The effect of fumed silica loading on the thermal stability and mechanical properties of fluorosilicone (FVMQ) rubber was investigated. The distribution of fumed silica inside FVMQ was characterized using scanning electron microscopy, and the thermal stability of composites was evaluated using thermogravimetric analysis and by the changes in mechanical performance during thermo-oxidative aging. The function mechanism of fumed silica was studied by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The results show that with increasing silica content, the crosslink density of composites, the modulus at 100%, and tensile strength also increased, whereas the elongation at break decreased. Furthermore, increasing the silica content of composites increased the initial decomposition temperature (Td) and residual weight of the composite after exposure to nitrogen. In addition, the thermal oxidative aging experiment demonstrated improved aging resistance of the FVMQ composites, including lower change in tensile strength, elongation at break, and modulus at 100%.
The effect of surface treatments with the atmospheric pressure flame plasma (APFP) and epoxy silane (ES) is experimentally investigated to yield the best mechanical properties of silica ($V_f=40%$) reinforced elastomeric composites. The tensile strength of the composites is increased significantly with decrease the mean diameter. When the diameter is $2.2{\mu}m$, that of the composite is increased about 1.4 times compared to the matrix (2.52 MPa). Also, the tensile strength of silica reinforced composites with APFP and ES treated is increased 8.8~13.3%, 9.9~12.5%, respectively. When the diameter is $26.6{\mu}m$, the tensile modulus of the composite is increased about 2 times compared to the matrix (0.88MPa), and the tensile modulus of silica reinforced composites with APFP and ES treated is increased 15.6~22.8%, 21.1~5.8%, respectively. Conventional silane coupling agent treatment have a few disadvantages because of using organic solvents. However APFP treatment is a fast, economic and eco-friendly method to improve the mechanical properties.
In the present article, silica nanoparticles (SNPs) were exploited to improve the tribological and mechanical properties of vinyl ester/glass fiber composites. To the best of our knowledge, there hasn't been any prior study on the wear properties of glass fiber reinforced vinyl ester SiO2 nanocomposites. The wear resistance is a critical concern in many industries which needs to be managed effectively to reduce high costs. To examine the influence of SNPs on the mechanical properties, seven different weight percentages of vinyl ester/nano-silica composites were initially fabricated. Afterward, based on the tensile testing results of the silica nanocomposites, four wt% of SNPs were selected to fabricate a ternary composite composed of vinyl ester/glass fiber/nano-silica using vacuum-assisted resin transfer molding. At the next stage, the tensile, three-point flexural, Charpy impact, and pin-on-disk wear tests were performed on the ternary composites. The fractured surfaces were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images after conducting previous tests. The most important and interesting result of this study was the development of a nanocomposite that exhibited a 52.2% decrease in the mean coefficient of friction (COF) by augmenting the SNPs, which is beneficial for the fabrication/repair of composite/steel energy pipelines as well as hydraulic and pneumatic pipe systems conveying abrasive materials. Moreover, the weight loss due to wearing the ternary composite containing one wt% of SNPs was significantly reduced by 70%. Such enhanced property of the fabricated nanocomposite may also be an important design factor for marine structures, bridges, and transportation of wind turbine blades.
The influence of combination of nano silica and silica fume, as partial cement replacement materials, on the properties of concrete has been studied through the measurement of compressive strength. The compressive strength of concrete in terms of mean, standard deviation and with-in-test coefficient of variation related to the variation in the nominated parameters have also been developed. The compressive strength data developed experimentally has been analyzed using normal-probability distribution and partial safety factors of composite concretes have been evaluated by using first order second moment approach with Hasofer Lind's method. The use of Nano silica and silica fume in concrete decreases the partial safety factor of concrete i.e., increase the reliability of concrete. The experimental results show that the properties of concrete having nano silica and silica fume in combination were better than that of a plain concrete. The SEM test results showing the level of Ca(OH)2 in plain concrete and consumption level Ca(OH)2 of concrete containing nano silica & silica fume have also been presented.
Porous-composite electrodes have been developed using silica gel, which reduce carbon aerogel usage with high cost. Silica gel powder was added to the carbon aerogel to simplify the manufacturing procedure and to increase the wet-ability, the mechanical strength and the CDI efficiency. Porous composite electrodes composed of carbon aerogel and silica gel powder were prepared by paste rolling method. Carbon aerosol composite electrodes with $10\times10cm^2$ are placed face to face between spacers, and assembled the four-stage series cells for CDI process. Each stage is composed of 45 cells. Four-stage series cells (flow through cells) for CDI process are put in continuous-system reactor containing 1,000ml-NaCl solution bath of 1,000 ppm. The four-stage series cells with carbon aerogel electrodes are charged at 1.2V and are discharged at 0.001V, and then read the current. Conclusively, removal efficiencies of ions using the four-stage series cells composed of carbon aerogel composite electrodes show good removal efficiency of $99\%$ respectively.
In this study, to improve the ballistic efficiency of very brilliant alumina-silica armor material, forming press and sintering temperature were changed. After physical/mechanical measurement, we measured ballistic properties about KE(Kinetic Energy, L/D=10.7, tungsten heavy alloy) and HEAT(High Explosive Anti-Tank, K215) projectiles and analyzed them. As a result, in $1235^{\circ}C$, it appeared the highest ballistic efficiency about HEAT and it improved $22\%$ ballistic efficiency, better than invented alumina-silica armor material before.

