In recent years, there has been a remarkable progress in the development of the fiber optic sensors for the detection of various chemicals. Fiber optic sensors have the advantages of very small size, flexibility and low cost. The fiber optic sensors employing different optical or spectroscopic phenomena have been reported such as bulk absorption, optical reflectance, fluoresces and energy transfer. In this study, the effect of nanoparticle concentration in liquid upon light absorption and scattering was studied using extrinsic fiber optic method. For the evaluation, we used Red (650 nm) and Blue (430 nm) light sources which are coupled through the standard cuvette using optical fiber to detector. The experiments are carried out with Polystyrene latex (400 - 800 nm), and Silicon (35 - 110 nm) nanoparticles suspended in Isopropanol. Differences in light absorption and scattering depending on nanoparticle concentration and type are discussed. This method may be useful to study nanoparticles properties for various application and research.

Si-carbon composites as anode materials for lithium rechargeable batteries were prepared simply by mixing Si nanoparticles with carbon black and/or graphite through a solution process. Si nanoparticles were well dispersed and deposited on the surface of the carbon in a tetrahydrofuran solution. Si-carbon composites showed more than 700 mAh/g of initial capacity under less than 20% loading of Si nanoparticle in the composites. While the electrode with only Si nanoparticles showed fast capacity fading during continuous cycling, Si-carbon composite electrodes showed higher capacities. The cycle performances of Si nanoparticles in composites containing graphite were improved due to the role of the graphite as a matrix.
Single-crystalline silicon nanowire arrays (SiNWAs) using electroless metal-assisted etchings of p-type silicon were successfully fabricated. Ag nanoparticle deposition on silicon wafers in HF solution acted as a localized micro-electrochemical redox reaction process in which both anodic and cathodic process took place simultaneously at the silicon surface to give SiNWAs. The growth effect of SiNWs was investigated by changing of etching times. The morphologies of SiNWAs were obtained by SEM observation. Well-aligned nanowire arrays perpendicular to the surface of the silicon substrate were produced. Optical characteristics of SiNWs were measured by FT-IR spectroscopy and indicated that the surface of SiNWs are terminated with hydrogen. The thicknesses and lengths of SiNWs are typically 150-250 nm and 2 to 5 microns, respectively.
Silicon nanoparticles can be synthesized in a standard radio-frequency glow discharge system at low temperature (${\sim}200^{\circ}C$). Plasma synthesis of silicon nanoparticles, initially a side effect of powder formation, has become over the years an exciting field of research which has opened the way to new opportunities in the field of materials deposition and their application to optoelectronic devices. Hydrogenated polymorphous silicon (pm-Si:H) has a peculiar microstructure, namely a small volume fraction of plasma synthesized silicon nanoparticles embedded in an amorphous matrix, which originates from the unique deposition mechanism. Detailed discussion on plasma synthesis of silicon nanoparticles, growth mechanism and photovoltaic application of pm-Si:H will be presented.
This study investigates the fabrication of core-sheath nanocomposite fibers by locating germanium (Ge) and silicon dioxide ($SiO_2$) nanoparticles selectively in the sheath layer by co-axial electrospinning. Co-axially spun fibers were prepared by electrospinning a pure PVA solution and Ge/$SiO_2$/PVA solution as the core and sheath layer, respectively. Core-sheath nanocomposite fibers were electrospun under a variety of conditions that include various feed rates for the core and sheath solutions, voltages, and concentric needle diameters, in order to find an optimum spinning condition. Ge/$SiO_2$ nanocomposite fibers were also prepared by uniaxial electrospinning to compare fiber morphology and nanoparticle distribution with core-sheath nanofibers. Using scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and energy dispersive X-ray analysis, it was demonstrated that the co-axial approach resulted in the presence of nanoparticles near the surface region of the fibers compared to the overall distribution obtained for uni-axial fibers. The co-axially electrospun Ge/$SiO_2$/PVA nanofiber webs have possible uses in high efficiency functional textiles in which the nanoparticles located in the sheath region provide enhanced functionality.
Nanofluid is a kind of new engineering material consisting of nanoparticles dispersed in base fluid. Nanofluids could have various applications such as magnetic fluids, heat exchanger working fluids, lubricants, drug delivery and so on in present study, various nanoparticles, such as MWCNT (Multi-walled Carbon Nanotube), fullerene, copper oxide, and silicon dioxide are used to produce nanofluids. As base fluids, DI-water, ethylene glycol, oil, and silicon oil are used. To investigate the thermo-physical properties of nanofluids, thermal conductivity and kinematic viscosity are measured. Stability estimation of nanofluid is conducted with UV-vis spectrophoto-meter. In this study, the high pressure homogenizer is the most effective method to produce nanofluid with the prepared nanoparticle and base fluid. Excellently stable nanofluids are produced with the magnetron sputtering system. Thermal conductivity of nanofluid increases with increasing particle volume fraction except water-based fullerene nanofluid which has lower thermal conductivity than base fluid due to its lower thermal conductivity, 0.4 W/mK. The experimental results can't be predicted by Jang and Choi model.
To enhance the performance of photovoltaic a-Si:H solar cells with a hybrid-type light absorbing structure of single crystal silicon nanoparticles (Si NPs) in a-Si:H matrix, single crystal Si NPs were produced by laser pyrolysis. The Si NPs were synthesized by $SiH_4$ gas decomposition using a $CO_2$ laser. The properties of Si NPs were controlled by process parameters such as $CO_2$ laser power, reactive gas pressure, and $H_2/SiH_4$ gas flows. The crystalline properties and sizes of Si NPs were analyzed by High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HRTEM). The sizes of Si NPs were controllable in the range of 5-15 nm in diameter and the effects of process parameters of laser pyrolysis were systematically investigated.
AThe effect of localized surface plasmon on silicon substrates was studied using silver nanoparticles. The nanoparticles were formed by self-arrangement through the surface energy using rapid thermal annealing (RTA) technique after the thin nanolayer of silver was deposited by thermal evaporation. By the theoretical calculation based on Mie scattering and dielectric function of air, indium tin oxide (ITO), and silver, the strong peak of scattering cross section of silver nanoparticles was found at 358 nm for air, and 460 nm for ITO, respectively. Accordingly, the strong suppression of reflectance under the condition of induced light of $30^{\circ}$ occurred at the specific wavelength which is almost in accordance with peak of scattering cross section. When the external quantum efficiency was measured using silicon solar cells with silver nanoparticles, there was small enhancement peak near the 460 nm wavelength in which the light was resonated between silver nanoparticles and ITO.
