  • Fine silica powders were synthesized via w/o emulsion method using sodium silicate, ammonium sulfate, Triton N-57, and cyclohexane as silica source, precipitating agent, surfactant, and oil phase, respectively. The powders were prepared under a conventional process and an ultrasonic process using the same reactants at room temperature for 1 hr varying the concentration of $Na_2SiO_3$ solution and the mol ratio of $H_2O$/surfactant, respectively. The particle size of the silica powder was reduced with decreasing the concentration of sodium silicate solution and with increasing the mol ratio of $H_2O$/surfactant under with and without ultrasounds. The size of powder with ultrasounds was smaller than that without ultrasounds, which indicates that the application of ultrasound in the synthesis of silica powder is an efficient way to reduce particle size.

  • Long-term aluminum (Al) corrosion tests were designed to investigate the condition that would generate severe Al corrosion and precipitation. Buffer agents of sodium tetraborate (NaTB), trisodium phosphate (TSP) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) were adopted. The insulation materials, fiberglass and calcium silicate (Ca-sil), were examined to explore their effects on Al corrosion. The results show that significant precipitates were formed in both NaTB/TSP-buffered solutions at high pH. The precipitates formed in NaTB solution raise more concerns on chemical effects in GSI-191. A passivation layer formed on the surfaces of coupon in solution with the presence of insulations could effectively mitigate Al corrosion. The Fe-enriched intermetallic particles (IPs) embedded in coupon appeared to serve as seeds to readily induce precipitation via providing extra area for heterogeneous Al hydroxide precipitation. X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses indicate that the precipitates are mainly boehmite (γ-AlOOH) and no direct evidence confirms the presence of sodium aluminum silicate or calcium phosphate.

  • The purpose of this research was to synthesize fluorine modified waterborne polyurethane dispersion (F-WPU) by soap-free (internal emulsifier) emulsion polymerization techniques, to prepare coating solution based on fluorine modified waterborne polyurethane dispersion (F-WPU) and to compare the chemical and thermo-mechanical properties on the electrogalvanized steel sheet. Environmentally friendly F-WPU was prepared with a fluorinated polyol containing 60 wt% of fluorine. There are various ways of combining a wide variety of fluorinated polyols and diisocyanate to exhibit novel properties of waterborne polyurethane dispersion. Components of coating solution were largely divided into 4 kinds i.e., F-WPU, acrylic emulsion, silane coupling agent, and colloidal silicate. F-WPU coating solution on the electro-galvanized steel sheet showed excellent properties of corrosion resistance, alkali resistance and heat resistance, as compared to other coating solutions using a general waterborne resin. The F-WPU coating solution's reliable effects are possibly due to the fluorine atoms incorporated even in a small amount of F-WPU.

  • In order to synthesize monodispersed spherical silica fine particles, we investigated the reaction of hydrolysis of 0.05∼4.0 mole Si(OC2H5)4-0.01∼7.60mole NH3 -0.24∼38.40 mole H2O-2.62∼16.88mole C2H5OH systems. The range of the composition of solution which spherical silica particles were formed was enlarged according to an increase in concentration of Si(OC2H5)4. Larger particles were obtained at higher molar ratios of Si(OC2H5)4/C2H5OH, NH3/H2O and H2O/Si(OC2H5)4 and at a lower reaction temperature.

  • The synthetic conditions of $ ZrSiO_4-Cd(S_xS_{1-x})$ stains from CdS, Se, $SiO_2$ , 4ZrO_2$ and Lif were investigated and the colors were examined. Colors of the stains prepared were yellow orange red pink ruby and violet in relation to both the content of CdS-Se in $ZrSiO_4$ and firing temperature. Colors of these series stains were thermally stabilized probably by the structural stability of zirconium silicate. Furthermore by the result of X-ray diffraction analysis it is assumed that color of the zircon cadmium sulphoselenide $ ZrSiO_4-Cd(S_xS_{1-x})$ stain is developed by neither the coloring ions in $ZrSiO_4$ lattice nor the solid solution of $ZrSiO_4$ and $Cd(S_xS_{1-x})$ but by the small crystals of $Cd(S_xS_{1-x})$ being occluded by the zirconium silicate during sintering process.

