We report the effect of surface morphology on the conductivity of the poly-N-vinylcarbazole (PVK)/silica gel ($SiO_2$) nanocomposites as a function of $SiO_2$ weight percentage (%).The polymerization of PVK was initiated by a free-radical polymerization. The surface morphology of the prepared composite shows the incorporation of $SiO_2$ in the prepared PVK-$SiO_2$ (PS) nanocomposites. The conductivity increased from $9.2{\times}10^{-5}S\;cm^{-1}$ to $9.6{\times}10^{-4}S\;cm^{-1}$ with the increase in the percentage of silica gel from 5 to 30%. The nanocomposites show a percolation behavior having a threshold value between 15 and 20%.
The transport mechanisms of the MTES (methyltriethoxysilane) templating silica/a-alumina composite membrane were evaluated by using four binary and one quaternary hydrogen mixtures through permeation experiments at unsteady- and steady-states. Since the permeation flux in the MTES membrane, through the experimental and theoretical studies, was affected by molecular sieving effects as well as surface diffusion properties, the kinetic and equilibrium separation should be considered simultaneously according to molecular properties. In order to depict the transient multi-component permeation on the templating silica membrane, the GMS (generalized Maxwell-Stefan) and DGM (dust gas model) were adapted to unsteady-state material balance.

The characteristics of abrasive wear of the rubber matrix composites filled with nano sized silica particles were investigated at ambient temperature by pin-on-disc friction test. The range of volume fraction of silica particles tested are between 11% to 25%. The cumulative wear volume and friction coefficient of these materials on particle volume fraction were determined experimentally. The major failure mechanisms were lapping layers, deformation of matrix, ploughing, deboding of particles and microcracking by scanning electric microscopy photograph of the tested surface. The cumulative wear volume showed a tendency to increase nonlinear with increase of sliding distance. As increasing the silica particles of these composites indicated higher friction coefficient.
The project focuses on the dynamic analysis of concrete beams reinforced with silica-nanoparticles under blast loading. The structure is located at two boundary conditions. The equivalent composite properties are determined using Mori-Tanak model. The structure is simulated with sinusoidal shear deformation theory. Employing nonlinear strains-displacements, stress-strain, the energy equations of beam were obtained and using Hamilton's principal, the governing equations were derived. Using differential quadrature methods (DQM) and Newmark method, the dynamic deflection of the structure is obtained. The influences of volume percent and agglomeration of silica nanoparticles, geometrical parameters of beam, boundary condition and blast load on the dynamic deflection were investigated. Results showed that with increasing volume percent of silica nanoparticles, the dynamic deflection decreases.

Inorganic-organic hybrid material such as vinyl-nano sized silica ball was synthesized by acrylo-alkoxysilane and nano silica ball with different particle size. And then they were formulated into acrylic-melamine clearcoat. This material is fully characterized with various analytical methods and applied for strength measurement. The glossy effect, matting effect and anti-scratching properties of materials were investigated for further growth and maintenance. When the particle size of nano silica ball is 20~30 nm, the glossy retain effect was increased by 7% compared to bare acrylic-melamine clearcoat. When a commercially available silica Aerosil 200 (Hydrophilic fumed silica, average particle size 12 nm, Degussa) react with vinyl alkoxysilane vinyl-fumed silica complex form. The vinyl-fumed silica along with clearcoat increases only 2% increase at glossy retain. Nano-scratch test results also support the glossy retain effect of vinyl nano-sized silica ball in clearcoat.

