Part 1 provides a theoretical introduction of the hydrolysis mechanism, while Part 2 introduces other types of reaction mechanisms after hydrolysis in elastomer and PA66 composites. We reviewed the condensation reaction, which occurs after hydrolysis in bi-functional alkoxy silane (TESPD & TESPT), and investigated its effects on the mechanical properties of the composites. We also reviewed activators such as zinc soap, which enhances the mechanical properties of silica-silane-filled elastomer composites. The interaction parameter of silica-silane-filled elastomer composites [αC (alpha C)] were also discussed. The effects of hydrolysis on the mechanical property changes in plastic composites were compared and reviewed.
Surface modification of colloidal silica nanoparticles without disrupting the electric double layer of nanoparticles is a major challenge. In the work, silane was employed to modify colloidal silica nanoparticles without inducing bridge flocculation obviously. The effect of pH value of the silica sol, the amount of silane in feed, and reaction temperature on the graft amount and the final size of modified particles was investigated. The increased weight loss by TG and the appearance of $T_2$ and $T_3$ except for $Q_2$ and $Q_3$ signals by CP/MAS $^{29}Si$ NMR of the modified samples verified the successful grafting of silane. The graft amount reached 0.57 mmol/g, which was slightly lower than theory value, and the particle size remained nearly the same as unmodified particles for acidic silica sol at the optimum condition. For alkaline silica sol after modification, aggregates composed of several nanoparticles connected together with silane moleculars as the bridge appeared.
Colloidal Silica(CS)/silane sol solutions were prepared in variation with synthesizing parameters such as ratio of CS to silane and reaction time. In the case of LHSA CS/tetramethoxysilane(TMOS)/methyltrimethoxysilane(MTMS) CS/silane sol, coating film had stable contact angle with increasing reaction time excepting for 48hours. Also, the LHSA CS/TMOS/MTMS coating film had more enhanced flat surface with increasing the amount of MTMS and increasing reaction time. In the case of thermal stability, thermal dissociation of LHSA CS/MTMS sol did not occur up to $550^{\circ}C$.

The optimum mixing conditions of silica and silane containing rubber composites were evaluated by investigating the properties of rubber composites prepared with a silica composition of 10, 20, 40, 60, and 80 g, respectively. The crosslinking rate decreased with increasing silica content, with he promoters being adsorbed on the silica surface with in the rubber composite. As a result, the increase in crosslinking time resulted in the destruction of the silica structure. The increase of the bound rubber content due to the destruction of the silica structure inhibited the chain motion of the polymer molecules and reduced the cohesion of the silica itself. Finally, the increase of silica content showed the increase of hardness, tensile strength, and storage modulus of rubber composites.
By sol-gel method, we have fabricated silica-titania hybrid film using silane treated colloidal $TiO_2$ and characterized the film through FT-IR, TGA, UV-VIS and AFM. The silica-titania hybrid film showed Ti-O-Si chemical bond at FT-IR peak of $910{\sim}940cm^{-1}$. The fabricated hybrid film showed thermal stability of around $350^{\circ}C$(5wt% loss temperature) and transparency more than 90%. In addition, the good surface smoothness was confirmed by AFM. Therefore, the silica-titania hybrid film with outstanding properties can be potential for application in electronics and displays.
The epoxy/micro-and nano-mixed silica composites(EMNC) systems were prepared and the AC insulation breakdown strength was evaluated. Glass transition temperature (Tg) and crosslink density were also measured by dynamic mechanical analyzer(DMA) in order to correlate them with the electrical and mechanical properties, and the effect of silane coupling agent on the electrical properties was also studied. Electrical properties and crosslink density of epoxy/micro-silica composite were noticeably improved by addition of nano-silica and silane coupling agent, and the highest breakdown strength was obtained by addition of 0.5~5 phr of nano-silica and 2.5 phr of silane coupling agent, and the highest tensile and flexural strength were obtained by addition of 2.5 phr of nano-silica.
In recent years the interest in organic/inorganic hybrid materials has increased at a fast rate. Nano organic-inorganic hybrid composites have shown advantages for preparing hard coating layers. Especially, nano hybrid composite has low environmental pollution. It has high transparency, hardness, toughness, thermal dissociation temperature, hydrophobicity by using nano sized inorganic material. There are many ways in which these materials may be synthesized, a typical one being the use of silica and silanes using the sol-gel process. The structure of sol-gel silica evolves as a result of these successive hydrolysis and condensation reactions and the subsequent drying and curing. The sol-gel reactions are catalyzed by acids and produce silica sol solutions. The silica sol grows until they reach a size where a gel transition occurs and a solid-like gel is formed. Colloidal silica(CS)/silane sol solutions were synthesized in variation with parameters such as different acidity and reaction time. In order to understand their physical and chemical properties, sol-gel coating films were fabricated on glass. From all sol-gel solutions, seasoning effect of sol-gel coating layer on glass was observed.
The vulcanizate structure of silica-filled compounds is affected by the filler-rubber interaction (FRI) due to the silica-rubber coupling reaction and the chemical crosslink density (CCD) of the matrix rubber. In this study, the vulcanizate structure changes of silica-filled compounds according to the silane and sulfur variation were quantitatively analyzed using the Flory-Rehner and Kraus equations. In efficiency vulcanization (EV) conditions with low sulfur content, FRI increased when the bis-[3-(triethoxysilyl)propyl]tetrasulfide (TESPT) content increased, and the CCD clearly decreased. By contrast, in semi-EV conditions with high sulfur content, as TESPT content increased, the FRI increased the same way EV conditions, but the CCD was unchanged. Based on these results, it was confirmed that FRI of the silica-filled compounds increased as TESPT content increased, but CCD decreased or retained similar values according to the vulcanization system, indicating that the formation reaction of FRI was preferred over CCD.