  • This paper presents an experimental study of the sulfate resistance of mortars and pastes exposed to sodium sulfate solutions up to one year. In order to check deterioration modes due to sulfate attack, the sodium sulfate solution was varied at three concentration steps (3,380, 10,140 and 33,800 ppm of $SO_4^{2-}$ ions), and maintained at ambient temperature. The tests include a visual examination, expansion and compressive strength loss measurements as well as x-ray diffraction tests. The experimental data indicated that the use of cement with a low $C_3A$ content and low silicate ratio has a beneficial effect on the sulfate attack of mortars. In contrast, the mortars with a high $C_3A$ content and high silicate ratio became severely degraded due to the formation of ettringite, gypsum and/or thaumasite in the cement matrix.

  • The purpose of this study was to measure penetration of dye stuff(5% Methylene blue, Hematoxylin, Crystal violet and Safranin-O) on silicate cement, Adaptic, Hi-pol and unfilled resin. Each filling material was mixed on the mixing pad and the mixed material was inserted with condensation force of 500gr, 1000gr and 2000gr and without condensation force into preformed glass tube (10mm in diameter and 10mm in height). The specimen was stored in the air for 24 hours, then specimen was immersed in various dye solution (5% methylene blue, hematoxin, crystal violet and safranin-O) for different period of time (l hour and 24 hours). These dye-treated specimen was cut horizontally at the middle portion and the dye penetration in cut surface was measured. Following results were obtained. 1. Pentration of various dye was excessive in silicate cement with and without Condensation force. 2. There has been no evidence of dye penetration in unfilled resin. 3. Dye penetration occurced with in 1 hour period and the extending time didn't affect the dye penetration.

  • Selenium is one of the interesting elements in human body, because it's important micro-nutrient for human health as the essential biological tissue in protein. Selenite ($SeO_3^{2-}$) and selenate ($SeO_4^{2-}$) are the dominant dissolved selenium species in natural water, and their toxicity and chemical properties are very different each other. Thus it is necessary to separate the two selenium species for understanding selenium behaviors in natural waters. Some reported methods, using an alumina-filled column and an ion chromatography, to separate the selenite and selenite may be difficult to directly apply to the natural water. Therefore magnetite selectively adsorbs selenite and selenate according to pH of solution, the separation of selenite and selenate using a magnetite-filled column was successfully obtained at weak alkali solutions. Moreover, the influence of dissolved anions in natural water at the selenite sorption onto magnetite was also investigated because they could hinder the sorption of selenite onto magnetite. In other to directly apply to the natural water, reactive sites of magnetite should be considered because dissolved silicate in natural water can hinder the adsorption of selenite onto magnetite.

  • Objective of this study was to determine the Si distribution and extent of control of powdery mildew diseases of cucumber(Cucumis sativus L.). The distribution of silicon in the leaf epidermis of cucumber plants grown in hydroponic nutrient solutions supplemented with soluble silicates was examined using scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray analysis. The silicate absorbed from nutrient solution was translocated into cucumber leaves, and accumulated mainly in the cells surrounding the base of trichome hairs. Base cells surrounding the trichomes also had high levels of Si, Ca, and K. Si levels in the epidermal cells for low Si treatment were not detectable except in the trichome bases. Hyphal lengths of powdery mildew occurring on cucumber leaves cultivated in medium with high concentration of silicate were remarkably shorter than those of cucumber leaves cultivated with low concentration of silicate. There was a negative correlation between hyphal length of S. fuliginea and silicate concentrations.

  • Poly(lactic acid) is a linear aliphatic thermoplastic polyester, produced by the ring-opening polymerization of lactides and the lactic acid monomers, which are obtained from the fermentation of sugar feed stocks, corn, etc. PLA has high mechanical, thermal plasticity, fabric-ability, and biocompatibility, So PLA is a promising polymer far various end-use applications. In recent time, the intercalation of polymers from either solution or the melt in the silicate galleries of clay is the best technique to prepare nanocompoiste material which often exhibit remarkable improvement of mechanical, thermal, optical and physicochemical properties when compared with the pure polymer or conventional composites. Layered silicate is naturally abundant, economic, and more importantly benign to the environment.