Silica membranes were prepared on a porous metal sheet by ultrasonic spray pyrolysis method for gas separation at high temperatures. In order to improve the permselectivity, silica was deposited in the sol-gel derived $silica/\gamma-alumina$ intermediate layer by pyrolysis of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) at 873 K. The pyrolysis with forced cross flow through the porous wall of the support was very effective in plugging mesopores, Knudsen diffusion regime, that were left unplugged in the membranes. At permeation temperature of 523 K, the silica/alumina composite membrane showed $H_2/N_2$ and water/methanol selectivity as high as 17 and 16, respectively, by molecular sieve effect.
A suspension copolymerization of styrene and butyl methacrylate (BMA) in the aqueous phase was conducted at a selected temperature between 65 and $95^{\circ}C$. Hydrophobic silica was selected as a stabilizer and azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as an initiator. Optimum dispersion of silica in water was obtained at pH 10 while polymerization reaction was run at pH 7. TGA and EDS measurements revealed that 90% of silica functioned as a stabilizer and 10% were incorporated into polymeric particles. Average particle diameter decreased with increasing amounts of stabilizer. Molecular weights displayed an increase when the stabilizer concentration reached 1.67 wt%. An increase in the initiator concentration and/or reaction temperature raised the reaction rate but decreased molecular weights. Particle diameter was nearly independent of the initiator concentration and reaction temperature. An increase in the BMA proportion decreased the glass transition temperature and increased the particle diameter with irregularity in shape. Incorporation of carbon black into the particles composed of styrene and BMA prolonged the reaction time before reaching completion. We have confirmed that a suspension copolymerization of styrene and BMA with hydrophobic silica as a stabilizer can produce spherical composite particles with $1-30{\mu}m$ in diameter containing carbon black.

In order to develop new insulating materials for GIS Spacer using environmentally friendly insulating gas, three kinds of dispersed liquid nano composites of solid epoxy /nano layered silicate filled material were prepared. And the epoxy/nano/micro silica composite was prepared by mixing epoxy/nano 3 phr dispersion/4 kinds of filler contents(40,50,60, 70wt%). The electrical insulation breakdown strengths of the nano and nano/micro mixed composites were evaluated by using 8 kinds of samples including the original epoxy. The mechanical tensile strength of the epoxy / nano / micro silica composite were evaluated, also. The TEM was measured to evaluate the internal structure of nano/micro composites. As a result, it was confirmed that the layered silicate nano particles was exfoliated through the process of inserting epoxy resin between silicate layers and the layers. In addition, dispersion of nano / micro silica resulted in improvement of electrical insulation breakdown strength with increase of filling amount of dense tissue with nanoparticles inserted between microparticles. In addition, the tensile strength showed a similar tendency, and as the content of microsilica filler increased, the mechanical improvement was further increased.
Chitosan-polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) -bamboo charcoal/silica (CS-PVA-BC/SI) hybrid fillers with compatibilized styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) composites were fabricated by the interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) method. The structure and composition of the composite samples were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The viscoelastic behaviors of the rubber composites and their vulcanizates were explored using a rubber processing analyzer (RPA) in the rheometer, strain sweep and temperature sweep modes. The storage and loss moduli of SBR increased significantly with the incorporation of different hybrid fillers, which was attributed to the formation of an interphase between the hybrid fillers and rubber matrix, and the effective dispersion of the hybrid fillers. The mechanical properties (hardness, tensile strength, oxygen transmission rate, and swelling rate) of the composite samples were characterized in detail. From the results of the mechanical test, it was found that BC-CS-PVA0SBR had the best mechanical properties. Therefore, the BC-CS-PVA hybrid filler provided the best reinforcement effects for the SBR latex in this research.

The present study is undertaken to evaluate the effect of volume fraction on the results of Charpy impact test for the rubber matrix filled with nano sized silica particles composites. The Charpy impact tests are conducted in the temperature range $0^{\circ}C$ and $-10^{\circ}C$. The range of volume fraction of silica particles tested are between 11% to 25%. The critical energy release rate $G_{IC}$ of the rubber matrix composites filled with nano sized silica particles is affected by silica volume fraction and it is shown that the value of $G_{IC}$ decreases as volume fraction increases. In regions close to the initial crack tip, fracture processes such as matrix deformation, silica particle debonding and delamination, and/or pull out between particles and matrix which is ascertained by SEM photographs of Charpy impact fracture surfaces.