In this study, 20 types of samples were prepared by mixing different kinds of inorganic materials to develop insulation materials for epoxy - based GIS substation equipment used under high voltage environmentally friendly insulation gas. One of the electrical characteristics, AC insulation breakdown experiment was performed. As mixing ratio of mixed heterogeneous inorganic materials, the dielectric breakdown strength was increased with increasing filler ratio of micro silica, micro silica : micro Alumina, 1:9, 3:7, 5:5, 7:3, 9:1, and decreased as the filling amount of micro alumina increased. The AC insulation breakdown characteristics were the best when the composition ratio was 9:1. The higher the content of silica, the better the interfacial properties, and the larger the alumina content ratio, the worse the interfacial properties.

From alumina powder and TEOS, $\alpha$-Al2O3/SiO2 composite powder for reaction-sintered mullite was synthesized by heterogeneous coagulation and surface coating, and investigated the mullitization reaction and sintering behavor of these powders. In $\alpha$-Al2O3/SiO2 composite powder prepared by heterogeneous coagulation, each alumina particles were surrounded by silica particles of 50~60 nm in size. And the alumina particles in composite powder prepared by surface coating were coated by uniform silica layer with thickness of 50 nm. In both methods, mullitization reaction was completed at 1$650^{\circ}C$ for 3h, and specimen sintered above 145$0^{\circ}C$ was about 95% fo the theoretical relative density. Mullite grains formed from the reaction with composite powders showed spherical shape with a size of 1~2${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$.

The thermal properties of carbon/phenolic and silica/phenolic ablative composites were investigated by measuring the heat capacity, thermal diffusivity and thermal conductivity. The heat capacities of carbon/ phenolic and silica/phenolic composites were calculated from differential scanning calorimeter curve. The thermal diffusivities of carbon/phenolic and silica/phenolic composites were measured by the laser flash method with varying laminated direction, i.e., with laminar direction and across laminar direction. The thermal diffusivities decreased with increasing temperature. The thermal conductivities of carbon/phenolic and silica/phenolic composites were calculated using the heat capacity, density and thermal diffusivity. The thermal conductivities increased with increasing temperature. The thermal conductivity of with laminar direction is two times higher than that of across-laminar direction in carbon/phenolic composite due to the directionality of thermal conductivity of carbon fiber. The thermal conductivities of two dimensional fiber reinforced composites were analyzed using the conductivities of constituents and volume fraction of each constituent. The thermal conductivities of carbon fiber and silica fiber were calculated from thermal conductivities of carbon/phenolic and silica/phenolic composites. The thermal conductivities of carbon/phenolic and silica/phenolic composites at RT were predicted from thermal conductivities of fiber and resin with varying the volume fraction of fiber.
