplasticized materials was measured. The viscoelastic properties of the materials as a function of temperature were evaluated using a rheometer. The elastic modulus G', viscous modulus G", loss tangent tan${\delta}$, and complex viscosity ${\eta}^*$ were determined. The phase transition temperature was determined by both the rheometer and a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). The consistency of the materials was compared under compacting pressure at $60^{\circ}C$ and $40^{\circ}C$ by a squeeze test. Results: The three gutta perchas had dissimilar profiles in viscoelastic properties with varying temperature. The phase transition of softened materials into solidification occurred at $40^{\circ}C$ to $50^{\circ}C$, and the onset temperatures obtained by a rheometer and a DSC were similar to each other. The onset temperature of phase transition and the consistency upon compaction pressure were different among the materials (p < 0.05). Resilon had a rheologically similar pattern to the gutta perchas, and was featured between high and low-flow gutta perchas. Conclusions: The rheological characteristics of the thermoplasticized root canal filling materials changed under a cooling process. The dissimilar viscoelastic properties among the materials require different handling characteristics during an injecting and compacting procedure.

  • PURPOSE. To characterize the microstructure of three yttria partially stabilized zirconia ceramics and to compare their hardness, indentation fracture resistance (IFR), biaxial flexural strength (BFS), and fatigue flexural strength. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Disc-shaped specimens were obtained from 3Y-TZP (Vita YZ HT), 4Y-PSZ (Vita YZ ST) and 5Y-PSZ (Vita YZ XT), following the ISO 6872/2015 guidelines for BFS testing (final dimensions of 12 mm in diameter, 0.7 and 1.2 ± 0.1 mm in thicknesses). Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses were performed, and mechanical properties were assessed by Vickers hardness, IFR, quasi-static BFS and fatigue tests. RESULTS. All ceramics showed similar chemical compositions, but mainly differed in the amount of yttria, which was higher as the amount of cubic phase in the diffractogram (5Y-PSZ > 4Y-PSZ > 3Y-TZP). The 4Y- and 5Y-PSZ specimens showed surface defects under SEM, while 3Y-TZP exhibited greater grain uniformity on the surface. 5Y-PSZ and 3Y-TZP presented the highest hardness values, while 3Y-TZP was higher than 4Y- and 5Y-PSZ with regard to the IFR. The 5Y-PSZ specimen (0.7 and 1.2 mm) showed the worst mechanical performance (fatigue BFS and cycles until failure), while 3Y-TZP and 4Y-PSZ presented statistically similar values, higher than 5Y-PSZ for both thicknesses (0.7 and 1.2 mm). Moreover, 3Y-TZP showed the highest (1.2 mm group) and the lowest (0.7 mm group) degradation percentage, and 5Y-PSZ had higher strength degradation than 4Y-PSZ group. CONCLUSION. Despite the microstructural differences, 4Y-PSZ and 3Y-TZP had similar fatigue behavior regardless of thickness. 5Y-PSZ had the lowest mechanical performance.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the marginal sealing ability of Hipol composite resin. Using freshly extracted human teeth and 2% acquous methylene blue, the marginal leakage of dye in restorative materials such as Hi-pol, Adaptic, Nuvasystem, Epolite and Amalgam was investigated at 37℃ and under temperature cycling between 4℃ and 60℃. The results were as follows; 1. All the filling materials revealed the penetration of dye between cavity walls and restorations. 2. Hi-pol and Adaptic showed more marginal leakage than other materials and the degree of dye penetration in Hi-pol was similar to that of Adaptic. 3. Nuva system showed the least marginal leakage at 37℃ and under temperature cycling between 4℃ and 60℃. 4. Under temperature cycling, all materials showed a slight increase in marginal leakage except Epolite, which showed the greastest change in leakage.

  • Charge dynamics in polymeric materials after aged under ac electric field using the pulsed electroacoustic (PEA) technique is reported. The emphasis is placed on charge decay. The charge dynamics of the ac aged additive free low density polyethylene (LDPE) samples under dc bias differ from the sample without ac ageing, indicating changes brought in by ac ageing. It is believed that a slow decay rate of charge in the ac aged sample is related to the formation of deep traps in the material. However, chemical analysis by infrared spectroscope (FTIR) and Raman microscope reveals no significant chemical changes taken place in the bulk of the material after ac ageing. Further experiments on irradiated LDPE have revealed a similar behaviour, i.e. the charge decay is slower in irradiated samples than that of fresh sample. The findings presented clearly indicate that space charge measurement can be used as a diagnostic tool to monitor ageing in polymeric materials.

  • Ru thin films were deposited on bi-axially textured Ni tape using rf-magnetron sputtering for a conductive buffer layer of high Tc superconductor applications. (002) textured Ni films were fabricated as the deposition temperature was over $600^{\circ}C$. Rocking curves of the films showed similar alignment to those the Ni tapes. The resistivity of the tapes fabricated below $600^{\circ}C$ was around 20$\mu\Omega$-cm which is good for the conductive layer for tape superconductor applications.
